The Ukrainian Catholic Apostolic Exarchate of Italy (Latin : Exarchatus Apostolicus Italiae Ucrainorum) is an Apostolic Exarchate (pre-diocesan jurisdiction) of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church covers its faithful in Italy and San Marino.

History

Early history

At the end of the 20th century, Greek Catholics had only three churches in Italy. They all were in Rome. However, with the onset of emigration from Ukraine to Italy, thousands of people arrived for which mission stations were established. On 16 October 2001, by agreement between Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Episcopal Conference of Italy was appointed pastoral coordinator, Rev. Vasyl Potochnyak, with a task to coordinate these missionary stations. Also on 14 January 2003 was appointed Apostolic visitor, bishop Hlib Lonchyna, who was deputed to investigate circumstance of the Ukrainian faithful in country, and to submit a report to the Holy See and to the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. He was replaced by bishop Dionisio Lachovicz in 2009. [1]

Establishment

It was established on 11 July 2019 by Pope Francis for the 145 Ukrainian Greek Catholic parishes. The circumscription encompasses the entire Italian territory. The Church of Santi Sergio e Bacco, that is located on Piazza Madonna dei Monti in the rione of Monti in Rome, become the cathedral. [2] [ clarification needed ]

On 31 May 2021, the Ukrainian Catholic Apostolic Exarchate of Italy decided to switch  [ uk ] to the Gregorian calendar from 1 September 2021. [3]

As for November 2022 the Apostolic Exarchate has 170 parishes, [4] and as for May 2024 there are 174 parishes, 80 priests (38 of them are married) and 5 seminarians. [5]

The Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Przemyśl–Warsaw is an ecclesiastical territory or ecclesiastical province of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church — a particular Eastern Catholic Church, that is located in the south-eastern part of Poland. It was erected in 1996. Its Byzantine Rite services are conducted in the Ukrainian language. As a metropolitan see, it has two suffragan sees: Olsztyn–Gdańsk and Wrocław-Koszalin. Daniel Kozelinski Netto is the Apostolic Administrator sede vacante of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Eparchy of Santa Maria del Patrocinio in Buenos Aires since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on 22 June 2011. He had previously served as Auxiliary Bishop of São João Batista in Ukraine in Curitiba.

The Greek Catholic Apostolic Exarchate of Constantinople is an Apostolic Exarchate of the Greek Byzantine Catholic Church which is an Eastern Catholic Church. As a sui iuris (autonomous) Church, it is in full communion with the Holy See. In its liturgical services it uses the Byzantine Rite in the Greek language. It is effectively defunct.

The Exarchate of Saints Cyril and Methodius of Toronto is a ecclesiastical territory or exarchate that serves the Slovak Greek Catholic Church — a sui juris or self governing Eastern Catholic Church. Its geographical remit includes the whole territory of Canada. In 2022, Pope Francis transferred the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the exarchate from the Slovak Greek Catholic Church to the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church. It became part of the ecclesiastical Metropolis of Pittsburgh. This changed the territory's status from an eparchy to an exarchate at the same time.

Bishop Dionisio Paulo Lachovicz, O.S.B.M. is a Brazilian-born Ukrainian Greek Catholic hierarch. He was an Apostolic Visitor for the Ukrainian Greek Catholics in Italy and Spain. Prior to this appointment, he served as a Curial Bishop of the Major Archeparchy of Kyiv-Halych from December 21, 2005, until January 19, 2009, under the title of Titular Bishop of Egnatia. From September 5, 2019, he is a Delegate with the rights of Apostolic Exarch for the Ukrainian Catholic Apostolic Exarchate of Italy.
