Wheelerenomyia is an extinct genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae, known from the Eocene of the Baltic region. The genus was first described in 1907 by Fernand Meunier, who named it after William Morton Wheeler. [2] It is close to the Mesorhagini. [3]
The genus contains 13 species. Originally it had only one species, W. eocenica; in 2008, Igor Grichanov moved 14 extinct species from other sciapodine genera ( Amesorhaga , Nematoproctus , Psilopus – now Sciapus – and Neurigona ) to the genus. [3] In 2024, a new species, W. negrobovi, was described, while three others were synonymized. [4] All species in the genus have strongly sinuate vein M, and were found from Baltic amber. [3]
Argyra is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. The name "Argyra" comes from the Greek word for "silver", referring to the silver pruinescence found on the males of many of the species.
Amesorhaga is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. All species in the genus are from the Oriental realm.
Anepsiomyia is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. It contains only one extant species from Europe, A. flaviventris, as well as two fossil species from the Eocene of Russia and Belarus. The systematic position of the genus is currently uncertain: it has been variously placed in subfamilies such as Sympycninae and Peloropeodinae.
Asyndetus is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. There are more than 100 species described for the genus, distributed worldwide.
Guzeriplia is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. It is known from southern Russia, Georgia, China and Turkey. It is considered a synonym of Chrysotimus by some authors, but is considered a separate genus by others.
Medetera is a large genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. It includes about 350 species worldwide. The adults are commonly found resting on vertical surfaces such as tree trunks, on which they have a characteristic vertical upright stance. Because of this stance, they are sometimes known as "woodpecker flies". Medetera adults are predators of soft-bodied arthropods, while the larvae are predators of bark beetle larvae.
Palaeoargyra is an extinct genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae, known from Baltic amber. It contains only one species, Palaeoargyra mutabilis. It was originally proposed as a subgenus of Argyra, but was later considered a separate genus.
Palaeomedeterus is an extinct genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae, known from Baltic amber and Cambay amber from the Eocene. The genus was first proposed by Fernand Meunier in 1895 with no included species or description, though illustrations were provided for six different unnamed species.
Prochrysotus is an extinct genus of fly in the family Dolichopodidae, known from the Eocene of the Baltic region. It contains only one species, Prochrysotus magnus.
Rhaphium is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. It is the largest genus within the subfamily Rhaphiinae, with over 200 species currently known.
Systenus is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae.
Medeterinae is a subfamily of flies in the family Dolichopodidae.
Peloropeodinae is a subfamily of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. In some classifications, the genera of the subfamily are included in Sympycninae. According to a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the family Dolichopodidae by Germann et al. (2011), the subfamily is polyphyletic.
Systenites is an extinct genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae, known from Baltic amber.
Prohercostomus is an extinct genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae, known from Baltic amber from the Eocene. It was originally created as a subgenus of Hercostomus, but was later raised to genus rank.
Microphor is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae, subfamily Microphorinae.
