Etymology

This area got its name from a famous nineteenth-century Muslim Saint Kunangudi Masthan Sahib. His birthplace is located near Thondi in Ramanathapuram District. He meditated in a place known as "Lebbai Kaadu" in Chennai. The locals called him "Thondiar", meaning "Man hailing from Thondi". Later, Lebbai Kaadu came to be known as Tondiarpet. [1] Hazarath Kunangudi Masthan Sahib Dargah located in Royapuram near Tondiarpet is visited by people of all faith. His writings are hailed by all people and are available in a textbook labeled as Gnana Sidhar Kunangudiar. It is available at his dargah in Royapuram.

Location

The place is located in the northern part of Chennai and close to Bay of Bengal. It shares its boundaries with other important regions of Chennai including George Town, which is a couple of kilometers to the south. Chennai Airport is about 26 km away from here. The region has its own railway station, Tondiarpet Railway Station, on the Chennai Central–Gummidipoondi Line.

Economy

Trade and commerce flourishes in the township of Tondiarpet. Manufacturing and distributing enterprises are abundantly found at Tondiarpet. The region has a good number of export houses which primarily deal in silk apparels and jewellery. A good number of outlets merchandising plastic ware and metal ware are prevalent in the suburbs. The region also houses the fishing harbour. The Fish Marketing Office is also situated here. The place constitutes Zone-I and houses the zonal office of the Corporation of Chennai.

Amenities

The southern part of Tondiarpet has many banks and hospitals. Some medical facility providers include Apollo Hospital, Malinga Hospital, Government Peripheral Hospital, Communicable Diseases Hospital, and ESIC Hospital. A development project involving installation of public toilets, Corporation schools, gymnasia and health centres was undertaken by Corporation of Chennai in 2004, which has improved the region to a great extent.

Southern Railway zone Railway zone of Indian Railways

The Southern Railway, headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered in 1859. Its original headquarters was in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and was registered as a company in London only in 1890. At present, after re-organization of existing railway zones and creation of new zones undertaken by the Indian Railways between 2002–03, Southern Railway has emerged as the 4th largest zone after undertaking some gauge conversion projects and creation of new lines.

Ramachandran Central metro station, Chennai Park railway station, Park Town railway station and is 2 km from Chennai Egmore railway station. Basin Bridge railway station

Basin Bridge Junction is a station on the Chennai Suburban Railway and serves the locality of Basin Bridge, the confluence on the Otteri Nullah and Buckingham Canal, in Chennai, India. The station is located at the southern end of the 'diamond' junction in Chennai, where all the lines of the Chennai Suburban Railway meet. It is the first station after Chennai Central. At this station, the line divides into three: one going towards Avadi and Arakkonam, the other towards Ennore and Gummidipoondi, and the third towards Chennai Beach and Chennai Egmore. Thus, the station acts as the entry point to Chennai Central terminus where inbound trains from all the three lines are stopped before assigning a platform at Chennai Central. It also contains a railway maintenance shed with 19 pit-lines, each measuring 3-ft deep to accommodate about 24 coaches. The station has an elevation of 7 m above sea level.

Royapuram railway station

Royapuram railway station is a railway station at Royapuram, on the Chennai Beach–Katpadi section of the Chennai Suburban Railway network in Chennai, India. It is the second oldest railway station currently operational in India after Howrah railway station situated in Howrah, West Bengal and the first railway station of South India. The first train of South India started operating in June 1856 from Royapuram railway station. The station also remained the headquarters of the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway till 1922, when the headquarters was shifted to Egmore. Since the original structures of Bombay and Thane stations no longer exist, Royapuram station remains the oldest railway station in the entire subcontinent.

Washermanpet railway station is one of the railway stations in Chennai, India. It is one of the stations of the Chennai Beach–Gummidipoondi and Chennai Beach-Arakkonam sections of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. Tondiarpet railway station is one of the railway station of the Chennai Central–Gummidipoondi section of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. It serves the neighbourhood of Tondiarpet, a suburb of Chennai, and is located 5 km north of Chennai Central railway station. It has an elevation of 5 m above sea level.

North Chennai is a geographic term used to refer to the northern part of Chennai city. Though its definition has varied with time and context, it is generally accepted among historians that North Chennai is used for the part of Chennai city situated north of the Coovum River. Encompassing the Fort St George and Georgetown areas from which the city originated, North Chennai is generally considered an area of stagnant growth,but now it is developing that has already reached saturation as a real estate choice. The area is generally notorious for its thick population, narrow roads, poor infrastructure, and high incidence of crime. This characterization is, however, limited to older neighbourhoods close to the sea coast as new areas to the west, like Kilpauk, Anna Nagar, Avadi and Ambattur have good standards of living and acquired desirability as residential areas.

Diesel Loco Shed, Tondiarpet is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for diesel locomotives of the Indian Railways. It is located near Tondiarpet railway station (TNP) of the Southern Railway zone in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu and is one of the four diesel loco sheds of the Southern Railway, the others being at Ernakulam (ERS) at Kochi, Erode (ED) and Golden Rock (GOC) at Trichy.

Tondiarpet Metro station is a Metro railway station on Line 1 Extension of the Chennai Metro. The station is one of the 26 stations along the Blue Line of the Chennai Metro. The station will serve the neighbourhoods of Tondiarpet and other northern suburbs of Chennai.

Kunangudi Masthan Sahib (1800-1847) was a Tamil Qadiriyya Sufi poet and composer. His songs remain popular today, especially in the Gaana music of Chennai.
