4672 Takuboku, provisional designation 1988 HB, is a background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 17 April 1988, by Japanese astronomers Seiji Ueda and Hiroshi Kaneda at the Kushiro Observatory on Hokkaido, Japan. The asteroid was named after the Japanese poet Takuboku Ishikawa. [1] In 2005, measurement of the body's occultation ellipse also gave 35.0 × 35.0 kilometers. [4]
Takuboku is a non-family asteroid from the main belt's background population. [3] It orbits the Sun in the outer main-belt at a distance of 3.0–3.3 AU once every 5 years and 8 months (2,078 days; semi-major axis of 3.19 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.05 and an inclination of 16° with respect to the ecliptic. [2]
The body's observation arc begins with its first observation as 1971 HT at Crimea–Nauchnij in April 1971, or 17 years prior to its official discovery observation at Kushiro. [1]
Takuboku has an absolute magnitude of between 10.90 and 11.4. As of 2018, no rotational lightcurve of Takuboku has been obtained from photometric observations. The body's rotation period, pole and shape remain unknown. [2]
According to the surveys carried out by the NEOWISE mission of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the Infrared Astronomical Satellite IRAS, Takuboku measures 28.115 and 35.59 kilometers in diameter and its surface has an albedo of 0.108 and 0.0609, respectively. [5] [6]
On 13 June 2005, Takuboku occulted 9.3 magnitude star TYC 0312-00789-1, causing a predicted magnitude drop 6.8 during 4.3 seconds. The occultation was visible over the southern island of New Zealand only. Measurement of the asteroid's occultation dimensions 35.0 ×35.0 for its major and minor best-fit ellipse (the fit's quality code is 1). [4] [lower-alpha 1]
This minor planet was named after Japanese poet Takuboku Ishikawa (1886–1912) who lived in Japan's late Meiji-era. He is best known for Ichiaku no Suna (A Handful of Sand) a collection of 551 tanka poems published in 1910. [1] The official naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 10 November 1992 ( M.P.C. 21131). [7]
96 Aegle is a carbonaceous asteroid and the namesake of the Aegle family located in the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 170 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 17 February 1868, by French astronomer Jérôme Coggia at the Marseille Observatory in southeastern France. The rare T-type asteroid has a rotation period of 13.8 hours and has been observed several times during occultation events. It was named after Aegle ("brightness"), one of the Hesperides from Greek mythology.
659 Nestor is a dark Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 110 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 23 March 1908, by German astronomer Max Wolf at Heidelberg Observatory in southern Germany, and named after King Nestor from Greek mythology. The carbonaceous Jovian asteroid belongs to the 20 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 15.98 hours.
751 Faïna is a very large background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 110 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 28 April 1913, by Russian astronomer Grigory Neujmin at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. The elongated C-type asteroid (Ch) has a rotation period of 23.7 hours. It was named after Faina Mikhajlovna Neujmina, colleague and first wife of the discoverer.
759 Vinifera is a large background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 50 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 26 August 1913, by German astronomer Franz Kaiser at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The dark X-type asteroid has a rotation period of 14.2 hours and a heavily elongated shape. It was named after the plant species vitis vinifera, also known as the common grape vine.
834 Burnhamia is a large background asteroid, approximately 61 kilometers in diameter, that is located in the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 20 September 1916, by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg Observatory in southwest Germany. The X-type asteroid (GS) has a rotation period of 13.9 hours. It was named after American astronomer Sherburne Wesley Burnham (1838–1921).
868 Lova is a large and dark background asteroid, approximately 51 kilometers in diameter, from the central regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 26 April 1917. The carbonaceous C-type asteroid (Ch) and has a long rotation period of 41.1 hours and is likely elongated in shape. The origin of the asteroid's name remains unknown.
910 Anneliese is a dark background asteroid, approximately 48 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 1 March 1919, by astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The carbonaceous C-type asteroid (Ch) has a rotation period of 11.3 hours and is likely spherical in shape. It was named by German astronomer Julius Dick after his friend "Anneliese".
917 Lyka is a background asteroid, approximately 32 kilometers in diameter, located in the inner region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 5 September 1915, by Russian astronomer Grigory Neujmin at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. The X-type asteroid has a rotation period of 7.9 hours and is likely spherical in shape. It was named after Lyka, a friend of the discoverer's sister.
927 Ratisbona is a large and dark background asteroid, approximately 76 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer region of the asteroid belt. 930 Westphalia is a very dark background asteroid and a slow rotator from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, that measures approximately 36 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 10 March 1920, by German astronomer Walter Baade at the Bergedorf Observatory in Hamburg. The carbonaceous C-type asteroid (Ch) has an exceptionally long rotation period of 100.7 hours and is likely spherical in shape. It was named after Westphalia, a region in northwestern Germany.
931 Whittemora is a metallic background asteroid, approximately 46 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by French astronomer François Gonnessiat at the Algiers Observatory in North Africa on 19 March 1920. The M-type asteroid has a rotation period of 19.2 hours. It was named after American archaeologist Thomas Whittemore (1871–1950).
976 Benjamina is a dark background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 81 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 27 March 1922, by Russian-French astronomer Benjamin Jekhowsky at the Algiers Observatory in North Africa. The large X/D-type asteroid has a rotation period of 9.7 hours and is likely regular in shape. It was named after the discoverer's son.
1143 Odysseus, provisional designation 1930 BH, is a large Jupiter trojan located in the Greek camp of Jupiter's orbit. It was discovered on 28 January 1930, by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory in southwest Germany, and later named after Odysseus, the legendary hero from Greek mythology. The dark D-type asteroid has a rotation period of 10.1 hours. With a diameter of approximately 125 kilometers, it is among the 10 largest Jovian trojans.
1032 Pafuri, provisional designation 1924 SA, is a dark background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 65 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 30 May 1924, by English astronomer Harry Edwin Wood at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg, South Africa. The asteroid was named for the river in the Pafuri Triangle in South Africa, created by the confluence of the Limpopo and Levubu rivers. The body's spectral type and rotation period are still poorly determined.
1043 Beate, provisional designation 1925 HB, is a stony asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 32 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 22 April 1925. Any reference of its name to a person is unknown.
1048 Feodosia, provisional designation 1924 TP, is a carbonaceous asteroid from the middle region of the asteroid belt, approximately 70 kilometers in diameter.
1909 Alekhin, provisional designation 1972 RW2, is a stony asteroid and slow rotator from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 17 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 September 1972, by Russian–Ukrainian astronomer Lyudmila Zhuravleva at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, Nauchnyj, on the Crimean peninsula, and named after chess grandmaster and World Chess Champion Alexander Alekhine.
3915 Fukushima, provisional designation 1988 PA1, is a carbonaceous asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 21 kilometers in diameter.
3345 Tarkovskij, provisional designation 1982 YC1, is a carbonaceous background asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 22 kilometers (14 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 23 December 1982, by Russian astronomer Lyudmila Karachkina at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyj, on the Crimean peninsula, and named after filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. The C-type asteroid is a slow rotator with a rotation period of 187 hours.
5176 Yoichi, provisional designation 1989 AU, is a background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 17 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 January 1989, by Japanese astronomers Seiji Ueda and Hiroshi Kaneda at the Kushiro Observatory on Hokkaido, Japan. The likely elongated asteroid has a brightness variation of 0.45 magnitude, and occulted a star in the constellation Cetus in November 2014. It was named for the Japanese town of Yoichi.
