83 Leonis, abbreviated 83 Leo, is a binary star system approximately 59 light-years away in the constellation of Leo (the Lion). The primary star of the system is a cool orange subgiant star, while the secondary star is an orange dwarf star. The two stars are separated by at least 515 astronomical units from each other. Both stars are presumed to be cooler than the Sun.
The primary star is also known as HD 99491 and the secondary star as HD 99492. In 2005, an exoplanet was confirmed to be orbiting the secondary star within the system. [12]
The primary component, 83 Leonis A, is a 6th magnitude star. It is not visible to the unaided eye, but easily visible with small binoculars. The star is classified as a subgiant, meaning that it has ceased fusing hydrogen in its core and started to evolve towards red gianthood.
The secondary component, 83 Leonis B, is an 8th magnitude orange dwarf, somewhat less massive (0.88 MSun), smaller and cooler than the Sun. [13] It is visible only with binoculars or better equipment. Components A and B share common proper motion, which confirms them as a physical pair. The projected separation between the stars is 515 AU, but the true separation may be much higher. [14]
There is yet another, magnitude 14.4 component listed in the Washington Double Star Catalog. However, this star is moving into a different direction and is therefore not a true member of the 83 Leonis system.
Planet 83 Leonis Bb was discovered in Jan 2005 by the California and Carnegie Planet Search team, who use the radial velocity method to detect planets. The planet's minimum mass is less than half of the mass of Saturn. It orbits very close to the star, completing one orbit in about 17 days. [12]
In 2010, a second planet, 83 Leonis Bc, was claimed, [5] but was found to be a false positive in 2016. [3] However, in 2023 a different second planet was discovered, also given the designation "c". [10]

HD 88133 is a yellow star with an orbiting exoplanet in the equatorial constellation of Leo. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 8.01, which is too faint to be visible to the naked eye. With a small telescope it should be easily visible. The distance to this system, as measured through parallax, is 240 light years, but it is slowly drifting closer with a radial velocity of −3.6 km/s.
HD 114729 is a Sun-like star with an orbiting exoplanet in the southern constellation of Centaurus. Based on parallax measurements, it is located at a distance of 124 light years from the Sun. It is near the lower limit of visibility to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 6.68 The system is drifting further away with a heliocentric radial velocity of 26.3 km/s. The system has a relatively high proper motion, traversing the celestial sphere at an angular rate of 0.373″·yr−1.
HD 114783 is a star with two exoplanetary companions in the equatorial constellation of Virgo. With an apparent visual magnitude of 7.56 it is too faint to be visible with the unaided eye, but is an easy target for binoculars. Based on parallax measurements, it is located at a distance of 68.6 light-years from the Sun, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −12 km/s.
HD 20367 is a star in the constellation of Aries, close to the border with the Perseus constellation. It is a yellow-white hued star that is a challenge to view with the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 6.40. Based upon parallax measurements, it is located 85 light years from the Sun. It is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +6.5 km/s. Based upon its movement through space, it is a candidate member of the Ursa Major Moving Group of co-moving stars that probably share a common origin.
HD 177830 is a 7th magnitude binary star system located approximately 205 light-years away in the constellation of Lyra. The primary star is slightly more massive than the Sun, but cooler being a type K star. Therefore, it is a subgiant clearly more evolved than the Sun. In visual light it is four times brighter than the Sun, but because of its distance, about 204 light years, it is not visible to the unaided eye. With binoculars it should be easily visible.
HD 38529 is a binary star approximately 138 light-years away in the constellation of Orion.
HD 142 is a wide binary star system in the southern constellation of Phoenix. The main component has a yellow-white hue and is dimly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.7. The system is located at a distance of 85.5 light years from the Sun based on parallax measurements, and is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +6 km/s.
HD 125612 is a binary star system with three exoplanetary companions in the equatorial constellation of Virgo. It is too dim to be visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 8.31. The system is located at a distance of 188 light years from the Sun based on parallax measurements, but it is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −18 km/s.
HD 136118 is a star in the Serpens Caput section of the Serpens constellation. The star is too dim to be readily visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 6.93. It is located at a distance of 165 light years from the Sun based on parallax, and is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −3 km/s.
HD 4113 is a dual star system in the southern constellation of Sculptor. It is too faint to be viewed with the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 7.88. The distance to this star, as estimated by parallax measurements, is 137 light years. It is receding away from the Sun with a radial velocity of +5 km/s.
HD 117207 is a star in the southern constellation Centaurus. With an apparent visual magnitude of 7.24, it is too dim to be visible to the naked eye but can be seen with a small telescope. Based upon parallax measurements, it is located at a distance of 105.4 light-years from the Sun. The star is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −17.4 km/s. It has an absolute magnitude of 4.67.
HD 142022 is a binary star system located in the southernmost constellation of Octans. It is too faint to be visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 7.70. The distance to this system is 112 light-years based on parallax, but it is drifting closer to the Sun with a radial velocity of −10 km/s.
HD 190228 is a star with a substellar companion in the constellation Vulpecula. Its apparent magnitude is 7.30 – too faint to be seen with the naked eye – and the absolute magnitude is 3.34. Based on parallax measurements, it is located at a distance of 205 light-years from the Sun. The star is older than the Sun with an age over 5 billion years and it is metal-poor.
HD 126614 is a trinary star system in the equatorial constellation of Virgo. The primary member, designated component A, is host to an exoplanetary companion. With an apparent visual magnitude of 8.81, it is too faint to be seen with the naked eye. The system is located at a distance of 239 light years from the Sun based on parallax measurements, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −33 km/s.
HD 129445 is a G-type star found in the Circinus constellation located 219 light-years away from the Sun based on parallax. It is invisible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 8.80. The star was observed by the Magellan Planet Search Program due to its absolute visual magnitude and high metallicity. The Magellan program conducted 17 doppler velocity measurements, which spans a full orbital period. The results led the program to detect a planet dubbed HD 129445 b. In 2023, the inclination and true mass of HD 129445 b were determined via astrometry.

HD 193307 is the primary of a binary star located the southern constellation Telescopium. It has an apparent magnitude of 6.27, placing it near the limit for naked eye visibility, even under ideal conditions. The star is located relatively close at a distance of 102 light years based on Gaia DR3 parallax measurements, but it is receding with a heliocentric radial velocity of 16.9 km/s. At its current distance, HD 193307's brightness is diminished by 0.18 magnitudes due to extinction from interstellar dust and it has an absolute magnitude of +3.80. HD 193307 has a relatively high proper motion, moving at a rate of 437 mas/yr.
