Theridiosoma gemmosum is a species of spider in the family Theridiosomatidae, known as ray spiders. It is widely distributed in the Holarctic region. [1] A small spider with a shiny globular abdomen, it constructs a conical orb web.
Theridiosoma gemmosum is a small spider. Females are 2–3 mm long, males smaller still at 1.5–2 mm. In both sexes, the carapace (upper surface of the cephalothorax) is dark brown; the upper surface of the abdomen (opisthosoma) is silvery with variable dark lines and marks. The abdomen is globular, more or less circular from above. The male palpal bulbs and the female epigyne are distinctive. [2]
Theridiosoma gemmosum constructs a small orb web. The radii do not run directly to a central hub as with other orb webs, but are first joined into groups of two or three before combining to meet in the middle. A single thread runs from the centre to a nearby support, and is held by the spider. While the spider is holding this thread the tension pulls the web into a conical shape, described as "like an umbrella turned inside out". [2] When prey, such as a mosquito gets near the web, the spider releases the web, which snaps forward and catches it. Experiments indicate the spiders are listening for prey, as they will release their webs when approached by an appropriately pitched tuning fork. [3]
The species was first described by Ludwig Koch in 1877, as Theridium gemmosum. [1] (Theridium is an alternative spelling of Theridion.) Koch did not explain the origin of the species name gemmosum. The Latin word gemmosus means "set with jewels"; [4] Koch several times used the description "Perlmutter", German for "mother of pearl". [5] In 1879, Octavius Pickard-Cambridge described what he considered to be a different although closely related species. He decided that was not a Theridion , and placed it in a new genus, Theridiosoma, as T. argenteolum. [6] Eugène Simon in 1881 recognized that Koch's and Pickard-Cambridge's species were the same and united them under the current name Theridiosoma gemmosum. [7]
Theridiosoma gemmosum has a Holarctic distribution, [1] i.e. it is found throughout the northern and central parts of the Northern Hemisphere. It is described as "rare" in northern Europe, including Great Britain and Ireland. It is usually found in damp habitats, among low-growing vegetation. [2]

Tetragnatha is a genus of long-jawed orb-weavers found all over the world. It was first described by Pierre André Latreille in 1804, and it contains hundreds of species. Most occur in the tropics and subtropics, and many can run over water. They are commonly called stretch spiders in reference to their elongated body form and their ability to hide on blades of grass or similar elongated substrates by stretching their front legs forward and the others behind them. The name Tetragnatha is derived from Greek, tetra- a numerical prefix referring to four and gnatha meaning jaw. Evolution to cursorial behavior occurred long ago in a few different species, the most studied being those found on the Hawaiian islands. One of the biggest and most common species is T. extensa, which has a holarctic distribution. It can be found near lakes, river banks or swamps. Large numbers of individuals can often be found in reeds, tall grass, and around minor trees and shrubs.

Verrucosa arenata, also known as the triangle orb weaver, arrowhead spider, and arrowhead orbweaver, is a species of orb-weaver spider found across North America. It is one of the few known large orb-weaver spiders that sits facing upwards in its web. Unlike most orb-weavers, which have bulbous abdomens, V. arenata has an abdomen that is pointy and triangular, shaped like the tip of an arrow. In females, the abdomen is colored white or yellow. Additionally, V. arenata uses reeling behavior in order to capture its prey, as its webs are stronger than that of most other orb weavers. The genus name Verrucosa means "warty" in Latin, referring to the small wartlike bumps on the spider's abdomen, while the specific epithet arenata derives from Latin arena, meaning "sand".
Friula is a genus of orb-weaver spiders containing the single species, Friula wallacei. It was first described by O. Pickard-Cambridge in 1897, and has been found only on Borneo. Pickard-Cambridge based his description and drawing on a specimen collected by Alfred Russel Wallace in Sarawak between November 1854 and January 1856. Pickard-Cambridge personally confirmed with Wallace that Wallace "was the captor of this spider, and in the locality mentioned." In 2017, the Alfred Russel Wallace Memorial Fund published a call for observations of this species, stating that no specimens of the species have been collected since Wallace's and that his specimen, housed at Oxford University, is the only known specimen in the world.
