The 23rd Metro Manila Film Festival was held in 1997.
MaQ Productions' Nasaan ang Puso won the most awards at the festival with ten, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Maricel Soriano, Best Actor for Christopher de Leon and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Awards among others. Viva Films and Neo Films' Magic Kingdom followed with six awards including the Best Float and the Third Best Picture Award. Meanwhile, the Second Best Picture, Gem's Babae got four awards. The festival also showcased the first Filipino full-length animated film Adarna: The Mythical Bird . [1]

Mano Po is a Filipino drama anthology film series produced by Regal Entertainment, and is one of the most successful film series produced in the history of Philippine cinema, and the second longest-running Filipino film series, the first being Shake, Rattle & Roll which had a total of 16 films with three episodes each. The series has seven productions and also includes Ako Legal Wife and Bahay Kubo: A Pinoy Mano Po!. All episodes are directed by Joel Lamangan, with the exception of Mano Po 2: My Home (2003) which was helmed by Erik Matti, and Mano Po 7: Chinoy (2016) which was helmed by Ian Loreños. The series focuses on the ways and traditions of the Chinese Filipino community.

She went on to perform several roles in the 1970s, gaining her first acting award at the 9th Manila Tagalog Film Festival as "Best Child Actress" for her role in Alaala Mo, Daigdig Ko (1973) and the longest running Philippine sitcom John en Marsha (1973-1991), where she played the role of Shirley Puruntong. A supporting role in the film Yakuza Contract (1978) proved to be a breakthrough for Soriano; she received her first FAMAS Award nomination for it at age 14. In 1980, she was introduced as one of the first Regal Babies and launched a loveteam tandem with William Martinez the following year. They appeared in several movies together including Galawgaw (1982), Summer Holiday (1982), To Mama With Love (1983), Teenage Marriage (1984), Anak ni Waray, Anak ni Biday (1984), and Inday Bote (1985).
