History

The lake had been used as a source of drinking water in the region since the 1930s, when the reservoir was constructed. [2] Till the 1950s, the reservoir was treated through a filtration unit and supplied as drinking water. From the 1950s, the reservoir began to get polluted due to mixing with oil waste and later by linking stormwater drain from the Villivakkam area, and drinking water supply was discontinued. [2] In 2017, the ICF conducted surveys and renovated the lake at a cost of 10 million [3] by removing sludge using dredgers, introducing new fish varieties, and building walking track around the lake. [4]

The lake

The lake measures 450 meters in length, 270 meters in width, and is 7 meters deep. Seven infiltration wells have been sunk on the lake bed. [1] The pathway around the lake measures 3 kilometers. [5]

The future

The ICF has planned to build a greenhouse, covering 15,000 square feet, at a cost of 7.5 million. It will have four chambers housing herbal, flower, ornamental, and indoor plants. [3]

Water scarcity in India is an ongoing water crisis that affects nearly hundreds of million of people each year. In addition to affecting the huge rural and urban population, the water scarcity in India also extensively affects the ecosystem and agriculture. India has only 4% of the world’s fresh water resources despite a population of over 1.38 billion people. In addition to the disproportionate availability of freshwater, water scarcity in India also results from drying up of rivers and their reservoirs in the summer months, right before the onset of the monsoons throughout the country. The crisis has especially worsened in the recent years due to climate change which results in delayed monsoons, consequently drying out reservoirs in several regions. Other factors attributed to the shortage of water in India are a lack of proper infrastructure and government oversight and unchecked water pollution.
