Weightlifting has been a sport of the Pan American Games since the 1951 games. Women's took place at 1999 edition. [1]

Contents

Like the Olympic Games, Clean and press was perfomed along with Snatch and Cleand and Jerk. Since Clean and Press was eliminated for weightlifting program in 1972, the 1975 Pan American Games were the first held with the present format.

Weightlifting is a competitive strength sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with the aim of successfully lifting the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead. The snatch is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. The clean and jerk is a combination lift, in which the weight is first taken from the ground to the front of the shoulders, and then from the shoulders to over the head. The sport formerly included a third lift/event known as clean and press.

Christine Girard is a Canadian weightlifter from Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. She competes in the 63 kg division. Girard was the first Canadian female to win a medal in weightlifting when she won gold at the 2012 London Olympics. She also won Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games titles in her weight class and has won multiple medals in each of those competitions. She holds the Commonwealth games record and the Pan-American Games record in the Clean and Jerk.

Sarah Elizabeth Robles is an American weightlifter. She qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and earned a bronze medal in weightlifting at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the first US athlete to medal in Olympic weightlifting in 16 years. She repeated her feat in the +87 kg category at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, once again earning bronze, and becoming the first US woman to earn two Olympic weightlifting medals.

Fernando Saraiva Reis is a Brazilian weightlifter. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Rio Games, finishing 11th and 5th, respectively. He won a bronze medal in the 2018 World Championships and is a three-time Pan American Games champion.

Weightlifting was one of the sports contested at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia. In this edition, four sets of medals were awarded for each weight. It was the last games in which clean and press was performed, as it was eliminated for the weightlifting competition next year.

She competed in the 75 kg category until 2018 and 76 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. She is the older sister of Angie Palacios.

Maude G. Charron is a Canadian weightlifter, who competes in the 63/64 kg category and represents Canada at international competitions. She is an Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion in the women's 64 kg division. Charron also owns the clean & jerk Commonwealth Games record, the snatch and total Canadian weightlifting records, all the Panamerican records in her weight class.

Katherine Vibert is an American weightlifter, Olympian, World Champion, Pan American champion and Junior World Champion competing in the 69 kg category until 2018 and 71 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. She is a winner of the IWF Female Lifter of the Year for 2019.

Verónica Estela Saladín Tolentino is a weightlifter from the Dominican Republic. She won the silver medal in the women's +87 kg event at the 2019 Pan American Games held in Lima, Peru. She is also a three-time silver medalist at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships and a two-time medalist, including gold, at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Luis David Bardalez Tuisima is a Peruvian weightlifter. He won a bronze medal at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru and at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. He is a three-time medalist at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships.

Olivia Lynn Reeves is an American weightlifter. She won the gold medal in the women's 71 kg event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. In 2023, she won the bronze medal in her event at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2024, she won the gold medal in that event with a combined lift of 267 kg. She became the first U.S. lifter in 66 years to hold both the world title and an Olympic gold in the same year. She won the gold medal in the women's 81 kg event at the 2023 Pan American Games held in Santiago, Chile.
