Imphal is the capital city of the Indian state of Manipur. It is the second largest city in Northeast India. The metropolitan centre of the city contains the ruins of Kangla Palace, the royal seat of the former Kingdom of Manipur, surrounded by a moat. Spread over parts of the districts of Imphal West and Imphal East, the former contains the majority of the city's area and population. Imphal is part of the Smart Cities Mission under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Manipur University is a central university located in Imphal, Manipur, India. It was established on 5 June 1980, under the Manipur University Act, 1980, as a teaching cum-affiliating university with territorial jurisdiction over the state of Manipur. It was converted into a central university under the Manipur University Act, 2005 w.e.f. 13 October 2005.

The Manipur Institute of Technology was established on 28th August 1998 by the Government of Manipur as Pioneer Engineering College in the State. On 31st December 2003, the College was renamed as Manipur College of Technology and the management of the College was handed over to a Society headed by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur as Chairman. Further, the Institute was renamed as Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT) since 4th February 2005. MIT became a Constituent College of Manipur University w.e.f. 13th October 2005 and it is being maintained by the Manipur University out of the funds made available to it by the University Grants Commission.
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was established on 14 September 1972 in the name of the Regional Medical College. It is situated in a locality at Lamphelpat in Manipur, India. It is run by a society named "North Eastern Regional Medical College Society" which was duly registered under the Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989.
National Institute of Technology Manipur is an Institute of National Importance situated in Imphal, Manipur, India. It is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India. NIT Manipur started its first academic session in 2010.

It is an "Institute of National Importance", declared by an act of parliament.
The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a group of autonomous government public medical universities of higher education under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance. AIIMS New Delhi, the forerunner institute, was established in 1956 under administration of Jawaharlal Nehru. Since then, 24 more institutes were announced.
