The 16th Metro Manila Film Festival was held in 1990. There are six official entries of the Festival which includes the return of Shake, Rattle & Roll film series.
MRN Film International's Andrea, Paano Ba ang Maging Isang Ina? topped the 1990 Metro Manila Film Festival with eleven awards including the Best Picture, Best Actress for Nora Aunor and Best Director for Gil Portes among others. Other awardees include Dolphy for Best Actor and his son, Vandolph Quizon won the Best Child Performer tied with the Guila Alvarez.
This year's festival also added two new categories namely Best Visual Effects and Best Make-up in which Shake, Rattle & Roll II received both of the awards. It also introduces the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Awards category for the first time, received by Andrea, Paano Ba ang Maging Isang Ina? . [1] [2]

The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) is an annual film festival organized by the Metro Manila Development Authority and held nationwide in the Philippines. The festival, which runs from Christmas Day through New Year's Day and into first weekend of January in the following year, focuses on Filipino produced films. During the course of the festival, movie theaters show only films that are approved by its jurors and exclude foreign films except in 3D theaters and IMAX theaters. It is one of the two Filipino major film festivals to exclude foreign films in a week-long period, the other being the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino happening during August.
Shake, Rattle & Roll (SRR) is a Filipino horror anthology film series produced by Regal Entertainment, and formerly Athena Productions. It is the longest-running film series in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. All films of the series were official entries for the Metro Manila Film Festival, with the exception of the sixth and sixteenth installment, which premiered in January 1997 and November 2023 respectively. The title is based on the song of the same name.
Maurice Gallaga, better known as Peque Gallaga, was a multi-awarded Filipino film-maker. His most significant achievement in film was Oro, Plata, Mata, which he directed after winning a scriptwriting contest sponsored by the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines.
