The Movies is a business simulation game created by Lionhead Studios for Microsoft Windows and ported to Mac OS X by Feral Interactive. Players run a Hollywood film studio, creating films that can be exported from the game. The Movies was released in November 2005 to positive reviews and several awards, but sold poorly. An expansion, The Movies: Stunts & Effects , was released in 2006.

Gameplay

The Movies allows players to run their own movie studio, including designing the studio itself and managing the careers of film stars. The game starts at the birth of cinema and continues into the future.

Players can create their own movies using in-game assets and at one time could upload them to the game's website The Movies Online. [2]

Development

The Movies was developed by Lionhead Studios, a studio created and led by the game's executive designer, Peter Molyneux. Lead designer Mark Webley recounted that the game had been suggested by Molyneux as early as December 2001, [3] who then brainstormed a one-page concept for a film-themed management game one morning in January 2002. [4] Development of The Movies commenced in February 2002, starting from a three-man team including Webley and Lionhead colleagues Adrian Moore as lead designer and James Brown as lead programmer. [3] [5] An early version of the game was ready to show to journalists at the European Computer Trade Show in September 2002. [5]

The soundtrack for the game was composed by Daniel Pemberton. [6]

Release

Sales

The Movies was released in November 2005 and by the end of the year had sold above 50,000 copies in the United Kingdom, a number that Eurogamer's Kristan Reed called "relatively minor". [7] The game ultimately received a "Silver" sales award from the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA), indicating sales of at least 100,000 copies in the region. [8] [9]

Peter Molyneux assessed the sales performance of the game as influenced by the rise of the console market, competition with other titles over the Christmas period, and the increasing number of casual gamers in the market. [10]

Stunts and Effects

In June 2006, Lionhead studios released the expansion pack The Movies: Stunts and Effects. Feral Interactive ported the expansion to Mac OS in 2008. The expansion added stunts and stuntmen, new special effects, fewer camera placement restrictions, and expanded environments and clothing options. [11] [12]

Reception

Review aggregator Metacritic gave the PC version a score of 84 out of 100 ("Generally favorable reviews") based on 62 reviews from critics. [25] The first review was published by GameSpy, which gave the game a 3.5 out of 5. [26] Metacritic gave the expansion, The Movies: Stunts & Effects, a score of 78 out of 100 based on 37 reviews from critics. [27]

Computer Games Magazine gave The Movies their 2005 "Best Utility" and "Best Original Music" awards. [28] The game won the best simulation award at the 2006 BAFTA Video Games Awards [29]

Accolades

The Movies received several accolades as the best simulation title of the year. The game received the "Simulation" award and was nominated for "Original Score" by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts at the 2006 3rd British Academy Games Awards. [30] [31] At the 9th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards held by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, The Movies received the "Simulation Game of the Year", along with nominations for "Outstanding Innovation in Gaming" and "Computer Game of the Year". [32]

Retrospective reception

Several publications have retrospectively praised The Movies for its innovative design, whilst remarking that the game did not fully meet its ambitions. Edge describing the game as "arguably ahead of its time". [33] In 2012, Hugh Milligan of IGN stated The Movies was a "daring experiment", highlighting the game's movie-making tools and online integration as facilitating an "astonishing level of creativity" and turning what he considered a "solid but unspectacular simulation game into an incredible social experience". [34] In 2015, Graham Smith of Rock, Paper, Shotgun described the game as failing to deliver on its "interesting" concept, stating that its "creative suite is limited in terms of what you can make, and the management game splits your time between the fantasy of heading studio and the tedium of nannying people". [35] In 2016, The Guardian called The Movies's online service "[p]erhaps the most forward-thinking feature" because it pre-dated YouTube by a year. [2]

Legacy

Using The Movies, Alex Chan, a French resident with no previous filmmaking experience, took four days to create The French Democracy , a short machinima political film about the 2005 civil unrest in France. [36]

A spiritual successor, Blockbuster Inc., was released in June 2024 for the PC. [37] [38]

The company is best known for the Black & White and Fable series. Lionhead started as a breakaway from developer Bullfrog Productions, which was also founded by Molyneux. Lionhead's first game was Black & White, a god game with elements of artificial life and strategy games. Black & White was published by Electronic Arts in 2001. Black & White is a god video game developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows in 2001 and by Feral Interactive in 2002 for Mac OS. Black & White combines elements of artificial life and strategy. The player acts as a god whose goal is to defeat Nemesis, another god who wants to take over the world. A primary theme is the concept of good and evil, with the atmosphere being affected by the player's moral choices. The core gameplay mechanic of Black & White is the interaction between the player and an avatar creature, who carries out the player's instructions and whose personality and behaviour change in reaction to how they are treated. Multiplayer is supported over a local network or online.

Bullfrog Productions Limited was a British video game developer based in Guildford, England. Founded in 1987 by Peter Molyneux and Les Edgar, the company gained recognition in 1989 for their third release, Populous, and is also well known for titles such as Theme Park, Theme Hospital, Magic Carpet, Syndicate and Dungeon Keeper. Bullfrog's name was derived from an ornament in the offices of Edgar's and Molyneux's other enterprise, Taurus Impact Systems, Bullfrog's precursor where Molyneux and Edgar were developing business software. Bullfrog Productions was founded as a separate entity after Commodore mistook Taurus for a similarly named company.

Dungeon Keeper is a strategy video game developed by Bullfrog Productions and released by Electronic Arts in June 1997 for MS-DOS and Windows 95. In Dungeon Keeper, the player builds and manages a dungeon, protecting it from invading 'hero' characters intent on stealing accumulated treasures, killing monsters and ultimately the player's demise. The ultimate goal is to conquer the world by destroying the heroic forces and rival dungeon keepers in each realm. A character known as the Avatar appears as the final hero. Dungeon Keeper uses Creative Technology's SoundFont technology to enhance its atmosphere. Multiplayer with up to four players is supported using a modem, or over a local network.

<i>Republic: The Revolution</i> 2003 video game

Republic: The Revolution is a video game produced by Elixir Studios and published by Eidos Interactive and for Mac OS X by Feral Interactive. The game is a political simulation in which the player leads a political faction to overthrow the government of a fictional totalitarian country in Eastern Europe, using diplomacy, subterfuge, and violence. Development of Republic was led by Elixir Studios, a company by founder Demis Hassabis, who had previously worked on simulation games for Bullfrog Productions and Lionhead Studios. Design of the game was ambitious, with the game experiencing media hype from Demis Hassabis' descriptions of the game as a highly detailed and realistic simulation of political dynamics. The game experienced several delays, leading to the restriction of the scope of the game's features and scale.

<i>Fable</i> (2004 video game) 2004 video game

Fable is an action role-playing video game, the first in the Fable series. It was developed for the Xbox, Windows, and Mac OS X platforms by Big Blue Box Studios, a satellite developer of Lionhead Studios, and was published by Microsoft Studios. The game shipped for the Xbox in September 2004. An extended version of the game, Fable: The Lost Chapters, was released for the Xbox and Windows in September 2005. A port of the game for Mac OS X, created by Robosoft Technologies and published by Feral Interactive, was released in March 2008 after a delay of more than two years due to licensing issues.

<i>CSI: Dark Motives</i> 2004 video game

CSI: Dark Motives is a computer game based on the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation television series. The game was developed by Radical Entertainment, published by Ubisoft, and was released for the PC in 2004. In November 2007 it was remade by Powerhead Games, published by Ubisoft and released for Nintendo DS. The Microsoft Xbox version of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation also contains the cases featured in this game.

An expansion pack, MechWarrior 4: Black Knight, was released in 2001, and a subsequent stand-alone expansion, MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, was released on November 7, 2002. Two smaller expansions, Inner Sphere Mech Pak and Clan Mech Pak, were also released in 2002.

The Movies: Stunts & Effects is 2006 expansion pack for the 2005 business simulation game The Movies, developed by Lionhead Studios and distributed by Activision Publishing for Microsoft Windows and Feral Interactive for Mac OS X. Upon release, the expansion was generally well received, with praise directed to its addition of new movie-making features, and criticism of its additions of stuntmen to the micromanagement involved in the game.

Mark Webley is a British video game developer, known for working with developers such as Peter Molyneux and Gary Carr for Bullfrog Productions and later Lionhead Studios on projects including Theme Hospital and Black & White. In 2012, he took over as head of Lionhead after Molyneux left, and in 2016, he founded a studio called Two Point Studios with Carr, which has signed a publishing deal with Sega.
