Azhar Mahmood SI(M) is a Rear Admiral and Flag Officer in the Pakistan Navy, presently holding the positions of Commander Central Punjab and Commandant of the Pakistan Naval War College, Lahore. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Education

Mahmood is a graduate of the Pakistan Navy War College Lahore, Defence Services Command and Staff College Bangladesh, and the National Defence University Islamabad. [6] [7]

Career

Mahmood was commissioned into the Operations Branch of the Pakistan Navy in 1993. Throughout his career, Mahmood has held various command and staff appointments. His command roles include Commanding Officer of PMSS Barkat, PMSS Kashmir, [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] PNS Tariq; Commander of the 9th Auxiliary and Mine Warfare Squadron; and Commander of the 25th Destroyer Squadron. He has also served in international capacities, as chief of staff to the Commander Combined Task Force-150 at HQ NAVCENT Bahrain, and in key positions such as Director Studies at the National Defence University Islamabad [20] [21] [22] [23] and Director of Foreign Military Collaboration at Naval Headquarters. Mahmood was the Mission Commander during the Pakistan Navy Ship ALAMGIR’s overseas deployment around Africa [26] and aligned with the Engage Africa Policy of the Government of Pakistan. [27] [28] This diplomatic mission included visit of the ship to Egypt, [29] [30] [31] [32] [33] Turkey, [34] [35] [36] [37] [38] [39] [40] [41] [42] [43] Algeria, [44] [45] [46] Senegal, [47] Nigeria, [48] [49] [50] [51] [52] Tanzania, [53] [54] and Kenya, [27] [28] [55] during which free medical camps were established. [27] [28] [47] [48] [49] [50] [53] [55] These camps, staffed by a team of senior doctors, offered free consultations and medicines to citizens of these nations, reflecting both diplomatic engagement and humanitarian efforts of Pakistan Navy. [54]

In January 2024, Mahmood headed a delegation consisting of faculty members and participants from the PN Staff Course of Pakistan Navy War College on an Inland Study Tour (IST) to Karachi. The delegation visited a range of military and civilian organizations, including the Governor House and the Chief Minister House. [3] [4] [56] [57]

The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency is a branch of the Pakistan Navy. It is a Navy-managed and Navy-controlled law enforcement agency whose mission is to provide protection to the Pakistan's maritime interests and enforcement of maritime law with jurisdiction over the domestic and international waters of Pakistan including the exclusive economic zone. Pakistan Maritime security agency should not be confused with Pakistan Coast Guards which is security force under Pakistan Army.

The Indo-Pakistani Naval War of 1971 refers to the maritime military engagements between the Indian Navy and the Pakistan Navy during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The series of naval operations began with the Indian Navy's exertion of pressure on Pakistan from the Indian Ocean, while the Indian Army and Indian Air Force moved in to choke Pakistani forces operating in East Pakistan on land. Indian naval operations comprised naval interdiction, air defence, ground support, and logistics missions.

Rear Admiral Leslie Norman MungavinSPk, SK, SBt was a two-star rank admiral in the Pakistan Navy, and a defence diplomat. He is noted for releasing his diplomatic assignment at the High Commission of Pakistan in London to command the combat assignments during the war on the Western front with India in 1971.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Pakistan Navy Western Command</span> Military unit

The Western Naval Command is a naval military command of the Pakistan Navy held by the Commander, West, a senior flag officer of Rear Admiral. COMWEST was a type commander post and now has been fully integrated to an Admin Authority post reporting directly to VCNS at NHQ. Its units and establishments are mainly scattered across the province of Balochistan, and has an approximate area of 700 miles. Its headquarters is at PNS Akram in Gwadar.

Military exercises are conducted by the Pakistan Armed Forces to increase combat readiness, and to identify problems in logistics, training, and current military doctrine. They also test the ability of units to work together. Lastly, they act as a visible expression of military might, which acts as a deterrent to potential enemy action. An important component of each exercise is the after-action assessment. Since 1989 the four branches services have increasingly begun coordinated exercises.

PNS <i>Nasr</i>

PNS Nasr (A47) is a Type 905 replenishment oiler of the Pakistan Navy. The oiler was constructed in the People's Republic of China by the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company and entered service in 1987.

PNS Shamsheer (FFG-252) is the second F-22P Zulfiquar-class guided missile frigate currently in active service with the Pakistan Navy since her commissioning in 2009.

<i>Tughril</i>-class frigate Class of multi-role warships for the Pakistan Navy

The Tughril-class frigates, formally classified as the Type 054A/P frigates, are a series of modified guided-missile frigates built by Hudong–Zhonghua Shipbuilding (HDZH), for the Pakistan Navy. The Type 054A/P is a modified derivative of the Type 054A frigate and was specifically customised to meet the operational requirements of the Pakistan Navy; the class features several capabilities - including anti-surface warfare (ASuW), anti-aircraft warfare (AAW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and low radar observability. The frigates form the mainstay of the Pakistan Navy's active naval fleet. The class also supplants the obsolete Tariq-class destroyers.
