The Early Show is a live album by jazz saxophonist Art Pepper. It was recorded on February 12, 1952 at the Surf Club in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Xanadu Records released the album in 1976 (Xanadu 108). [2]

Contents

The Early Show and The Late Show (Xanadu 117) were both recorded the same night at the Surf Club. [3] They represent the earliest recordings with Pepper as leader (Vantage Records has released recordings made in January 1952 at the Lighthouse Café, credited to Pepper, although Shorty Rogers was the leader). Due to his prominence, the album cover gives credit to alto saxophonist Art Pepper as co-leader alongside Rogers who actually led the studio session on December 27 that also featured pianist Frank Patchen, Howard Rumsey on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. At the time the musicians also played together at the Lighthouse club in Hermosa Beach as Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars. Shortly after Art Pepper would lead his first quartet.
