Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet (TNGIM) is a business summit organized by Government of Tamil Nadu to facilitate domestic and foreign investments in the state. The first of these summits took place in 2015 and later in 2019. The next meet is scheduled to take place in January 2024.

2015

The first meet was organized by the then chief minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa at the Chennai Trade Centre in Chennai. The government signed more than 100 MoUs with various investors to raise ₹2.4 lakh crores of investment. [1]

2019

The second meet was organized by then chief minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K. Palaniswami and was held on 23 and 24 January 2019 at the same location as the previous meet. [2] The Government of Tamil Nadu facilitated the signing of 304 MoUs for a total investment of ₹3 lakh crores (US$42 billion). [3] [4] Adani Group and Indian Oil Corporation committed to investing ₹28,000 crores (US$3.9 billion), the majority of which was to develop the Kattupalli shipyard. [5] Japan announced that All Nippon Airways would start daily flights between Narita and Chennai to facilitate economic development. [6]

2024

On 10 August 2023, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin unveiled the new logo and announced the dates for the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024, which is set to take place on 7 and 8 January 2024. [7] The focus sectors for investments include automobile, electronics, Information technology, electric vehicles, aerospace, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, textiles, chemicals, food processing, heavy engineering, leather and fintech. [8]

The Investors meet attracted ₹6.64 lakh crore investment which was double the investment than the 2019 meet. [9] The largest Investors were Tata Power ( ₹70,800 crore), Adani group (₹42,768 crore), Singapore’s Sembcorp (₹36,238 crore), Leap Green ( ₹22,000 crore) and CPCL Ltd (₹17,000 crore). [9] The Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL) also signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu state government to build a manufacturing facility near Chennai. About 50% of the employees will be women, along with 5% of employees from LGBTQ community and people with disability (PWD). [10]

Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin is an Indian politician serving as the 8th and current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu since 2021. The son of the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Stalin has been the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party since 28 August 2018. He served as the 45th Mayor of Chennai from 1996 to 2002 and the 1st Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 2009 to 2011. Stalin was placed 24th on the list of India's Most Powerful Personalities in 2022 by The Indian Express.

Ottakarathevar Panneerselvam, popularly known as OPS is an Indian Politician who was the 6th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu briefly in December 2016 and previously from 2001 to 2002 and again from 2014 to 2015. As finance minister, he has presented the Tamil Nadu state budget 11 times.

Edappadi Karuppa Palaniswami, often referred to by his initials E.P.S., is an Indian politician who is the current leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He served as the seventh chief minister of Tamil Nadu, from 2017 to 2021. He has been the General Secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) since 28 March 2023. Previously, Palaniswami has served as the interim general secretary (2022–23), joint co-ordinator (2017–22) and headquarters secretary (2016–22) of AIADMK.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram is India's first deep water container transshipment port, currently under-construction in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It is a multi-purpose,all-weather, green port located 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) away from the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.This is the first automated port in India and the only port in the country to be located adjacent to an international shipping route.The Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram is the second port in the world that is in close proximity to an international shipping route. The port is just 10 nautical miles (19 km) away from the busiest east–west shipping channel connecting Europe, Persian Gulf,South East Asia and the Far East. This is the sole port in India with a natural depth of 20 meters, achieved without dredging,making it the deepest port in India and Asia.Being a greenfield seaport, it provides flexibility in design and future expansion.The port is a gateway to Indian Ocean.The seaport will be connected by India's third-longest railway tunnel, presently under planning phase.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Software industry in Chennai</span> Third largest software exporter in India

Chennai is the third largest software exporter in India, next only to Bangalore and Hyderabad. India's largest IT park is housed at Chennai. Software exports from Tamil Nadu during 2017–2018 rose 8.8% per cent to touch 1,11,179 crore, involving a workforce of 780,000, and the city is the hub for deep tech startup companies. Many software and software services companies have development centres in Chennai, which contributed 14 percent of India's total software exports of 14,42,140 lakh during 2006–07, making it the third largest Indian city software exporter following Bangalore, Hyderabad and the city is the home for 7 top rated IT companies out of 15 in India. The Tidel Park in Chennai was billed as Asia's largest IT park when it was built. Major software companies have their offices set up here, with some of them making Chennai their largest base. Chennai is the largest hub for e-publishing, as there are 67 e-publishing units registered with the STPI and many Rs.8300-Cr data centers, digital hubs are in the process of development. A major reason for the growth of the Software industry are the top engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, of which Chennai is a major contributor, have been a major recruiting hub for the IT firms. According to estimates, these engineering colleges and universities consistently generate about 50 per cent of the human resource requirements for the IT and ITES industry was being sourced from the state, particularly from Chennai. The total employment in the Tamil Nadu’s technology sector crossed the one million mark in the quarter ended June 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Palaniswami ministry</span>

The First Ministry of Palaniswami was the Council of Ministers, headed by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, that was formed after the fifteenth legislative assembly election, which was held on 16th of May 2016. The results of the election were announced on 19 May 2016, and this led to the formation of the 15th Assembly. On 16 February 2017, the Council took office.

The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is a men's Twenty20 (T20) cricket league that is annually held in the state of Tamil Nadu in India and contested by eight city-based franchise teams. The league was formed in 2016 by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). It is usually played during post summer season from June to August of every year. Shriram Group is the current title sponsor of the tournament.

The Sixteenth Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election was held on 6 April 2021, to elect representatives from the 234 constituencies in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won the election, ending the decade-long reign of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The DMK's leader M. K. Stalin became the eighth Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and the 12th Chief Minister since the 1956 reorganization. He replaced Edappadi K. Palaniswami of the AIADMK.

Tirupattur district, or Tirupathur district, is one of the 38 districts in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Nivar</span> North Indian Ocean cyclone in 2020

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Nivar was a tropical cyclone which brought severe impacts to portions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in late November 2020. The eighth depression and fourth named storm of the 2020 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, Nivar originated from a disturbance in the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The disturbance gradually organized and on 23 November, both the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a tropical depression had formed. On the next day, both agencies upgraded the system to a tropical storm, with the latter assigning it the name Nivar. Nivar made its landfall over north coastal Tamil Nadu between Puducherry and Chennai close to Marakkanam. Overall, Nivar caused $600 million in damages.

Guidance Tamil Nadu is the investment promotion agency of the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is constituted to reach out to prospective investors and make them invest in the state of Tamil Nadu. It comes under the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department and is under the purview of Minister Dr. T. R. B. Rajaa. Since inception, Guidance has facilitated investments for over Rupees Five lakh crore across various sectors. Guidance has evolved into an organisation that strives to transform the ecosystem in Tamil Nadu for investors to invest, innovate and create.

Sai University is a private university located on SH-49A near Paiyanur, Thirupporur block, Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu, India. Established in 2018, It is one of the first private universities to be legislated in by the Tamil Nadu government for over 90 years, since the establishment of Annamalai University.
