Prior to the draw, the June 26 match was designated by the Seattle host-city organizing committee as their official "Pride Match" of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The designation is part of a local initiative by the City of Seattle to coincide with the city's annual Pride celebrations and to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion. [11] Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj described the designation as an "irrational move that supports a certain group"; the Egyptian Football Association sent a letter to FIFA secretary-general Mattias Grafström to rescind the match's designation. [12] [13] The local organizing committee plans to move ahead with their original plans to host events for the Pride Match outside of Lumen Field. [14]
