Teynampet, also Teynampettai, is one of the busiest commercial localities in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. [1] Part of the city's central business district, it is surrounded by Gopalapuram in the north, Mylapore in the east, Alwarpet in the south, Nandanam in the south-west and T.Nagar in the west. [2] The Teynampet Signal is one of the most important road junctions in Chennai and witnesses some of the worst traffic during peak hours in the city. [3] Teynampet is home to some of the most expensive real estate and properties in Chennai. [1] The Teynampet section of Anna Salai hosts some of the most important Government offices and luxury hotels in the city. [4]

Etymology

Teynampet is along Anna Salai, the arterial road of Chennai. Teynampet derives its name from Thennam and pettai (Place of coconut trees) due to the coconut groves that once existed there.

Geography

As of 2018, Teynampet zone had a green cover of more than 20 percent, as against the city's 14.9 percent average. [5]

Notable landmarks

Poes Garden houses two of the most celebrated houses in Chennai; residences of former chief minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa and Actor Rajinikanth. [6] Gopalapuram area houses the residence of former chief minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi. Teynampet also houses Anna Arivalayam, which is the headquarters of the DMK party, also PMK party headquarters at Vannia Teynampet [7] and upscale hotels such as Hyatt Regency and Marriott Courtyard. The famous Diocesan Church and the Gemini Flyover are also in this region.

Education

Teynampet houses two of Chennai's well known women's colleges, Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College (more commonly known as SIET) and Stella Maris College. The schools in and around Teynampet include SIET Boys and Girls School, DAV Girls and D.A.V Boys School in Gopalapuram, Sri Sarada Matriculation School in Gopalapuram, National Public School (N.P.S) in Gopalapuram and Church Park Convent.

Economy

Teynampet is a fastest growing retail hub. [8] Prestige Polygon is home to Microsoft Corporation.

Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, often referred to by his initials MKS is an Indian politician serving as the 8th and current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The son of the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Stalin has been the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party since 28 August 2018. He served as the 37th Mayor of Chennai from 1996 to 2002 and 1st Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 2009 to 2011. Stalin was placed 30th on the list of India's Most powerful Personalities in 2019 by The Indian Express.

Thoothukudi is a port city, a municipal corporation and an industrial city in Thoothukudi district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city lies in the Coromandel Coast of Bay of Bengal. T. Nagar Neighborhood of Chennai, India

Thyagaraya Nagar, commonly known as T. Nagar, is a very affluent commercial and residential neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is surrounded by Nungambakkam in the North, Teynampet in the East, Nandanam in the South-East, C.I.T. Nagar in the South and West Mambalam and Kodambakkam in the West. The stretch between Duraiswamy Road and T. Nagar Bus Stand has some of the costliest real estates in Chennai. It was constructed between 1923 and 1925 by the Madras Presidency government of the Raja of Panagal as a part of town planning activities initiated according to the Madras Town Planning Act of 1920. The town was named after P. Thyagaraya Chetty. The streets, parks and localities in the new neighbourhood were named after important officials in the provincial government.

Gopalapuram is a prime residential locality in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is surrounded by Royapettah in the North and East, Mylapore in the South-East, Teynampet in the South and Thousand Lights in the West. It is located 17 km (11 mi) from the Chennai International Airport and 3 km (1.9 mi) from Chennai Central railway station. It is located in between Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai and Anna Salai. Avvai Shanmugam Road passes through Gopalapuram, dividing it into North Gopalapuram and South Gopalapuram. Gopalapuram comes under Chennai Central Lok Sabha constituency.

Vaikom Narayani Janaki, also known as Janaki Ramachandran, was an Indian politician, actress and activist who served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for 23 days after the death of her husband M. G. Ramachandran, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu. She was the first woman to become the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Egmore is a neighbourhood of Chennai, India. Situated on the northern banks of the Coovum River, Egmore is an important residential area as well as a commercial and transportation hub. Anna Salai Arterial road in Chennai, India

Anna Salai, formerly known as St. Thomas Mount Road or simply Mount Road, is an arterial road in Chennai, India. It starts at the Cooum Creek, south of Fort St George, leading in a south-westerly direction towards St. Thomas Mount, and ends at the Kathipara Junction in Guindy. Beyond the Kathipara Junction, a branch road arises traversing westwards to Poonamallee to form the Mount-Poonamallee Road while the main branch continuing southwards to Chennai Airport, Tambaram and beyond to form Grand Southern Trunk Road. Anna Salai, which is more than 400 years old, is acknowledged as the most important road in Chennai city. The head offices of many commercial enterprises and public buildings are located along Anna Salai. It is the second longest road in Chennai, after EVR Periyar Salai.

J. Jayalalithaa Indian actress, politician and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (1948–2016)

Jayaram Jayalalithaa was an Indian politician and actress who served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for more than fourteen years over six terms between 1991 and 2016. From 9 February 1989 to 5 December 2016, she was the 5th and longest serving general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a Dravidian party whose cadre revered her as their "Amma" (Mother) and "Puratchi Thalaivi". Her critics in the media and the opposition accused her of fostering a personality cult and of demanding absolute loyalty from AIADMK legislators and ministers, who often publicly prostrated themselves before her.

Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital Hospital in Tamil Nadu, India

Tamil Nadu Government Multi-Super-Speciality Hospital is a 400-bed government-owned super-speciality hospital in Chennai, India. It is located at the Omandurar Government Estate on Anna Salai and was opened in February 2014. Originally built as Tamil Nadu legislative assembly and secretariat complex in 2010 to house the assembly hall, secretariat and offices of the chief minister and cabinet ministers, the complex was later converted into a super-speciality hospital. It was built in 1.93 million sq ft. at a total cost of ₹ 4,250 million in 2010.

CMBT Metro, officially known as Puratchi Thalaivi Dr. J. Jayalalithaa CMBT Metro, is an elevated metro station on the Line 2 of the Chennai Metro, which is currently under operation. The station is among the elevated stations coming up along corridor II of the Chennai Metro, Chennai Central – St. Thomas Mount stretch. The station will chiefly serve the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus. On 31 July 2020, It has been named by Government of Tamil Nadu as Puratchi Thalaivi Dr. J. Jayalalithaa CMBT Metro to honor the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa, who inaugurated the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.R Bus Terminus, Asia's biggest bus terminus and the metro station.

Thiru Vi Ka Salai, or the Thiru Vi Ka High Road, is one of the main streets in the downtown region of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Running from north to south, the street branches off of the arterial Anna Salai north of the LIC Building and ends at Luz Corner in Mylapore, continuing as the Ramakrishna Mutt Road. The street connects the neighbourhoods of Royapettah, Mylapore and Gopalapuram. The street includes three individual stretches formerly known as General Patters Road, Westcott Road and Royapettah High Road, respectively. The longest stretch, formerly known as the Royapettah High Road, runs to a length of 1.17 km (0.73 mi). The presence of numerous automobile dealers on the northern end of the street resulted in Chennai coming to be known as The Detroit of India.
