Stonewall Gap (also known as Stonewall) is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP) located in and governed by Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The population of the Stonewall Gap CDP was 66 at the United States Census 2020.^[3] The Weston post office (Zip Code 81091) serves the area.^[4]

Geography

Stonewall Gap lies along Colorado State Highway 12 at a gap formed by the Middle Fork of the Purgatoire River through the 8,400 feet (2,600 meters) elevation Stonewall Ridge. Highway 12 leads east down the Purgatoire River valley 33 miles (53 km) to Trinidad, the Las Animas county seat, and north over Cucharas Pass in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains 32 miles (51 km) to La Veta.

The Stonewall Gap CDP has an area of 1,229 acres (4.974 km²), all land.^[1]

History

The Stonewall area was originally part of the 1,714,765 acres (6,939.41 km²) Maxwell Land Grant awarded by the government of New Mexico to two Mexican citizens in 1841. The grant area was later owned by foreign investors who created the Maxwell Land Grant Company and attempted to expel the farmers, ranchers, and miners, both Anglos and Hispanics, who had settled on lands in the grant. The Stonewall incident in 1888 was the most violent of many incidents in the dispute between the Maxwell Company and the settlers on grant lands. The company had sold 5,000 acres (2,000 ha) of grant land in Colorado to a group of investors including Colorado governor, Alva Adams. The investors intended to develop the land for tourism and sought the immediate eviction of the settlers. A large group of settlers, mostly Hispanics, gathered to protest and surrounded a hotel in Stonewall where the company's employees barricaded themselves. A gunfight ensued in which three of the protesters were shot and killed. In the aftermath several of the protesters were arrested and later convicted of inciting a riot.^[5]

The Supreme Court of the United States affirmed the ownership of the grant land by the foreign investors and by 1899 most of the original settlers had either been evicted or had come to terms with the company.^[6]

Demographics

The United States Census Bureau initially defined the Stonewall Gap CDP for the United States Census 2010. The population was 67 in 2010 and 66 in 2020.

The Maxwell Land Grant, also known as the Beaubien-Miranda Land Grant, was a 1,714,765-acre (6,939.41 km²) Mexican land grant in Colfax County, New Mexico, and part of adjoining Las Animas County, Colorado. This 1841 land grant was one of the largest contiguous private landholdings in the history of the United States. The New Mexico communities of Cimarron, Dawson, Elizabethtown, Baldy Town, Maxwell, Miami, Raton, Rayado, Springer, Ute Park and Vermejo Park came to be located within the grant, as well as numerous places that are now ghost towns.

The Purgatoire River is a river in southeastern Colorado, United States. The river originates in the high mountains of the Culebra Range, Various tributaries merge near Weston in Las Animal County. It flows generally east-northeastward 196 miles (315 km) to a confluence with the Arkansas River near Las Animas in Bent County, Colorado. The Purgatoire River drains an area of 3,449 square miles (8,930 km²), most of which is in Colorado but a small percentage of the watershed is in New Mexico. The watershed of the Purgatoire is lightly populated and population has been declining since 1930 as former coal mining and agricultural communities have become ghost towns.

Boggsville is a former settlement in Bent County, Colorado, USA near the Purgatoire River about 3 miles (4.8 km) above the Purgatoire's confluence with the Arkansas River. It was established in 1866. The surviving structures are among the earliest examples of Territorial architecture in Colorado. Boggsville was the last home of frontiersman Kit Carson before his death in 1868 at Fort Lyon. The U.S. Post Office at Las Animas now serves Boggsville postal addresses.

The Colfax County War was a range war that occurred from 1873 to 1888 between settlers and the new owners of the Maxwell Land Grant in Colfax County, in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The war started when the new landowners tried to remove the local settlers from the land they had just bought. The locals refused to leave, as they had settled much of their livelihood in the grant, which resulted in conflict and violence in 1875.
