Tattoos, also titled Tattoos on My Heart,is the third studio album by American singer Jason Derulo which features guest appearances from 2 Chainz,DJ Frank E,Jordin Sparks,Pitbull, and The Game. The album was released on September 20,2013,through Beluga Heights Records and Warner Bros. Records internationally. The U.S. version of the album is a 5-track extended play, later reissued as Talk Dirty in 2014. Incorporating a base core of R&B,pop and electronic dance music with some adult contemporary and soul music,Derulo wanted the album to be "totally different" from his previous albums and show the growth in his writing and his overall performance. Derulo co-wrote every song on the album. Its production was handled by RedOne,Ricky Reed,DJ Frank E,Jonas Jeberg and Martin Johnson,as well as others.
The album was preceded by the lead single "The Other Side",which peaked at number two in the UK. A second single,"Talk Dirty",featuring American rapper 2 Chainz, was released on August 2,2013,topped the charts in 14 countries. Follow-up singles "Marry Me" was released a month before the album and reached the top-ten in Australia and top-twenty in New Zealand, whilst "Trumpets" was released in November 2013,peaking at number one in Australia. Derulo supported the album with The Tattoos World Tour . Upon its release, the album received generally mixed reviews from music critics, that were ambivalent towards its production and lyrical content. Tattoos debuted at number five on the Australian Albums Chart and the UK Albums Chart, where it became his highest-charting album in that country.
In January 2012,during rehearsals for his then upcoming "Future History World Tour",Derulo was practicing a stunt when he fell and broke his C2 vertebrae –leaving him in a neck brace for six months and forcing him to cancel his first headlining tour. [4] "I was not able to dance,I couldn't even really bop my head. It's the simple things that you take for granted —not being able to perform for that amount of time, and also knowing that it could be gone in an instant." said Jason during an interview. [5] "I wouldn't change the accident for anything because I've grown so much from it," Jason admits. [4] Derulo then decided to channel all of this creative energy into studio time,on writing and recording his third album. He had written over 300 songs, recorded between 100 and 120 of those songs for the album and had to narrow them down to 12. [6] A very difficult process for him as he states "I wanted to be sure that the album was a roller coaster ride, that every single song was totally different from the last... I wanted to be sure this album was far different from that one,to make sure that the growth was present. I'm 23 now. I really wanted this album to be a direct representation of who I am. I didn't want to hide anything. This album,I wanted to tell a story. [6]
In the United States,Tattoos was only released as a 5-track extended play (EP);a full-length U.S.-exclusive version of the album titled Talk Dirty was released on April 15,2014. [7] The new songs on the album include new collaboration with rappers Kid Ink,Snoop Dogg and Tyga while the album's production was handled by Timbaland,The Cataracs,Ammo,Jon Bellion,DJ Mustard,Martin Johnson,RedOne,and Ricky Reed. The album includes all of the singles released from the international album including "Marry Me","Talk Dirty" featuring 2 Chainz,"Stupid Love","Trumpets" and "The Other Side" as well as the duet with his girlfriend Jordin Sparks on "Vertigo" and four additional newly recorded songs. [8]
On July 23,2013,Derulo announced the title of third studio album would be Tattoos. The title of the album was inspired by the months of rehabilitation during the recording process after he injured his neck while preparing for his tour. [9] [10] In an interview with Access Hollywood Live ,when speaking of the album's title Derulo said:
"Life altering experiences are like tattoos stuck to you for life... Some are more painful than others, some may be ugly, so we wish we could undo them. Some may be so beautiful that we want to share them with the world. But, they're all part of the art that makes you who you are." [11]
On August 8, 2013, just over a month away from its US release, after his performance on America's Got Talent, Derulo revealed the album's official artwork. [12] The artwork is an illustration of Jason which shows a profile of his face, with designs shaved into his hair and the album's title written in ink on the side of his neck against a yellow shaded background. [10] The Japanese edition is titled Tattoos on My Heart. [13] The U.S. edition of the album will be titled Talk Dirty after the single of the same name and will include a brand new track list only for the United States. [14]
The front cover was illustrated by Kadir Nelson.
The album's official date was revealed on July 22, 2013. following the release of "The Other Side" Jason went on a promo tour to promote the single including guest appearances on Chelsea Lately and Good Morning America . On May 7, 2013, Jason performed the song live on the sixteenth season of Dancing with the Stars . [15] He also performed the song live on the 8th season of America's Got Talent on August 7, 2013. [16] He also sang the song with cover singer Tyler Ward and in a trio with Keke Palmer and Max Schneider. They later posted the videos on YouTube. Derulo performed "Talk Dirty" for the first time at the House of Blues in Orlando in conjunction with 102 JAMZ's Presents Hook Up #4. where he also performed an acoustic cover of "The Other Side". he also performed the track at the iHeart Radio Live Coca-Cola Summer Concert Series in July 2013. [17] Derulo is heading to Australia on a promotional tour, during which he will perform on the Sunrise morning show and perform on The X Factor Australia among other yet to be confirmed performances. [18] While the full-length album will be released to international territories in 2013, Derulo said, "I know the fans they wanted something here (In the US) and I wanted to give the fans at least something other than just the single. So I'm doing the EP and then the album will come out shortly after that." [19] The album contains an 11 track standard edition as well as a 14 track deluxe edition including 3 bonus tracks. [20] The album's official standard edition track listing was released on August 26, 2013, along with the release of the album's third single "Marry Me". [21]

Upon release, Tattoos has received generally mixed reviews. According to Metacritic, where they assign a weighted average score out of 100 to ratings and reviews from selected mainstream critics, the album received an average of 49, based on 4 reviews. [48] AllMusic's Andy Kellman said that Tattoos wasn't necessarily more serious than his two preceding albums Jason Derulo (2009) and Future History (2011), however said that it is "a little heavier on songs regarding monogamy." He described the album as hardly "one a step forward", as most of the album's content covers a variety of songs about "devotion and settling down" there is still plenty of space for "content about short-term relationships." [49] Marian Tuin from the Examiner, called the album "a therapeutic expression through songwriting." Digital Spy's, Robert Copsey summarised that Tattoos "may not be particularly bold or daring, but it's packed with enough hooks, singalong choruses and dancefloor-grabbing moments to make it a thoroughly enjoyable listen", rating the album 3 stars out of 5. [50] Caroline Sullivan from The Guardian , Also rating it 3 stars out of a possible 5, praised the album as a whole for its "clubby hooks." Sullivan went on to say that Derulo, as with his previous 2 albums, hasn't quite "figured out what to do about his innate romanticism", calling the album "a battle between the lover in him and the priapic Lothario." [52]
John Calvert of the UK magazine Fact gave the album its worst review, giving it a 1 out of a possible 5 star rating. Calvert called Tattoos a "disjointed hotchpotch of incompatible tones, styles and sentiment – a product of today's collectivised producer system whereby long-players are constructed like playlists. A gallery of trending white noise pop tropes blur into one, merging then with the equally anonymous presence that is the nondescript Derulo." [51] In writing for PopMatters, Brent Faulkner had a more positive to mixed review of the album, rating the album a 6 out of 10, summarizing that the Tattoos "is a pleasant album with some bright moments as well as some average ones. One of the pitfalls of modern pop is consistently sounding distinct and fresh, something that Derülo is a victim of. Essentially, Derülo hits enough jump shots to win the game, but he could’ve played better down the stretch." [53]
Reviewing the EP released in the United States, Dimas Sanfiorenzo had a positive review, stating the songs are "pretty enjoyable" but that it's "nothing groundbreaking". [54]
On October 5, 2013, Tattoos opened on the UK official Albums Chart at number five, besting previous album Future History (2011) by two chart positions. [55] However, on the UK R&B Albums Chart, Tattoos failed to match Future History's peak position of number one, only managing to debut at number two. [56] As a result, it became Derulo's second highest charting album in the UK to date. [57] In Australia, Tattoos debuted on the ARIA top 40 albums chart at number five; it became Derulo's third top-ten album, and second top five. [58]
Tattoos also debuted in the top twenty in several other countries, including New Zealand, where it debuted at number ten; [59] Norway, where it debuted at number seven; [60] Ireland, where it debuted at number fourteen; [61] and Switzerland, where it debuted at number thirteen. [62] It also debuted outside the top ten on German albums chart at number 25. [63]

Talk Dirty is the reissue of American singer Jason Derulo's third studio album, Tattoos (2013). The collection was released solely in the United States, after Tattoos was only released as a 5-track EP in the country. Released seven months after the original, the full-length album features seven songs from the international album as well as four newly recorded songs and was released by Warner Bros. Records on April 15,2014. For the new material,Derulo worked with past collaborator Ricky Reed,as well as Jim Beanz,Timbaland,Sam Sumser,Chloe Angelides,Cirkut and DJ Mustard. New songs incorporate the same elements of hip hop,pop and R&B and styles previously seen in the original album. Talk Dirty features new collaborations with rappers Kid Ink,Snoop Dogg and Tyga.
A new single "Wiggle" featuring American rapper Snoop Dogg was released as the fourth from the re-issue. The single's accompanying music video was shot on April 14,2014 with director Colin Tilley. Talk Dirty has been promoted during the Tattoos World Tour,as well as live performances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show , Dancing With the Stars and the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. A Target-exclusive edition of the album featuring 2 bonus tracks from Tattoos, was released simultaneously alongside the eleven-track standard edition, while internationally, all of the newly recorded material was included on the Special edition of Tattoos.
Upon its release,Talk Dirty received generally mixed reviews from music critics, with many criticizing the overtly sexual themes and lyrics throughout the album, while others praised his vocal growth in some songs. Talk Dirty officially debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 albums chart with 44,000 copies sold in its first week,10,000 more than predicted, becoming Derulo's first top-five album and highest-charting album in the US to date, beating his debut studio album Jason Derulo by 1,000 copies. [19]
In September 2013,Derulo released his third studio album Tattoos . [119] While recording the record in 2012 and 2013,he collaborated with producers including Ricky Reed and The Cataracs. [120] Following its release,Tattoos became a commercial success;it debuted in the top five on the UK Albums Chart, [121] and the Australian ARIA top 40 albums chart. [122] and charted in the top twenty in several international territories. [123] The project was met with generally mixed reviews from music critics, receiving an average score of 49,based on 4 reviews on Metacritic, indicating "generally mixed or average reviews". [48] Its singles "The Other Side","Talk Dirty","Marry Me" and "Trumpets" each had reached the top ten on the Australian ARIA top 40 singles chart and have each been certified multi-platinum in that country. [124]
The new songs on the album include new collaboration with rappers Kid Ink,Snoop Dogg and Tyga while the album's production was handled by Timbaland,The Cataracs,Ammo,Jon Bellion,DJ Mustard,Martin Johnson,RedOne,and Wallpaper. The album will be preceded by the release of the lead single "Wiggle" featuring American hip hop recording artist Snoop Dogg. [10] Derulo released the album's official track list on March 22,2014. [125] When speaking on the reworked US version of the album,Derulo states:
"A lot of the album is fun,a lot of it is upbeat,feel-good music, but there is an emotional portion to the album too;it morphs in a lot of different ways," he explained. "You heard the first portion of the album on songs like 'The Other Side' and 'Marry Me,' but then it switches to the other side with 'Talk Dirty.' It represents everything I've got, everything I was feeling in the moment. I love going into the studio and just letting it rip." [10] [126]
Derulo commented on On Air with Ryan Seacrest that "This album has a lot of dimensions,'The Other Side' and 'Marry Me' was one side. But when I was making this album,I wasn't thinking about making hit songs... it was just about getting myself out of the darkness. It came from an honest place,I feel like it's me" [127] Much of the new material incorporates hip hop and R&B styles unlike previously seen in Derulo's earlier albums. Four new songs were recorded for Talk Dirty:"Wiggle" (with Snoop Dogg),"Zipper","Bubblegum" (with Tyga) and "Kama Sutra" (with Kid Ink). The newly recorded material for the reissue follow the "provocative nature and upbeat sound of the aforementioned" title track Talk Dirty. [128] "Wiggle" is an "upbeat club-ready" hip-hop infused R&B song that's all about a woman's "big fat butt". [129] Compared to the "matching the slinky nature" of the album's title track, the song features guest vocals from Snoop Dogg. [130] Ricky Reed aka Wallpaper. produced "Wiggle",while also handling the song's music and programming with assistance from Axident,Joe London and John Ryan. The song was recorded by Alex Granelli at Serenity West Recording in Los Angeles,Tha Compound in Los Angeles and at Start From Infinity "Joshua Tree Sessions". It was mixed by Manny Marroquin with additional engineering provided by Ricky Reed,Axident,John Ryan,Joe Spargur and Alex Granelli. It was mastered by Chris Gehringer at Sterling Sound in New York City. [131] Speaking to NewNowNext,Derulo described it as "a song that you can't help but move to. If the person next to you is not moving, don't trust that person—that is not a good person". [132]
"Bubblegum" is an uptempo R&B song [133] that features guest vocals from Tyga is an "ode to the ghetto booties". [134] Once again reminiscent of Talk Dirty, the "contagious and energetic" song sees the inclusion of "sexed-up" lyrical content. [135] [136] [137] It was written by Derulo,Michael Stevenson,Tim Mosley and James Washington, while the song's production was handled by Jim Beanz and Timbaland. The song was recorded and mixed by Demacio “Demo”Castellon &Mike Turco at The Hit Factory Criteria in Miami, while Tyga's vocals were recorded and mixed by Jess Jackson at Ameraycan Studios. Additional engineering was provided by Vadim Chislov and Perry Jimenez. [131] "Kama Sutra" is a mid tempo R&B song that features Kid Ink. It was written by Derulo,Brian Todd Collins,Yung Berg,Breyan Issac and DJ Mustard who also produced the song. The song was recorded by James Royo at Encore Recording Studios in Burbank with additional recording by Alex Granelli at Serenity Studios in Hollywood. It was mixed by James Royo with assistance from Victor Luevanos. [131] "Zipper" is a mid tempo R&B song and is the only new song that does not contain a featuring vocalist. It was written by Derulo,Henry Walter,Sam Sumser,Chloe Angelides,Lukasz Gottwald and Kasher. The song was produced by Cirkut,Sam Sumser and Chloe Angelides and recorded at Luke's in the Boo in Malibu,Red Jacket Studios in Fairfax and Jazzanova Recording Studio in Berlin. It was mixed by Serban Ghenea at Mixstar Studios in Virginia Beach,Virginia. Additional engineering was provided by Axel Reinemer,Clint Gibbs and Sean Small with assistance from Rachael Findlen. [131]
Derulo was originally set to release the full length album of Tattoos both in the United States and Internationally on September 24,2013,however after a last-minute shift in strategy between Derulo and his label. "Tattoos" was released as a five track EP including the first three singles plus two extra songs, with the full length album to follow shortly after the release of a third US single. [138] Derulo had confirmed that he was working on new material to be released specifically for the U.S. version of the album. [139] Explaining the last-minute shift in strategy,Derulo said,"I know the fans they wanted something here and I wanted to give the fans at least something other than just the single. So I'm doing the EP and then the album will come out shortly after that." [138] After topping the charts in over five international territories "Talk Dirty" was officially released in the United States on January 7,2014 as the third single from the Tattoos EP. [140] Derulo officially announced the reissue of Tattoos, retitled Talk Dirty,in February 2014. [141] He added that the album would include all of the singles released from the international album including "Marry Me","Talk Dirty","Stupid Love","Trumpets" and The Other Side as well as the duet with his ex-girlfriend Jordin Sparks on "Vertigo" and four additional newly recorded songs. [142]
On March 17,2014,just under a month away from its US release,Derulo revealed the US version of the album cover. [143] The shoot took place with fashion photographer James Dimmock on February 7,2014. Upon its release,Talk Dirty received generally mixed reviews from music critics. At USA Today ,Martin Caballero rated the album two out of four stars, stating that Derulo is "wallow[ing] in familiar sexed-up tropes, both lyrically and musically, that aren't distinctive enough to ultimately prove memorable." Caballero continued saying "Talk Dirty sounds like Macklemore's Thrift Shop on Red Bull and Viagra". [118] Brent Faulkner of StarPulse.com rated the album three out of five stars, stating that the album heavily relies on sex and swagger holds the album back at times. Faulkner went on to summarize the album as "average at best" stating "[Talk Dirty] seems to put its eggs too much into one basket –specifically booty. Much like Derülo's Future History,Talk Dirty seems to lack cohesion;it's missing something". [177] Glenn Gamboa at Newsday graded the album a C,saying that Derulo "tries too hard at the wrong things... cornering the market on sex-themed pop songs." in closing Gambo called Talk Dirty a "sex-obsessed album that isn't very sexy". [174]
On the other hand,Robert Christgau was more enthusiastic in his column for Billboard ,impressed by Derulo's "command of contemporary hookcraft",even though the songs were about sex gratifying enough to prompt marriage:"I value both sex and matrimony too much to recommend this life strategy. But compared to the predatory Chris Brown of 'Loyal' or the chauvinistic Trey Songz of 'Foreign',he's so exuberant and playful he helps me get why guys and dolls fall for it—even share their thrills some, vicariously." [178] David Jeffries of AllMusic said that the album appears to be "some post-traumatic stress therapy session mixed with a banging, ultra after-party." Jeffries praised the album's repacking and total repurposing of Tattoos commending the new production on the album stating "[Wiggle] gives the album a stripclub number in Ying Yang Twins style where everyone sounds like they're having the proper amount of fun". [49] Christgau named it the sixth best album of 2014 in his year-end list for The Barnes &Noble Review . [179]
