WiMP is a music streaming service available on mobile devices, tablets, network players and computers. WiMP, standing for "Wireless Music Player," [1] was a music streaming service that emphasized high-quality audio. WiMP offered music and podcasts for users to listen to. It was initially created as a high-fidelity streaming service aimed at audiophiles, offering music in high-resolution formats such as FLAC and ALAC. [2] [3] [4]

History

WiMP was developed by Aspiro AB and the Norwegian music store chain Platekompaniet AS. It was first launched in Norway in February 2010. [2]

On January 30, 2015, [5] [6] it was announced that Aspiro AB had been acquired by Project Panther Bidco Ltd., which is indirectly owned by S. Carter Enterprises, LLC. [7] The company was controlled by Shawn Corey Carter, better known by his stage name, Jay-Z. Aspiro AB was sold for 464 million SEK, which is about €50 million or US $56 million. However, WiMP would later merge with Tidal under the Tidal name. [8]

Cost and availability

WiMP was funded by paid subscriptions such as music fees and subscriptions. As of 2012, [9] WiMP is available in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Poland. [10]

Tidal

The service is also available in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, [11] France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Turkey, [12] where it is known as Tidal; [13] and emphasizes the high-fidelity lossless mode, but the other modes, "High" and "Normal," are also available. Tidal claims to have 80 million tracks.

Last.fm integration

The application is integrated with Last.fm allowing a track to be "scrobbled."[ citation needed ]

Catalog and editorial experience

WiMP gives access to a music library of some 25 million tracks. WiMP has local editors in each country it operates, to present the local and international music and in-app magazines also available online. WiMP also offers music videos, so far available in the Android-client. [14]

Mobile devices

WiMP is compatible with, Android, [15] iOS, [16] Symbian, MeeGo, [17] Windows Phone 7, and Windows Phone 8, as well as Squeezebox, Sonos, Simple Audio, Auralic, Teufel and Bluesound. [18]

Radical.FM was a digital music streaming service available on iOS devices, Android devices, and desktop web browsers. The service allows users to create their own custom online radio stations based on musical genres. Unlike other streaming services like Spotify and Pandora Radio, Radical.FM is completely free and based on donations through a "pay-what-you-can" model. The mobile application does not show or have audio ads, or charge subscription fees.

These services offer streaming of full-length content via the Internet as a part of their service, without the listener necessarily having to purchase a file for download. This type of service is somewhat similar to Internet radio. Many of these sites have advertising that supports free-to-listen options as well as paid subscription-based premium options.

SoundayMusic is a geosocial networking mobile music streaming app that enables users to listen to and track the music their friends and neighbors are playing in real time. YouTube Premium is a subscription service offered by the American video platform YouTube. The service provides ad-free access to content across the service, as well as access to premium YouTube Originals programming produced in collaboration with the site's creators, downloading videos and background playback of videos on mobile devices, and access to the music streaming service, YouTube Music, along with other benefits. It has over 100 million subscribers.

Aspiro AB was a Norwegian-based, legally Swedish-domiciled technology company founded in 1998. The company mainly provided subscription-based lossless music streaming services under its two brands, Tidal and WiMP. The company was headquartered in Norway, with additional offices in Poland, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany.

Project Panther Bidco Ltd. is a British-American holding company. The company was founded in 2014 by Roc Nation CEO, Laurence Brown Jr., but indirectly owned and controlled by rapper and businessman Shawn Carter, also known as Jay-Z, to purchase the assets of Norwegian technology company Aspiro. By purchasing Aspiro, the company became the sole owner of the music streaming services TIDAL and WiMP. WiMP merged into Tidal in March 2015. In March 2021, majority ownership in Tidal was acquired by Block, Inc.
