The Kinabatangan River is a river in Sandakan Division, in northeastern Sabah, Malaysia. It is the second longest river in Malaysia, with a length of 560 km (350 mi) from its headwaters in the mountains of southwest Sabah to its outlet at the Sulu Sea, east of Sandakan. The area is known for its high biodiversity, including its limestone caves at Gomantong Hill, dryland dipterocarp forests, riverine forest, freshwater swamp forest, oxbow lakes, and salty mangrove swamps near the coast.
Tawau Hills Park, was established in 1979, primarily as a protection for the water catchment area of Tawau town, Sabah, Malaysia. It is located 24 kilometres from Tawau, and comprises 279.72 km² of lowland dipterocarp rainforest, surrounded by oil palm and cacao plantations. The park offers picnic areas, camping sites, and chalets. The Park contains rugged volcanic landscapes including a hot spring and spectacular waterfalls. The highest point in the park is Gunung Magdalena. It is administered by the Sabah Parks.
Tawau Airport is an airport located 15 nautical miles north east of Tawau, Sabah, Malaysia. It is one of two airports in Sabah with immigration counters for international flights, the other being Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Tawau Airport serves the districts of Tawau, Kunak and Semporna and is the nearest airport to the diving islands of Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai, all of which are located in the latter district.
The Gabai River, a minor river in the Langat River basin, flows from the 1,462-metre-high (4,797 ft) Big Ghost Mountain in the state of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia into the Dipterocarp forest reserve of the Hulu Langat district in the adjacent state of Selangor.
Maliau Basin or also Maliau Basin Conservation Area, is a region in Tongod District of Sabah, Malaysia, which represents a geological catchment surrounding the Maliau River. Located around the centre of Sabah in the Sandakan Division, it was designated as a conservation area by the Sabah Foundation in 1981. Later in 1997 the Sabah State Assembly gazetted the Basin as a Protection Forest Reserve with a total area of 588 square kilometres. The region also features Mount Lotung, Maliau Falls, and Lake Linumunsut. Efforts are underway to nominate the area as a World Heritage Site. In 2011, the Maliau Basin Studies Centre opened, a large field centre to serve as a basis for studies and teaching carried out in Maliau by naturalists, biologists, and groups of field course students.
Feihyla kajau, also known as the Dring's flying frog, white-eared tree frog, and white-eared jelly-nest frog, is a species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. It is endemic to Borneo and found in all major jurisdictions of the island Kalimantan (Indonesia), Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysia), and Brunei. The specific name kajau is Berawan for "charming".
Shorea faguetiana is a species of plant in the family Dipterocarpaceae. Along with other species in the genus Shorea, it is also known as the Yellow Meranti. It is native to Borneo, the Malay Peninsula, and Thailand. It is the tallest flowering plant, and second tallest living tree, only after the sequoia, with the largest specimen measuring 100.7 m (330 ft) in height.
Bidu Bidu Forest Reserve is in the Beluran district in Sandakan Division, Sabah, Malaysia. It was designated as a class I protection forest by the Sabah Forestry Department in 1984. The forest reserve is hilly with very steep slopes. Mt. Bangau Bangau is the highest peak in the reserve. The Bakong Bakong Waterfall, situated near the northern boundary of the reserve, is a local attraction. The forest reserve is a very important area for the conservation of ultramafic forest in Sabah and harbours many interesting plants, including the Sabah endemic Borneodendron aenigmaticum.
Spencer Gorge/Webster's Falls Conservation Area is located on the Niagara Escarpment in Dundas, Ontario, a constituent community of Hamilton, Ontario, and is owned and operated by the Hamilton Conservation Authority. It has views over Hamilton and a two major waterfalls that are accessible via a system of trails. The natural features found in the area are considered to be provincially significant. A shuttle service runs from Christie Lake Conservation Area to Spencer Gorge/Webster Falls Conservation Area, for visitors to access this conservation area on weekends and holidays.
Mahua Waterfall is a plunge type waterfall located in Patau Village, Tambunan District of Sabah, Malaysia within the Crocker Range National Park administered by Sabah Parks under the state Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment. The waterfall has a height of 17 metres (56 ft) with 1.2 metres deep which became one of the ecotourism attractions for the district as well for Sabah.
Maliau Falls is best known for its seven tiers falls. It is the largest of all the waterfalls known in the Maliau Basin Conservation Area in Tongod District, Sabah, Malaysia. Takob Akob waterfall and Giluk waterfall are located in the same area.
The Sabah Museum is the state museum of Sabah, Malaysia. It is sited on 17 hectares of land at Bukit Istana Lama in Kota Kinabalu, the state capital.
Gunung Rara Forest Reserve is a rainforest area in Tawau Division, Sabah, Malaysia. Borneo elephants probably were killed in a concession area of Yayasan Sabah in the reserve. The concession was originally intended to be managed into perpetuity for the benefit of all Sabahans but was instead largely decimated by overharvesting. The reserve sits between Danum Valley and Maliau Basin Conservation areas. There are palm oil plantations in the reserve. The rainforests in Sabah are endangered by palm oil plantations.
Ptyas fusca, commonly known as the white-bellied rat snake or brown rat snake, is a species of colubrid snake. It is found in Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.
Dicuspiditermes nemorosus, is a species of small termite of the genus Dicuspiditermes. It is found in Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia and Borneo. The species is known to build three different types of mounding nests, where two termitaria have single protruding nest structure and third nest type is typified by several protruding nest all connected at the base.
Rhacophorus borneensis is a species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. This recently (2013) described species is endemic to Malaysian Borneo where it is known from its type locality in the Maliau Basin Conservation Area, Sandakan Division, Sabah as well as from the Batang Ai National Park, Sarawak. Prior to its description, it was included in Rhacophorus reinwardtii. It is said to be "one of the prettiest frogs of Borneo". Common name Borneo flying frog has been coined for it.
Mount Maria is a volcanic cone mountain located at the Tawau Division of Sabah, Malaysia. It reaches a height of approximately 1,067 metres (3,501 ft).
The Padas River is a river in Interior Division, southwestern Sabah of Malaysia. It has a total length of 120 km (75 mi) from its headwaters in the mountains of northwest Sabah to its outlet at the South China Sea, southwest of Beaufort town. Its source is originated from the Long Pasia in Sipitang and go through in the mountains in the interior Beaufort, Keningau and Tenom Districts, which part of the Crocker Range system. Padas river is from Long Pasia.
Kalabakan is a district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, located approximately 235 kilometres (146 mi) southeast of the state capital of Kota Kinabalu. It recorded a population of 48,195 people in the 2020 Malaysian census. Its capital is the town of Kalabakan.
