Tropical Storm Sarika,known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Dodong,was a weak but costly tropical storm that affected Philippines and the East China in early-June 2011. The sixth tropical depression and the third named storm of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season,Sarika formed from an area of low pressure near Cebu City. As it traversed the Verde Island Passage on June 8,both the JTWC and the JMA started issuing advisories on the system,with the former issuing a TCFA on the system later that day. The next day,the PAGASA upgraded the low-pressure area to a tropical depression,naming it Dodong. Moving to the north,the system struggled to intensify due to strong wind shear and was downgraded by the JTWC to a tropical depression;however,the JMA kept the system as a minimal tropical storm until it made landfall near Shantou on June 11. It dissipated soon thereafter.
Despite the system being weak,Sarika caused 3 fatalities in the Philippines,all due to drowning and the rest are from Shantou,which are due to unknown reasons. The total damages from these affected countries are estimated at $248 million (2011 USD). [1]
An area of low pressure formed near the Verde Island Passage on June 8, to the southwest of Mariveles, Bataan. [2] The JTWC issued a TCFA on the system later that day and the PAGASA also started issuing bulletins on it due to the proximity to the Southern Luzon landmass. [3] On June 9, the PAGASA reported that the low-pressure area intensified to a tropical depression while located to the southwest of Iba, Zambales, earning the name Dodong. [4] Under marginally favorable conditions, being offset by moderate wind shear, the system slowly organized, with both the JTWC and the JMA upgrading the system to a tropical depression later that day. [2] [3] On the next day, the two agencies (JMA and the JTWC) upgraded the system to a tropical storm, with the former naming it Sarika. [2] [3] The next day, the JTWC, JMA and PAGASA all reported in their bulletins that the depression intensified to a tropical storm, with the second naming the system Sarika. [2] [3] [5] However, in the post-tropical analysis by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, they downgraded the system to a tropical depression in its peak intensity. [3] On that day, Dodong exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility, with the PAGASA issuing their last bulletin. [6] Despite being disorganized due to wind shear, Sarika continued to slowly strengthen until it made landfall near Fuzhou, China on June 11 as a weak tropical storm. [3] [7] At this time, both the JTWC and JMA issued their last bulletin on the system as it dissipated overland. [2] [3] However, its remnant moisture continued to the north until it dissipated on the same day. [7]
Throughout the Philippines and the eastern China, Sarika was blamed for 26 deaths and another 13 missings and left over $248 million worth of damages.
As Dodong formed in the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the NDRRMC issued a Public Storm Warning Signal in Cavite, Metro Manila, western Central Luzon and Pangasinan and reminded these areas to prepare and to evacuate in case of flash floods. [4] Over 325 families were evacuated to different evacuation centers and the classes in some areas were cancelled. [8] The Philippine Coast Guard-Calabarzon were also deployed in the South China Sea in case of marine emergencies and incidents. [4] Some flights were cancelled due to the bad weather. [9]
As forecasted, the newly formed depression brought scattered and sometimes, widespread rains over Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Central Luzon and the western Northern Luzon. [9] In certain areas of Bauan, the water was up to 2 meters high, said Ginette Segismundo, a provincial informant. [9] A landslide submerged a house awaiting renovations in San Pablo City in Laguna. The heavy rain that had been falling since Wednesday caused extensive power outages in San Pablo. In Calamba also, there were power interruptions. [8] In the city of Balanga, strong winds swept an electric pole and a tree while in Aurora rain caused the capital city of Baler to slip into a landslide. [8] In Malabon city, several streets have become unpassable to light cars, after floods have risen to near-cutting. [10] The NDRRMC reported three deaths and another 3 missing, all due to drowning. An individual, on the other hand, sustained a minor injury due to unknown reasons. [8] The total damages from Dodong were estimated at ₱6,192,000.00 ($127,623.62). [8]
Sarika was the first tropical cyclone in 2011 that required the Hong Kong Observatory to issue a tropical cyclone alert signal. [11] The China's State Oceanic Authority has advised vessels in the region to take more precautionary measures to prevent the storm. [12] Some individuals in Guangdong Province were also evacuated to safe places for the storm. [12]
Despite Sarika making landfall as a tropical depression near Shantou, 23 deaths were attributed to the storm, mainly due to flash floods and landslides. [13] Ten individuals were also reported missing. [13] Sarika further worsened the situations of the floods in Guangdong Province, destroying crops and farmland. The total damages from Sarika were estimated at $248 million. [11] [14]
The 2008 Pacific typhoon season was a below average season which featured 22 named storms, eleven typhoons, and two super typhoons. The season had no official bounds; it ran year-round in 2008, but most tropical cyclones tend to form in the northwestern Pacific Ocean between May and November. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.
The 2011 Pacific typhoon season was a below average season that produced a total of 21 named storms, 8 typhoons, and four super typhoons. This season was much more active than the previous season, although both seasons were below the Pacific typhoon average of 26. The season ran throughout 2011, though most tropical cyclone tend to develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Aere, developed on May 7 while the season's last named storm, Washi dissipated on December 19.
The 2017 Pacific typhoon season was a below-average season in terms of accumulated cyclone energy and the number of typhoons and super typhoons, and the first since the 1977 season to not produce a Category 5-equivalent typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson scale. The season produced a total of 27 named storms, 11 typhoons, and only two super typhoons, making it an average season in terms of storm numbers. It was an event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation, in which tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific Ocean. The season runs throughout 2017, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Muifa, developed on April 25, while the season's last named storm, Tembin, dissipated on December 26. This season also featured the latest occurrence of the first typhoon of the year since 1998, with Noru reaching this intensity on July 23.
Severe Tropical Storm Nock-ten, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Juaning, was a strong tropical storm which made a total of four landfalls in Southeast Asia, killing more than 100 people and causing damage estimated at US$126 million. It was the eighth named storm and the fourth severe tropical storm of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season.
Tropical Storm Aere, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Bebeng, was a mild tropical storm that affected eastern Philippines and southern Japan. It was the first named storm of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season. Aere is the Marshallese word for storm.
The 2020 Pacific typhoon season was the first with below-average tropical cyclone activity since 2014, with 23 named storms, 10 of which became typhoons and only 2 became super typhoons. This low activity was a consequence of La Niña that persisted from the summer of the year. It had the fifth-latest start in the basin on record, slightly behind 1973, and was the first to start that late since 2016. The first half of the season was unusually inactive, with only four systems, two named storms and one typhoon at the end of July. Additionally, the JTWC recorded no tropical cyclone development in the month of July, the first such occurrence since reliable records began. The season's first named tropical cyclone, Vongfong, developed on May 8, while the season's last named tropical cyclone, Krovanh, dissipated on December 24. However, the season's last system was an unnamed tropical depression which dissipated on December 29.
Severe Tropical Storm Rumbia, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Gorio, was a tropical cyclone that brought widespread flooding in areas of the Philippines and China late June and early July 2013. The sixth internationally named storm of the season, Rumbia formed from a broad area of low pressure situated in the southern Philippine Sea on June 27. Steadily organizing, the initial tropical depression moved towards the northwest as the result of a nearby subtropical ridge. On June 28, the disturbance strengthened to tropical storm strength, and subsequently made its first landfall on Eastern Samar in the Philippines early the following day. Rumbia spent roughly a day moving across the archipelago before emerging into the South China Sea. Over open waters, Rumbia resumed strengthening, and reached its peak intensity with winds of 95 km/h (50 mph) on July 1, ranking it as a severe tropical storm. The tropical cyclone weakened slightly before moving ashore the Leizhou Peninsula late that day. Due to land interaction, Rumbia quickly weakened into a low pressure area on July 2 and eventually dissipated soon afterwards.
Typhoon Chebi, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Queenie, was a powerful typhoon that impacted Luzon during November 2006. Chebi is the third typhoon since Typhoon Xangsane to hit the country destructively. The 30th tropical depression developed east of the Mariana Islands on October 31 as a weak disturbance. The system was dubbed into a tropical depression on November 8, until both the JMA and PAGASA upgraded it to a tropical storm on November 9. Chebi rapidly intensified to a Category 4 typhoon the next day and made landfall over northern Philippines on November 11. The system finally dissipated near Hong Kong and Vietnam on November 14.
Tropical Storm Fung-wong, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Mario, was a relatively weak tropical cyclone which affected the northern Philippines, Taiwan and the Eastern China. The sixteenth named storm of the 2014 typhoon season, Fung-wong caused severe flooding in Luzon, especially Metro Manila.
This timeline documents all of the events of the 2015 Pacific typhoon season. Most of the tropical cyclones formed between May and November. The scope of this article is limited to the Pacific Ocean, north of the equator between 100°E and the International Date Line. This area, called the Western Pacific basin, is the responsibility of the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA). They host and operate the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC), located in Tokyo. The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) is also responsible for assigning names to all tropical storms that are formed within the basin. However, any storm that enters or forms in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) will be named by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) using a local name. Also of note - the Western Pacific basin is monitored by the United States' Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), which gives all Tropical depressions a number with a "W" suffix.
Typhoon Koppu, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Lando, was a powerful and devastating tropical cyclone that struck Luzon in October 2015. It was the twenty-fourth named storm and the fifteenth typhoon of the annual typhoon season. Similar to Goni earlier in the year, Koppu originated from a tropical disturbance east of the Mariana Islands on October 10. Moving briskly west, the system consolidated into a tropical depression the following day and further into a tropical storm on October 13. Situated over the warm waters of the Philippine Sea, Koppu quickly deepened. The storm reached its peak intensity on October 17 with ten-minute sustained winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The Joint Typhoon Warning Center assessed Koppu to have been a Category 4-equivalent super typhoon with one-minute sustained winds of 240 km/h (150 mph). The storm subsequently made landfall at this strength near Casiguran, Philippines. Rapid weakening ensued due to interaction with the mountainous terrain of Luzon and the disheveled core of Koppu emerged over the South China Sea on October 19. Unfavorable environmental conditions inhibited reorganization and the system diminished to a tropical depression on October 21.
The 2022 Pacific typhoon season was the third consecutive season to have below-average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-five named storms, of which ten became typhoons, and three intensified into super typhoons. The season saw a slightly below average activity by named storm count, although many of the storms were weak and short-lived, particularly towards the end of the season. This low activity was caused by an unusually strong La Niña that had persisted from 2020. The season's first named storm, Malakas, developed on April 6, while the last named storm, Pakhar, dissipated on December 12. The season's first typhoon, Malakas, reached typhoon status on April 12. The season ran throughout 2022, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. Tropical storms Megi and Nalgae were responsible for more than half of the casualties, while typhoons Hinnamnor and Nanmadol both caused $1 billion in damages.
The 2023 Pacific typhoon season is an ongoing event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation, in which tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific Ocean. The season runs throughout 2023, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Sanvu, developed on April 21. The following month, Mawar, intensified into the first typhoon of the season on May 21, becoming one of the strongest Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclones on record in May, and the second-strongest early-season tropical cyclone, behind only Surigae in April 2021. An exceptionally notable storm was Typhoon Doksuri, which devastated the Phillipines, Taiwan and China, causing $15.4 billion in damage, as the costliest typhoon to hit Mainland China.
Tropical Depression Josie was a weak tropical system that impacted the Philippine archipelago of Luzon in July 2018, bringing widespread flooding. The tropical depression was classified in the South China Sea on July 20, and steadily moved eastward while gradually intensifying. The storm reached its peak intensity of 1-minute sustained winds of 65 km/h while nearing the northern tip of the Ilocos Region. By July 22, the system moved northward and rapidly weakened. The system was last noted on July 23 to the northeast of Taiwan.
Typhoon Saudel, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Pepito, was a typhoon which affected the Philippines, Vietnam and Southern China in October 2020. The seventeenth tropical storm and seventh typhoon of the 2020 Pacific typhoon season. The name Saudel was used for the first time, replacing Typhoon Soudelor in 2015, which caused serious damages in Taiwan and Mainland China. Saudel formed from a tropical disturbance east of the Philippines. The disturbance gradually organized and crossed the Philippines as a tropical storm. Once the system emerged into the South China Sea, it began to rapidly organize and intensify, becoming a typhoon early on October 22.
Typhoon Toraji, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Isang, was one of the deadliest tropical cyclones to hit the island country of Taiwan, since 1961. The eight named storm and the third typhoon of the 2001 Pacific typhoon season, Toraji's origins were from an area of convection that persisted to the west of Guam. Moving north-northwest over favorable conditions, the disturbance intensified to a tropical depression, while the JTWC issued a TCFA on the newly developed system. On July 26, the depression entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility, with the PAGASA naming it Isang. Strong easterly wind shear inhibited further development; however, as the shear relaxed, both the JTWC and PAGASA upgraded the system to a tropical storm with also the JMA following suit hours later. Now named Toraji, the storm slowly intensified, reaching typhoon status on the next day. Toraji continued to gain strength until it made landfall as a Category 2 typhoon near Taipei on July 29. Despite the rugged terrains of the country, the JTWC upgraded the system further to a Category 3, shortly before weakening as it moved offshore on Taiwan Strait. The JMA and PAGASA downgraded the typhoon to a tropical storm, with the latter issuing their final advisory as it moved out of their AOR. It continued to weaken, with the JTWC also downgrading the system to a tropical storm, before making landfall near Fuzhou on July 31 before it was last noted by the next day.
Typhoon Songda, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Chedeng, was the strongest tropical cyclone worldwide in 2011. It caused moderate damage in the Philippines when it paralleled the country to the east as a Category 5–equivalent super typhoon; it later affected Taiwan and Japan as a weakening system. The fourth tropical depression, second named storm and the first super typhoon of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season, Songda formed from a non-tropical low that was embedded from the Intertropical Convergence Zone on May 17. An area of low-pressure subsequently formed and became organized for the JTWC to issue a TCFA on the system and the JMA to issue advisories, before both agencies declared it a tropical storm, earning the name Songda. Under favorable conditions, Songda slowly intensified as it entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility, with the PAGASA naming it Chedeng on May 23. On the next day, the three agencies declared the system a typhoon before rapidly intensifying to a super typhoon over the Philippine Sea. As it entered an unfavorable environment for further strengthening, Songda slowly weakened as it passed near Taiwan, before becoming extratropical near Japan. The remnants of the system slowly moved to the northeast, before absorbing to another extratropical cyclone to the south of Alaska.
Tropical Storm Choi-wan, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Dante, was a tropical storm which caused moderate flooding and damage in the Philippines and also affected Taiwan. The third named storm of the 2021 Pacific typhoon season, Choi-wan originated from an area of low pressure, located south-southeast of Guam near a brewing system. Fueled by an environment favorable for tropical cyclogenesis, it developed into a tropical depression, two days later as it moved westward. At 00:00 UTC on May 31, the system strengthened to a tropical storm and was named Choi-wan by the JMA. Although the storm was still located in the conductive conditions off the Philippine Sea while moving northwestward, a tropical upper tropospheric trough to the northeast halted the system's intensification, with Choi-wan's convection displaced to the south of its circulation on satellite imagery.
Severe Tropical Storm Kompasu, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Maring was a very large and deadly tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines, Taiwan, and southeast China. Part of the 2021 Pacific typhoon season, Kompasu originated from an area of low pressure east of the Philippines on 6 October 2021. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) classified it as a tropical depression that day. A day later, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) classified it as a tropical depression, naming it Maring. The cyclone was initially heavily disorganised, competing with another vortex, Tropical Depression Nando. Eventually, Maring became dominant, and the JMA reclassified it as a tropical storm, naming it Kompasu. Kompasu made landfall in Cagayan, Philippines, on 11 October 2021, and two days later, the storm made landfall in Hainan, China. The cyclone dissipated on 14 October 2021 while located over Vietnam.
Severe Tropical Storm Nalgae, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Paeng, was a very large and deadly tropical cyclone that wreaked havoc across the Philippines and later impacted Hong Kong and Macau. Nalgae, meaning wing in Korean, the twenty-second named storm of the 2022 Pacific typhoon season, Nalgae originated from an invest located east of the Philippines on October 26. The disturbance, initially designated as 93W, was eventually upgraded the following day to a tropical depression by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and re-designated as 26W. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) however, had already considered the disturbance as a tropical depression a day prior to JTWC's; the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) also followed the JMA's lead and gave it the name Paeng. That same day, it was upgraded again by the JMA to tropical storm status, thus gaining the name Nalgae. The next day, the PAGASA and the JTWC upgraded Nalgae to a severe tropical storm status on October 28. Nalgae would eventually made its first landfall in Virac, Catanduanes, which was quickly followed by another landfall thirty minutes later. It then traversed the Bicol Region and emerged into Ragay Gulf, eventually making another landfall. Defying initial forecasts, Nalgae then moved southwestward and struck Mogpog. Afterwards, the storm moved northwestward into the Sibuyan Sea and struck Sariaya. Then it would move through many regions throughout the evening of October 29. Nalgae emerged over the West Philippine Sea the next day and weakened below tropical storm status. The storm would later re-intensify into a severe tropical storm a few hours later, and eventually exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility a day later. Upon its exit from Philippine jurisdiction, Nalgae then intensified into a Category 1-equivalent typhoon on JTWC; however, the JMA maintained its severe tropical storm classification for the system. It then approached the Pearl River Delta. At around 04:50 CST on November 3, 2022, Nalgae made its final landfall at Xiangzhou District as a tropical depression.
