The Strange Little Birds Tour is the seventh concert tour by American/Scottish alternative rock group Garbage. [1] The tour launched in May 2016 [2] [3] and supports the band's sixth studio set, Strange Little Birds . [4]
A concert tour is a series of concerts by an artist or group of artists in different cities, countries or locations. Often concert tours are named to differentiate different tours by the same artist and to associate a specific tour with a particular album or product. Especially in the popular music world, such tours can become large-scale enterprises that last for several months or even years, are seen by hundreds of thousands or millions of people, and bring in millions of dollars in ticket revenues. A performer who embarks on a concert tour is called a touring artist.
Alternative rock is a style of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1970s and became widely popular in the 1980s. In this instance, the word "alternative" refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream rock music. The term's original meaning was broader, referring to a generation of musicians unified by their collective debt to either the musical style or simply the independent, DIY ethos of punk rock, which in the late 1970s laid the groundwork for alternative music. At times, "alternative" has been used as a catch-all description for music from underground rock artists that receives mainstream recognition, or for any music, whether rock or not, that is seen to be descended from punk rock. Although the genre evolved in the late 1970s and 1980s, music anticipating the sound of the genre can be found as early as the 1960s, with bands such as The Velvet Underground and artists such as Syd Barrett.
Garbage is an American rock band formed in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1993. The band consists of Scottish musician and lead singer Shirley Manson and American musicians Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig. All four members are involved in songwriting and production. Garbage has sold over 17 million albums worldwide.
Garbage's touring line-up is augmented by Eric Avery on bass guitar. Due to illness, Butch Vig was replaced by Matt Walker for European and North American shows at the start of the run and later Eric Gardner. Garbage have been supported by a number of hand-picked opening acts on this tour; including Tiny Little Houses, Olympia, Tash Sultana, The Pearl Harts, Kristin Kontrol and Cigarettes After Sex.
Eric Adam Avery is an American musician. He is best known as the former bass guitarist and co-founding member of alternative rock band Jane's Addiction.
Matt Walker is an American session musician, known for drumming with Filter, The Smashing Pumpkins and Morrissey, as well as being the regular fill-in to Butch Vig from Garbage on three of their tours
Tash Sultana is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, described as a "one-person band". Sultana's 2016 single "Jungle" was voted into third place in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016; Sultana also had three songs voted into the Triple J Hottest 100, 2017.

The tour set list omits less well known songs for festival appearances. Songs introduced during the run include "So Like A Rose" (from Beautiful Garbage ) performed in both London and St. Louis as a tribute to "Blood For Poppies" music video director Matt Irwin. At the beginning of July, debut album track "Supervixen" was added to the set, along with "Shut Your Mouth", while "Subhuman", "Queer", "Milk", "Androgyny" and "Beloved Freak" returned to the set on occasion over the following two months. During September, Strange Little Birds tracks "Night Drive Loneliness" and "Magnetized" were performed in concert, "So We Can Stay Alive" has also been sound-checked.
Beautiful Garbage is the third studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on September 27, 2001, by Almo Sounds and Interscope Records. Marking a departure from the sound the band had established on their first two releases, the album was written and recorded over the course of a year, when lead singer Shirley Manson chronicled their efforts weekly online, becoming one of the first high-profile musicians to keep an Internet blog. The album expanded on the band's musical variety, with stronger melodies, more direct lyrics, and sounds mixing rock with electronica, new wave, hip hop, and girl groups.
London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames in the south-east of England, at the head of its 50-mile (80 km) estuary leading to the North Sea, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. Londinium was founded by the Romans. The City of London, London's ancient core − an area of just 1.12 square miles (2.9 km2) and colloquially known as the Square Mile − retains boundaries that follow closely its medieval limits. The City of Westminster is also an Inner London borough holding city status. Greater London is governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.
St. Louis is a major independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city, forming the fourth-longest river system in the world. The city had an estimated 2018 population of 302,838 and is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area, which is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, and the 20th-largest in the United States.
During this tour, Shirley has been quoting lines from the Beyoncé songs "Sorry" and "Don't Hurt Yourself" alongside lyrics from Marianne Faithfull's "Why D'Ya Do It", Patti Smith Group's "Revenge" and Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Drop Dead/Celebration" on "Vow". In addition to interpolating from "Talk of the Town" by The Pretenders on "Special", Shirley has also quoted lines from their song "Kid" and their cover of "I Go to Sleep".
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is an American singer, songwriter and actress. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Beyoncé performed in various singing and dancing competitions as a child. She rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of Destiny's Child, one of the best-selling girl groups in history. Their hiatus saw the release of her first solo album, Dangerously in Love (2003), which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and earned her five Grammy Awards. The album also featured the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy".
"Sorry" is a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé for her sixth studio album Lemonade (2016). It was written and produced by Wynter Gordon, MeLo-X and Beyoncé, with Hit-Boy serving as a co-producer and Stuart White as an additional producer. Columbia Records serviced it to radio stations as the album's second single on May 3, 2016. "Sorry" is an electro-R&B song with a thumping rhythm created by drum beats, synthesizers and bells. The song's lyrics revolve around the protagonist dealing with betrayal of a partner with another woman referred to as "Becky".
"Don't Hurt Yourself" is a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé for her sixth studio album, Lemonade. The song was produced by Jack White, Beyoncé and Derek Dixie, and written by White, Beyoncé, and Diana Gordon. It contains samples of "When the Levee Breaks" written by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham, and performed by Led Zeppelin. Some critics compared the song to Beyoncé's "Ring the Alarm" (2006). The song received a nomination for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards in the category Best Rock Performance. Billboard ranked "Don't Hurt Yourself" at number 61 on their "Billboard's 100 Best Pop Songs of 2016" list.

Bryan David "Butch" Vig, nicknamed the Nevermind Man, is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer, best known as the drummer and co-producer of the alternative rock band Garbage and the producer of diamond-selling album Nevermind by Nirvana.
Garbage is the debut studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on August 15, 1995, by Almo Sounds. The album was met with critical acclaim upon its release, being viewed by some as an innovative recording for its time. It reached number 20 on the US Billboard 200 and number six on the UK Albums Chart, while charting inside the top 20 and receiving multi-platinum certifications in several territories. The album's success was helped by the band promoting it on a year-long tour, including playing on the European festival circuit and supporting the Smashing Pumpkins throughout 1996, as well as by a run of increasingly successful singles culminating with "Stupid Girl", which received Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1997.
Shirley Ann Manson is a Scottish singer, songwriter and musician. She is the lead singer of the alternative rock band Garbage. For much of her international career, Manson commuted between her home city of Edinburgh and the United States to record with Garbage; she now lives and works in Los Angeles. Manson gained media attention for her forthright style, rebellious attitude, and distinctive voice.
Bleed Like Me is the fourth studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on April 11, 2005, by Geffen Records. For this album, the band chose a straight rock sound reminiscent of their live performances instead of the electronica that permeated their previous album Beautiful Garbage (2001). The first recording sessions took place in March 2003, but were mostly unproductive due to passive aggression between band members and a general lack of direction. As they struggled to record the album, Garbage quietly split for four months starting in October 2003. They reunited under producer John King in Los Angeles and, following a guest appearance by Dave Grohl on "Bad Boyfriend", they found a renewed focus on production. Garbage recruited drummer Matt Walker and bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen for new recording sessions and completed the album by late 2004.
The Version 2.0 World Tour was the second world concert tour cycle by American/Scottish alternative rock group Garbage, which took the band throughout North America, Europe, South Africa, Asia and Australia in support of its second album Version 2.0.
The Beautiful Garbage World Tour was the third world concert tour cycle by American/Scottish alternative rock group Garbage, which took the band throughout North and Central America, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand in support of its third album Beautiful Garbage.
The Bleed Like Me Tour was the fourth world concert tour cycle by American/Scottish alternative rock group Garbage. The tour launched in Paris, France and took the band throughout North America, Europe and Australia in support of the band's fourth studio album Bleed Like Me which was released internationally in April 2005. The tour took in combinations of headline performances, slots on the bills at rock festivals, television and radio shows. After being initially organised low-key, the tour snowballed into bigger venues when the parent album and its lead single "Why Do You Love Me" became surprise hits internationally. The tour concluded in Perth, Western Australia after six months on the road; when the tour leg of dates in France, Belgium and United Kingdom were cancelled. A press statement from the band stated that they had "somewhat overextended themselves".
The Garbage tour was the first world concert tour cycle completed by American/Scottish alternative rock group Garbage, which took the band throughout North America, Europe, Japan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand in support of its self-titled debut album Garbage. For the duration of the tour, Garbage's touring line-up was augmented by Daniel Shulman, who had previously been a session musician for Run-D.M.C., on bass guitar. Samplers and MIDI controllers helped the bandmembers to unleash on stage the varied sounds that augmented the studio versions of the songs. Despite all the members of the group having racked up years of touring experience between them prior to forming, Garbage had no initial plans to tour their debut set; they changed their mind when they found that they enjoyed themselves while filming the music video for their debut single, "Vow". Director Samuel Bayer had encouraged the group to play the song live as he filmed them, rather than playing along to a backing track.
Not Your Kind of People is the fifth studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on May 11, 2012, through the band's own record label, Stunvolume. The album marks the return of the band after a seven-year hiatus that started with previous album Bleed Like Me. Guitarist Duke Erikson said at the launch of the record that "working with Garbage again was very instinctual. Like getting on a bicycle...with three other people." The band emphasized that they did not want to reinvent themselves, but embrace their sonic identity, reflecting their classic sound whilst updating it for 2012. Although Shirley Manson's morose dispositions have a presence on the record, many of the songs share a more optimistic outlook on life, influenced by some of Manson's personal experiences during their hiatus.
"Battle in Me" is a song from alternative rock band Garbage's fifth studio album Not Your Kind of People, and was released as the lead single to promote the album in United Kingdom. "Battle in Me" preceded the band's underplayed headliner concert in London and served as the band's Record Store Day 2012 release in the United Kingdom and Europe.
The Not Your Kind of People Tour is the fifth world concert tour cycle by American/Scottish alternative rock group Garbage. The tour launched May 2012 in Los Angeles, United States and included headline performances and festival appearances throughout North America, Europe and Asia. The tour also routed South America and several festivals in Australia during 2013.
One Mile High... Live is the 2013 live Blu-ray and DVD released by alternative rock group Garbage through Eagle Rock Entertainment. The recording took place in October 2012, at the Ogden Theatre in Denver, Colorado and was initially broadcast live on AXS TV. The show took place approximately mid-way through the bands year-long world tour in support of their fifth album, Not Your Kind of People and features the entire group present, with bass provided by Eric Avery.
20 Years Queer is a concert tour by American-Scottish alternative rock group Garbage, to mark the twentieth anniversary of their debut album Garbage. The title also references the band's early single "Queer", and the promotional poster is redolent of the self-titled album's pink feather artwork. The tour was preceded by a special 20-year edition of the record, which was re-mastered and featured remixes and previously unreleased versions of album tracks. Garbage performed the album in its entirety as well as all the B-sides recorded during that period.
The Never Ending Tour is the popular name for Bob Dylan's endless touring schedule since June 7, 1988.
Strange Little Birds is the sixth studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on June 10, 2016, through the band's own record label, Stunvolume. It is their second independent album release, and follows 2012's Not Your Kind of People. The album's press release describes Strange Little Birds as "a sweeping, cinematic record of a unified mood: darkness".
The Rage and Rapture Tour is a co-headling concert tour by American new wave group Blondie and American alternative rock group Garbage. It was launched in support of Blondie's eleventh studio album, Pollinator (2017), and Garbage's sixth studio album, Strange Little Birds (2016). The tour kicked off on July 5, 2017, in Saratoga, California. Support on the tour was provided by Sky Ferreira in Los Angeles, while John Doe and Exene Cervenka will open the first half of the tour, and Deap Vally will open the second leg.
This Is the Noise That Keeps Me Awake is a 2017 autobiography by American alternative rock band Garbage with journalist and former Rolling Stone contributor Jason Cohen over a two-year period which coincided with the band's twentieth anniversary. The title comes from the lyric of their 1998 single "Push It".

The tour was preceded in June by a special 20-year anniversary edition of Version 2.0, which was re-mastered in late 2017. Garbage will perform the album in its entirety as well as all the B-sides recorded and released during the album's promotional cycle spanning the years 1998–2000.
