Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) is a government medical college located on the lap of Agartala, the capital city of Tripura. [1] It is at Kunjaban near the Malancha Niwas, home of the Manikya Dynasty in Agartala. The college is attached with the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (G.B. Pant hospital), which is the hospital of the college. It is completely run by the Government of Tripura.

History

The college was established in 2005 and the foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. The college is recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and is affiliated to Tripura University.

Seat distribution

The annual intake of students for the course of MBBS is 125, divided as follows: [3]

Admission

A candidate who has completed the age of 17 years on or before 31 December of the corresponding year is eligible for admission. Date of birth as recorded in the Madhyamik / 10th Standard / School Leaving Certificate issued by the concerned Board of Education will be taken as authentic.

Candidates must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination after a period of 12 years of study with at least 45% marks, the last two years of study consisting of Physics, Chemistry and Biology or any other elective subjects with English at a level not less than core course of English as prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training after the introduction of the 10+2+3 years educational structure as recommended by the National Committee on education. All or any such examination must be recognized by the Tripura University for the purpose of admission.

All candidates (Tripura State quota = 75 seats+all India quota = 5 + North East quota = 10) should appear in the NEET, conducted by CBSE for admission to this Medical College.

Admission in state quota will be as per the state merit list of NEET Prepared by Medical Counseling Committee constituted by the Govt. of Tripura.

Admission in all India quota (15) will be through all India common merit list of NEET.

Admission in North East quota will be through NEET Merit list of respective state and will be conducted by Medical Counselling committee of that state.

All admissions are subject to verification of the original certificates / documents produced by the candidates. Regarding the eligibility of any applicant, the decision of the Medical Counselling Committee, Govt. of Tripura and the Director of Medical Education as per the MCI guideline shall be final.

All admissions are subject to Medical Fitness of the candidate.

Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 was an Indian legislation that provided for the constitution of the Medical Council of India (MCI). The Act was repealed on 25 September 2020 and the MCI was dissolved on the same date. Prior to its dissolution, the MCI regulated standards of medical education, permission to start colleges, courses or increase the number of seats, registration of doctors, standards of professional conduct of medical practitioners. The MCI was replaced by the Nation Medical Commission.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Medical education in India</span> Medical education

The standard entry-to-practice degree in modern evidence-based medicine in India is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Alternative systems of Medicine in India are Ayurveda (BAMS), Unani (BUMS), Siddha(BSMS), Homeopathy (BHMS). M.B.B.S. a credential earned upon completion of a five-and-a-half-year undergraduate program. The curriculum is divided into one year of preclinical studies in general science subjects and three and a half years of paraclinical and clinical studies, followed by a one-year clinical internship. Before beginning the internship, students are required to pass several examinations, the final one of which is conducted in two parts. Postgraduate education in medical specialties typically takes 3 additional years of study after the MBBS and concludes with the award of a Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine(MD). Postgraduate diplomas in medical specialities may also be awarded upon the completion of two-year training programs. After that a person can further get a degree in superspeciality in his or her respective branch after successful completion of 3 years of superspeciality in a medical college.
