885 Ulrike (prov. designation: A917 SVor1917 CX) is an elongated Themistian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 23 September 1917, by Soviet astronomer Sergey Belyavsky at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. [1] The presumed C-type asteroid has a short rotation period of 4.9 hours and measures approximately 33 kilometers (21 miles) in diameter. It was likely named after Ulrike von Levetzow, last love of Goethe. [2]
When applying the synthetic hierarchical clustering method (HCM) by Zappalà, Milani and Knežević (AstDys), Ulrike is a core member of the Themis family ( 602 ), a large asteroid family of carbonaceous asteroids named after 24 Themis. However, according to another HCM-analysis by Nesvorný, it is a background asteroid. [4] [5] [12] : 23 It orbits the Sun in the outer main-belt at a distance of 2.5–3.7 AU once every 5 years and 5 months (1,992 days; semi-major axis of 3.1 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.19 and an inclination of 3° with respect to the ecliptic. [3] The asteroid was first observed at Lowell Observatory in August 1906. The body's observation arc begins at Heidelberg Observatory on 27 September 1906, more than a decade prior to its official discovery observation at Simeiz. [1]
This minor planet was allegedly named after Ulrike von Levetzow (1804–1899), a friend and last love of the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who met Ulrike during summertime 1821–1823 in Marienbad, Bohemia. [2] After she declined to marry him, Goethe started writing Marienbad Elegy, one of his finest poems. Lutz Schmadel, the author of the Dictionary of Minor Planet Names, considers this interpretation the most likely because the discoverer, who studied at Göttingen University, was an expert in German literature. [2]
Ulrike' spectral type is unknown. It is an assumed carbonaceous C-type asteroid, [9] which agrees with the overall spectral type assigned to members of the Themis family. [12] : 23
In September 2010, a rotational lightcurve of Ulrike was obtained from photometric observations by John Menke at the Menke Observatory. Lightcurve analysis gave a rotation period of 4.90±0.05 hours with a high brightness variation of 0.55±0.05 magnitude, indicative of an elongated shape ( U=3 ). [9] [10] An alternative period determination of 4.9268±0.0002 hours with an even higher amplitude of 0.72±0.12 was made by Laurent Bernasconi one month later in October 2010 ( U=2 ). [13] A modeled lightcurve using photometric data from the Lowell Photometric Database gave a sidereal period of 4.906164±0.000001 and two spin axes at (13.0°, −64.0°) and (207.0°, −60.0°) in ecliptic coordinates (λ, β). [11]
According to the survey carried out by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite IRAS, the Japanese Akari satellite, and the NEOWISE mission of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), Ulrike measures (30.537±0.756), (33.43±5.3) and (44.69±1.06) kilometers in diameter and its surface has an albedo of (0.109±0.025), (0.083±0.034) and (0.047±0.003), respectively. [6] [7] [8] The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link adopts the results from IRAS, that is an albedo of 0.083 and a diameter of 33.43 kilometers based on an absolute magnitude of 10.7. [9] The WISE team also published an alternative mean-diameter of (42.20±14.76 km) with an albedo of (0.08±0.06). [4] [9]
862 Franzia is a stony background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 28 January 1917. The common S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 7.5 hours and measures approximately 28 kilometers in diameter. It was named after the discoverer's son, Franz Wolf.
865 Zubaida is an elongated, stony background asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 15 February 1917, by astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg Observatory in southwest Germany, and given the provisional designations A917 CH and 1917 BO. The uncommon L-type asteroid has a rotation period of 11.4 hours and measures approximately 17 kilometers in diameter. It was named after Zobeide, a character in the opera Abu Hassan by Carl Maria von Weber (1786–1826).
866 Fatme is a large background asteroid, approximately 86 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 25 February 1917. The X-type asteroid has a short rotation period of 5.8 hours. It was named after "Fatme", a character in the opera Abu Hassan by Carl Maria von Weber (1786–1826).
868 Lova is a large and dark background asteroid, approximately 51 kilometers in diameter, from the central regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 26 April 1917. The carbonaceous C-type asteroid (Ch) and has a long rotation period of 41.1 hours and is likely elongated in shape. The origin of the asteroid's name remains unknown.
874 Rotraut is a dark and elongated background asteroid, approximately 58 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 25 May 1917, by astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory is southwest Germany. The hydrated carbonaceous C-type asteroid (Ch) has a rotation period of 14.3 hours. It was likely named after the ballad Schön Rotraut by German lyric poet Eduard Mörike (1804–1875).
882 Swetlana is a dark background asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 15 August 1917, by Russian astronomer Grigory Neujmin at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. The X-type asteroid has a longer-than average rotation period of 29.9 hours and measures approximately 42 kilometers in diameter. The origin of the asteroid's name remains unknown.
931 Whittemora is a metallic background asteroid, approximately 46 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by French astronomer François Gonnessiat at the Algiers Observatory in North Africa on 19 March 1920. The M-type asteroid has a rotation period of 19.2 hours. It was named after American archaeologist Thomas Whittemore (1871–1950).
946 Poësia is a Themis asteroid and slow rotator, approximately 39 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 11 February 1921 and given the provisional designations A921 CD and 1921 JC. The F-type asteroid has a long rotation period of 108.5 hours. It was named after the goddess of poetry.
981 Martina is a carbonaceous Themistian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 31 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 23 September 1917, by Russian astronomer Sergey Belyavsky at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. The C/B-type asteroid has a rotation period of 11.3 hours. It was named after French historian and revolutionary Henri Martin (1810–1883).
1764 Cogshall, provisional designation 1953 VM1, is a carbonaceous Themistian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 26 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 7 November 1953, by astronomers of the Indiana Asteroid Program at Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana, United States. The asteroid was named after Wilbur Cogshall, professor of astronomy at Indiana University.

It was discovered on 15 December 1957, by astronomers of the Indiana Asteroid Program at Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana, United States. The asteroid was named after Marshal Henry Wrubel, professor at Indiana University.

The asteroid was probably named after the 1893-novel Catriona by Robert Louis Stevenson.
1462 Zamenhof, provisional designation 1938 CA, is a carbonaceous Themistian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 27 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 6 February 1938, by Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at the Iso-Heikkilä Observatory in Finland. The asteroid was named after L. L. Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto. It is a recognized Zamenhof-Esperanto object.
1127 Mimi is a dark background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 13 January 1929, by Belgian astronomer Sylvain Arend at the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Uccle. The carbonaceous C-type asteroids (CX) has a rotation period of 12.7 hours and measures approximately 47 kilometers in diameter. Through a glitch in the naming process, the asteroid received the name "Mimi" instead of "Robelmonte" as originally intended by the discoverer.
3174 Alcock is a carbonaceous Themistian asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by American astronomer Edward Bowell at Lowell's U.S. Anderson Mesa Station in Flagstaff, Arizona, on 26 October 1984. The likely C-type asteroid has a rotation period of 7.1 hours and measures approximately 19 kilometers in diameter. It was named after British amateur astronomer George Alcock (1912–2000).
1815 Beethoven, provisional designation 1932 CE1, is a carbonaceous background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 27 January 1932, by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory. The uncommon F-type asteroid seems to have a long rotation period of 54 hours (tentative). It was named after Ludwig van Beethoven.

1325 Inanda, provisional designation 1934 NR, is a stony background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 11 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 14 July 1934, by South African astronomer Cyril Jackson at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg. The asteroid was named after the township of Inanda in South Africa.
2094 Magnitka (prov. designation: 1971 TC2) is a Flora asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 12 October 1971, at and by the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyj, on the Crimean peninsula. The discovery has not been attributed to an observing astronomer. It was later named for the city of Magnitogorsk.
