Amy Austria and Jomari Yllana won top honors in the 1996 Metro Manila Film Festival for winning the Best Actress and Best Actor Award respectively. Star Cinema's Magic Temple walked away most of the awards, fourteen in total including the Best Picture, and Best Director, Best Story and Best Screenplay for Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes. The film also receives the Best Float and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Awards. [1]

During the course of the festival, movie theaters show only films that are approved by its jurors and exclude foreign films except in 3D theaters and IMAX theaters. It is one of the two Filipino major film festivals to exclude foreign films in a week-long period, the other being the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino happening during August.

Magic Temple is a 1996 Filipino family fantasy adventure film directed by the acclaimed director Peque Gallaga and his directing partner Lore Reyes from their screenplay that is based on a story written and developed by Gallaga, Reyes, and Erik Matti. The film stars Jason Salcedo, Junell Hernando, and Marc Solis as the trio of young boys sent by their master to face the evil forces who try to destroy the world. It also stars Jackie Lou Blanco as Ravenal, the film's antagonist, Jun Urbano as Sifu, the trio's master, and Anna Larrucea as Yasmin.

The Metro Manila Film Festival Award for Best Picture is an award presented annually by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). It was first awarded at the 1st Metro Manila Film Festival ceremony, held in 1975; the film Diligin Mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa starring Joseph Estrada received the award and it is given in honor of the film that has delivered an outstanding creation of the film, including directing, acting, music composing, writing, editing and other efforts put forth into a film. The category was first named "Best Film" before changing it to "Best Picture" in 2007. Currently, nominees and winners are determined by Executive Committees, headed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman and key members of the film industry.
