Group C of the 2002 FIFA World Cup took place between 3 and 13 June 2002. Eventual champions Brazil won the group and advanced to the second round, along with Turkey. Costa Rica was level with Turkey on points, but had an inferior goal difference, while China finished bottom of the group, having lost all three of their matches without scoring a goal.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup, also branded as Korea/Japan 2002, was the 17th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial football world championship for men's national teams organized by FIFA. It was held from 31 May to 30 June 2002 at sites in South Korea and Japan, with its final match hosted by Japan at International Stadium in Yokohama. During the opening ceremony, the championship was declared opened by President of South Korea Kim Dae-jung.

An association football tournament was played as part of the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea, featuring 16 men's national teams from six continental confederations. The teams were drawn into four groups of four with each group playing a round-robin tournament. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams advanced to the knockout stage, beginning with the quarter-finals and culminating with the gold medal match at the Seoul Olympic Stadium on 1 October 1988.

Group A was one of eight groups at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. It consisted of defending champions France, two-time winners Uruguay, Denmark and debutants Senegal. The group's first match was played on 31 May 2002 and the last on 11 June 2002.

Group D of the 2002 FIFA World Cup took place on 14 June 2002. South Korea won the group, and advanced to the second round, along with the United States. Portugal and Poland failed to advance.

Group G of the 2002 FIFA World Cup took place on 13 June 2002. Mexico won the group, and advanced to the second round, along with Italy. Croatia and Ecuador failed to advance.

Group H of the 2002 FIFA World Cup took place from 4 June 2002 to 14 June 2002. Japan won the group and advanced to the round of 16, along with Belgium. Russia and Tunisia failed to advance.

At the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the knockout stage was the second and final stage of the tournament, following the group stage. The top two teams from each group advanced to the knockout stage to compete in a single-elimination tournament. A third place match was also played between the two losing semi-finalists.

China first entered World Cup qualification in 1957 in an attempt to qualify for the 1958 FIFA World Cup and has made its first appearance in 2002. Despite a respectable performance against Costa Rica, they lost all of their games without scoring a goal with a goal difference of 0-9.

In the CONCACAF fourth round of qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the United States, Costa Rica, and Honduras finished in the top three places and qualified directly for the 2014 World Cup. Mexico finished in fourth place and defeated New Zealand in the CONCACAF – OFC play-off to gain a spot in the World Cup. Mexico finished in fourth place ahead of Panama after the United States scored two goals against Panama in stoppage time in the final match of qualifying; had Panama retained its 2–1 lead, they would have finished in fourth place and eliminated Mexico on goals scored, who had qualified for the previous five World Cups.
