It is considered the flagship event of FIBA.

It was held in Spain between 3 September and 16 September 2007. Sixteen national teams entered the event under the auspices of FIBA Europe, the sport's regional governing body. The cities of Alicante, Granada, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, and Seville hosted the tournament. Russia won its first EuroBasket title since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, by defeating hosts Spain, with a 60–59 score in the final. Russia's Andrei Kirilenko was voted the tournament's MVP.

They were classified as the official men's basketball event of the 1986 Goodwill Games, held simultaneously in Moscow. This was the final tournament for West Germany, which did not participate in the next tournament prior to its unification with East Germany.

Beirut, Lebanon was supposed to host the tournament but the hosting rights was given to the Philippines citing the Syrian Civil War and security concerns in the Middle East in general. The 2017 FIBA Under-16 Asian Championship was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Asia at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup. The tournament was held in Foshan, China from 2 to 8 April 2018. The competition was scheduled to be played in Dalang, China from 26 March to 1 April 2018. The top four teams would represent FIBA Asia to the 2018 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.
The 1989 ABC Under-18 Championship was the tenth edition of the Asian basketball championship for junior women. The tournament took place in Manila, Philippines from January 24 to February 1, 1989. This competition served as a qualifying tournament for 1989 FIBA Under-19 World Championship for Women.
