The 2022 European Marathon Cup was the 12th edition of the European Marathon Cup of athletics and were held in Munich, Germany on 15 August 2022, inside of the 2022 European Championships

The total time is calculated on the sum of the times of the first three athletes arrived at the finish line, but the medals are awarded to all the athletes who have concluded the race. [1]

Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics were held during the last ten days of the Games. They were due to be held from 31 July – 9 August 2020, at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the games were postponed to 2021, with the track and field events set for 30 July – 8 August. Bashir Abdi is a Somali-born Belgian athlete who specializes in long-distance running. He won bronze medals in the marathon at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the marathon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene. In doing so, Abdi became both the first ever Belgian world championship medal winner at the marathon and the first Belgian male athlete to win an individual medal at both the Olympic Games and the Athletics World Championships. Abdi was also the silver medalist at the 2018 European Championships in the 10,000 metres event. He is the current European record holder in the marathon, holds the other European best and two other Belgian records.

The African Marathon Championships was a biennial marathon running competition between athletes from Africa. A short-lived event, it was first staged in 1994 and held for a second and final time in 1996. The inaugural event was held on 4 December in Abidjan, Ivory Coast and the ultimate event on 1 December in Soweto, South Africa. The 1996 race was incorporated into the Soweto Marathon.

The 2014 European Marathon Cup was the 10th edition of the quadrennial team marathon competition between European countries, which was held in Zürich, Switzerland on 16–17 August. The start and finish points were located on Bürkliplatz, and the route was set along a 10-kilometer circuit on the city streets. It was held in conjunction with the men's and women's individual marathon races at the 2014 European Athletics Championships.
