The 2003 European 10,000m Cup was the 7th edition of the annual 10,000 metres competition between European athletes, which was held at Agios Kosmas Stadium in Athens, Greece on 12 April. A total of 66 athletes (36 men and 30 women) from 17 European nations entered the competition, plus three Kenyan pacemakers running as guests.
Portugal won both the men's and women's team events with combined times of 1:24:43.85 and 1:36:27.97 hours, led by men's individual runner-up Eduardo Henriques and women's individual winner Fernanda Ribeiro. Ismaïl Sghyr of France won the men's individual race in 27:45.14 minutes.

World Athletics Cross Country Championships is the most important competition in international cross country running. Formerly held annually and organised by World Athletics, it was inaugurated in 1973, when it replaced the International Cross Country Championships. It was an annual competition until 2011, when World Athletics changed it to a biennial event.
The 1997 IAAF World Cross Country Championships took place on 23 March 1997. The races were held at the Parco del Valentino in Torino, Italy. A report of the event was given in The New York Times, in the Herald, and for the IAAF.
Germany was represented at the 1956 Summer Olympics by a United Team of Germany of athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and, for the first time at Summer Games, also from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) which had not joined in 1952. Also, the Saarland athletes who had to enter as a separate team in 1952 could now join in even though the accession of their state was not yet in effect. Thus, this was the only Olympic team ever to comprise athletes from three German states.

The African Marathon Championships was a biennial marathon running competition between athletes from Africa. A short-lived event, it was first staged in 1994 and held for a second and final time in 1996. The inaugural event was held on 4 December in Abidjan, Ivory Coast and the ultimate event on 1 December in Soweto, South Africa. The 1996 race was incorporated into the Soweto Marathon.
