Tom Miles (born November 3,1979) is a former member of the Mississippi House of Representatives,representing the 75th district (Rankin County and Scott County) from 2012 to 2024. [1] Representative Miles is now currently serving as the Chancery Clerk of Scott County. Miles is a graduate of Morton High School and Mississippi State University. As a college student,Miles opened a business to pay for his own education.
In 2013,Miles announced a plan to introduce truth-in-labeling laws,which would require country of origin labels for chicken. [2] In 2019 Miles tweeted in favor of a new license plate design which includes the phrase "In God We Trust," after freedom from religion advocates threatened to sue the state over the design. [3]
Miles is a Sunday School teacher at Forest Baptist Church;a member of the Rankin,Scott,and Forest County Chambers of Commerce;the president of Friends of Roosevelt State Park;and a first responder for the Scott County Search and Rescue team.
Miles chose not to run for re-election to the Mississippi of House of Representatives at the end of his term in 2023. Instead,he ran for and won the position of Chancery Clerk of Scott County.[ citation needed ]

"In God We Trust" is the official motto of the United States as well as the motto of the U.S. state of Florida,and Nicaragua. It was adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1956,replacing E pluribus unum,which had been the de facto motto since the initial design of the Great Seal of the United States.

John Elliott Rankin was a Democratic politician from Mississippi who served sixteen terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1921 to 1953. He was co-author of the bill for the Tennessee Valley Authority and from 1933 to 1936 he supported the New Deal programs of President Franklin D. Roosevelt,which brought investment and jobs to the South.

Travis Wayne Childers is an American politician who served as the U.S. representative for Mississippi's 1st congressional district from 2008 to 2011. A member of the Democratic Party,Childers previously served as Chancery Clerk of Prentiss County from 1992 until his election to Congress. On March 1,2014,Childers announced that he was running for the United States Senate. He won his party's nomination for the Senate seat in the Democratic primary on June 3. He lost the general election to Republican incumbent Thad Cochran.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Mississippi since June 26,2015. On November 25,2014,U.S. District Court Judge Carlton W. Reeves of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi ruled that Mississippi's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Enforcement of his ruling was stayed pending appeal to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. On June 26,2015,the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that the denial of marriage rights to same-sex couples violates the U.S. Constitution. On June 29,Attorney General Jim Hood ordered clerks to comply with the court ruling and issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The Fifth Circuit lifted its stay on July 1,and Judge Reeves ordered an end to Mississippi's enforcement of its same-sex marriage ban. However,until July 2,2015,several counties in Mississippi continued to refuse to issue marriage licenses,including DeSoto,Jasper,Jones,Newton,Pontotoc,Simpson and Yalobusha.
Although the Confederate States of America dissolved at the end of the American Civil War (1861–1865),its battle flag continues to be displayed as a symbol. The modern display began during the 1948 United States presidential election when it was used by the Dixiecrats,a political party that opposed civil rights for African Americans. However,the Department of Justice said that this schedule would be in violation of federal law,since it would provide insufficient time for overseas and military voters to receive ballots. Evers then rescheduled the primaries for February 18,2020,and the general election for May 12,2020.
