Medinipur or Midnapore and originally Madanipur is a city known for its history in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the West Medinipur district. It is situated on the banks of the Kangsabati River. The Urban Agglomeration of Midnapore consists of the city proper, Mohanpur, Keranichati and Khayerullachak. Midnapore and its neighbouring city of Kharagpur constitute the central core of the Midnapore Kharagpur Development Authority metro area, spread across 576 square kilometres.

Rajnarayan Basu (1826–1899) was an Indian writer and intellectual of the Bengal Renaissance. He was born in Boral in 24 Parganas and studied at the Hare School and Hindu College, in Kolkata, Bengal. A monotheist at heart, Basu converted to the Brahmoism sect at the age of twenty. After retiring, he was given the honorary title of Rishi or sage. As a writer, he was one of the best known prose writers in Bengali in the nineteenth century, writing often for the Tattwabodhini Patrika, a premier Brahmo journal. Due to his defence of Brahmoism, he was given the title "Grandfather of Indian Nationalism".

K.D. College of Commerce and General Studies is an undergraduate, co-educational college situated in Midnapore, West Bengal. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University, formerly known as West Bengal University of Teachers' Training, Education Planning and Administration (WBUTTEPA), was established by an Act of the West Bengal legislature published in the Kolkata Gazette, Extraordinary, 16 January 2015. This is the first university in India set up by any State Government exclusively for training teachers. The university was established in 2015 and Prof. Mita Banerjee became the first Vice Chancellor. It offers different teacher's training courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
