The Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) is a parastatal organization affiliated with the government of Tanzania. It was created by an Act of the National Assembly of Tanzania in 1986 as a successor to the Tanzania National Scientific Research Council. The commission was a subsidiary institution to the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology (MCST) and is now a subsidiary institution to the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology. [1] [2] The main offices are located in Dar es Salaam.

COSTECH is currently led by Dr. Amos Nungu, who formerly served as Assistant Director of Science, Technology and Innovation at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology]. [3]

Function

The function of COSTECH is that of "co-ordinating and promoting research and technology development activities in the country." [4] COSTECH is the "chief advisor to the Government on all matters pertaining to science and technology and their application to the socio-economic development of the country." [5] Government-funded science activity in the country is governed by the commission, and its duties include the administration of research grants, maintenance of research registry and science information services, setting research policy, and creating incentives for invention and innovation.[ citation needed ] Areas of activity include the Internet, biotechnology, energy, telecommunications, the development of multimedia teaching material, and more.[ citation needed ]

COSTECH works with corporations, universities, and other parastatals, including the Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization and the Tanzania Traditional Energy Development and Environment Organization.[ citation needed ]

Kivukoni is an administrative ward of the Ilala Municipical Council of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. Kivikoni's name come from the Swahili word meaning "a crossing place". The ward is bordered by Upanga East ward to the west, Kisutu ward to the southwest, and Kigamboni ward across the Kivukoni channel. The ward covers an area of 2.387 km2 (0.922 sq mi). Kivukoni ward is one of the most important wards in the country, as it is home to the Ikulu, which is the home of the president of Tanzania. Kivukoni ward is also home to the National Museum of Tanzania. According to the 2012 census, the ward had a total population of 6,742.

Since May 2021, he has been serving as the Regional Managing Director of Coventry University African Hub, based in Kigali, Rwanda. Lwakabamba holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Leeds in England since 1975. Since 1997, he served as the founding Rector of Rwanda’s Kigali Institute of Science and Technology. In 2006, he was appointed Rector of National University of Rwanda until 2013. Lwakabamba served as Rwanda's Minister of Infrastructure between February 2013 and July 2014, he also served as Rwanda's Minister of Education since July 2014 until June 2015.

The Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) is a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. DUCE is located in Miburani ward, Temeke municipality close to Tanzania National Stadium. It is one of the higher learning institutions in Tanzania established in 2005 as part of the Tanzanian Government development policy to extend secondary school education in Tanzania. The core activities of the college is teaching, conducting research and offering public consultation.

A Challenge Fund is a competitive financing facility to disburse donor funding for international development projects, typically utilizing public sector or private foundation funds for market-based or incentive driven solutions. As Irwin and Porteous (2005) observed, "In practice, the objective of a challenge fund is to provide the smallest possible financial contribution to a socially worthwhile project consistent with making it less risky and more financially sustainable to the private promoter." Applicant qualifications differ widely among challenge funds, but typically focus on non-state actors.

The Human Development Innovation Fund is a UKAid financed 40 million British Pound challenge fund providing grants to businesses, NGOs and research institutions for scaling innovations focused on the quality, value for money, and sustainability of basic services in education, health and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). HDIF was launched on May 12, 2014 with the support of the Vice President of Tanzania.
