Fighter Squadron 71 or VF-71 was an aviation unit of the United States Navy. Originally established as VGS-18 on 15 October 1942, it was redesignated VC-18 on 1 March 1943, redesignated as VF-36 on 15 August 1943, redesignated as VF-18 on 5 March 1944, redesignated as VF-7A on 15 November 1946, redesignated as VF-71 on 28 July 1948 and disestablished on 31 March 1959. Operational history

VGS-18

Escort-Scouting Squadron 18 was established on 15 October 1942. It first operated out of NAS Seattle [2] before moving to NAS Whidbey Island in December 1942. [3] There it was temporarily attached to Air Wing Six for instruction. [4]

VC-18

Beginning 1 March 1943, the US Navy changed its squadron designations. Among these changes, Escort-Scouting (VGS) squadrons were redesignated Composite (VC) squadrons. The squadron also relocated in March, transferring from Whidbey Island to NAS San Diego. [5] Instruction in carrier operations continued at this time including torpedo bombing practice with the Grumman TBF Avenger. [6]

VF-36

By 20 November 1943, the relatively new VF-36 squadron completed carrier qualification aboard USS Copahee. [7] Fighting 36 joined up with Air Group 18 in February 1944 and changed its designation to VF-18, the previous fighter squadron having been detached and its pilots transferred to other squadrons. [8] :2

VF-18

The squadron embarked aboard USS Intrepid after significant delays. Repairs to the ship's damaged rudder took longer than expected and additional mechanical problems developed as soon as it left Pearl Harbor on 28 July 1944. [9] The squadron's combat cruise aboard Intrepid also ended prematurely. On 25 November 1944 two successive Kamikaze attacks caused extensive damage to the ship, requiring it to leave the combat zone for repairs. [10] Because of these occurrences, VF-18 only conducted strikes aboard Intrepid from the period 6 September – 25 November 1944. They briefly served aboard USS Hancock afterward. [8] :3

In spite of their short tour of duty, "Two-a-Day 18" was credited with 172 enemy planes shot down and produced a number of ace pilots including the high-scoring Cecil E. Harris. [11] The squadron participated in one of the last major air battles against Japanese aviators during strikes against Japanese-held Formosa on 12 October 1944, and along with the rest of their air group were the first pilots to strike at Admiral Takeo Kurita's Center Force in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. [12]

VF-71

VF-71 was assigned to Carrier Air Group Seven (CVG-7) aboard USS Bon Homme Richard, which was deployed to Korea from 20 May 1952 to 8 January 1953. During this deployment VF-71 participated in the Attack on the Sui-ho Dam from 23–7 June 1952.

While embarked on USS Intrepid as part of Carrier Air Group Six VF-71 participated in Operation Strikeback from 3–12 September 1957.

VF-71 was embarked on the USS Randolph for a Mediterranean deployment from 2 September 1958 to 12 March 1959.

Alexander Vraciu was a United States Navy fighter ace, Navy Cross recipient, and Medal of Honor nominee during World War II. At the end of the war, Vraciu ranked fourth among the U.S. Navy's flying aces, with 19 enemy planes downed during flight and 21 destroyed on the ground. After the war, he served as a test pilot and was instrumental in forming the post-war Naval and Marine Air Reserve program. From 1956 to 1958 Vraciu led his own fighter squadron, VF-51, for twenty-two months. He retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of commander on December 31, 1963. Vraciu later moved to Danville, California, and worked for Wells Fargo.

It was originally established as VF-5 on 1 February 1927, redesignated as VF-5S on 1 July 1927, redesignated as VF-5B in January 1928, redesignated VB-1B on 1 July 1928, redesignated VF-5B on 1 July 1930, redesignated VF-5S in July 1932, redesignated VF-5B in April 1933, redesignated VF-4 on 1 July 1937, redesignated VF-41 on 15 March 1941, redesignated VF-4 on 4 August 1943, redesignated VF-1A on 15 November 1946, redesignated VF-11 on 2 August 1948 and disestablished on 15 February 1959. It was the second US Navy squadron to be designated VF-11.

Fighter Squadron 111 (VF-111), also known as the Sundowners, was a fighter squadron of the United States Navy. Originally established as Fighter Squadron 11 (VF-11) on 10 October 1942, it was redesignated as VF-11A on 15 November 1946, redesignated as VF-111 on 15 July 1948 and disestablished on 19 January 1959. On 20 January, another squadron, VF-111 (1956-95) then assumed the designation until its de-establishment in 1995. In November 2006, VFC-13 Detachment Key West was redesignated as VFC-111, taking on the Sundowner insignia and callsign.

Attack Squadron 35 (VA-35) was an aviation unit of the United States Navy. The squadron's nickname is unknown. Its insignia, a winged dragon, was revised several times during its lifetime. The squadron was first established as Torpedo and Bombing Squadron 2 (VT-2) on 6 July 1925, and was redesignated as VT-2B on 1 July 1927, VT-3 on 1 July 1937, VA-4A on 15 November 1946, and, finally, VA-35 on 7 August 1948. The squadron was disestablished on 7 November 1949. It was the first squadron to carry the VA-35 designation, the second VA-35 was redesignated from VA-34 on 15 February 1950 and disestablished on 31 January 1995.

It was finally redesignated VA-34 on 1 July 1955. The squadron was disestablished on 1 June 1969. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Cecil E. Harris</span> American naval aviator

Captain Cecil Elwood "Cece" Harris was an American schoolteacher, naval aviator and flying ace of World War II. Harris is remembered for actions in the Pacific Ocean Theater, which earned him nine combat medals including the Navy Cross, the highest award for valor after the Medal of Honor. He ended the war as the navy's second-highest-scoring ace after David McCampbell (34), credited with shooting down 24 Japanese planes. Harris scored 16 of his aerial victories in four different days, downing four enemy aircraft on each of those days. Never during the course of his 88-day tour with VF-18 did a bullet hit his aircraft. It has been said that Harris "was arguably the most consistently exceptional fighter pilot in the US Navy".

Fighter Squadron 8 or VF-8 was an aviation unit of the U.S. Navy, originally established on 1 June 1943, it was disestablished on 23 November 1945. It was the second US Navy squadron to be designated VF-8.

VP-148 was a Patrol Squadron of the U.S. Navy. The squadron was established as Bombing Squadron 148 (VB-148) on 16 August 1943, redesignated Patrol Bombing Squadron 148 (VPB-148) on 1 October 1944, redesignated Patrol Squadron 148 (VP-148) on 15 May 1946 and disestablished on 14 June 1946.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cornelius N. Nooy</span> American fighter ace

Cornelius Nicholas Nooy was a United States Navy flying ace of World War II. Nooy ended the war as the highest-scoring fighter pilot operating from a light aircraft carrier (CVL), and tied for fourth-highest-scoring ace in the US Navy. Nooy served two tours with VF-31's "Flying Meataxers" aboard USS Cabot and USS Belleau Wood. The first of these tours set a record for kills by a CVL fighter squadron.

William Edward Ellis was a vice admiral in the U.S. Navy. He ended his 40 year career as Chief of Staff to the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (SACLANT). Ellis first distinguished himself as a naval aviator during World War II, during which time he earned commendations for service in the North African Campaign and, later, valor awards for his leadership as Commander Air Group 18 aboard USS Intrepid.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Edward Cobb Outlaw</span>

RADM Edward Cobb Outlaw was a naval aviator, flying ace, ship's captain and fleet commander of the United States Navy. Outlaw first served as commanding officer of Fighting Squadron 32 (VF-32) aboard the light carrier USS Langley during World War II. He was awarded the Navy Cross for a mission with this squadron in which he shot down five Japanese planes, making him an ace in a day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ira C. Kepford</span> American flying ace

Ira Cassius Kepford was an American flying ace of World War II who served with a land-based unit of the United States Navy. In 76 days of combat flying with the VF-17 "Jolly Rogers," he was credited with shooting down 16 enemy aircraft. At the close of his combat service in April 1944, Kepford was the Navy's leading ace.

Fighting Squadron 18 (VF-18) was an aviation unit of the United States Navy which served aboard USS Intrepid (CV-11) in the fall of 1944. It was the second squadron to bear the designation VF-18.
