The Pakistan Navy Station Mehran (reporting name: PNS Mehran), is a naval air station that is the headquarters of the Pakistan Navy's air arm located in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.

Established in 1975, the naval base shares its jurisdiction with the PAF Base Faisal of the Pakistan Air Force and the Faisal Cantonment of the Pakistan Army. In addition, the PNS Mehran is also the distinguished itself as the "Naval Aviation Training School (NATS)" that provides education and training to navy's personnel to be qualified as naval aviators.

History

On 13 September 1975, the senior fleet commander released commissioning orders of the PNS Mehran with the project delegated to Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers and the Military Engineering Services (MES) build the base and its support facilities. [1] Constructed on an accelerated schedule, the command post of the PNS Mehran was completed on the 25 September 1975 which allowed the commissioning of the PNS Mehran on 26 September 1975. [1] The Pakistan Naval Air Arm is roughly modeled on the British Fleet Air Arm with British Sea King from the Royal Navy joining the service with the Pakistan Navy. [1]

The PNS Mehran saw its first commanding officer, Captain Fazl Rab (PN No. 456) in 1975, and was the first naval air station in the country. [1]

Since 1990, the PNS Mehran scope has been expanded and was the first aviation base that had attained the night operational aerial capabilities. [1] The PNS Mehran was also the site of the targeted terrorist incident when it was attacked by the TTP, which the navy suffered collateral loss of its expensive assets. [2] The attack was widely seen as a repercussion of U.S. Navy's operation that killed killed Osama bin Laden. [3] [4] [5] [6] [5]

The PNS Mehran is a headquarters of the Pakistan Navy's Air Arm whereas the Commander Naval Aviation (COMNAV) also commands and report the unit from the PNS Mehran. [1]

The Naval Aviation Training School (NATS) is located in the premises of the PNS Mehran that provides education, training, qualifications, and certifications to the navy's personnel to be passed out as "naval aviators." [1] The School is commanded by the Officer Commanding Naval Aviation Training School (OC NATS). [1]

The school is mandated to train surface fleet officers and the enlisted personnel to meet the various requirements of shipborne flight operations, specifically the rotary-wing aircraft. [1] The School also conducts joint training with the Pakistan Air Force to provide certification to its personnel to earned their pins after completing and passing out from the Air Navigators Course. [1]

While India suffered no losses, Pakistan lost a minesweeper, a destroyer, a cargo vessel carrying ammunition, and fuel storage tanks in Karachi. Another destroyer was also badly damaged and eventually scrapped. India celebrates its Navy Day annually on 4 December to mark this operation. Trident was followed up by Operation Python three days later.

Operation Dwarka, codenamed as Operation Somnath, was a naval operation by the Pakistan Navy to attack the Indian coastal town of Dwarka on 7 and 8 September 1965. This instance was the first engagement by the Pakistan Navy in any of the Indo-Pakistan Wars.

Operation Python, a follow-up to Operation Trident, was the code name of a naval attack launched on West Pakistan's port city of Karachi by the Indian Navy during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. After the first attack during Operation Trident on the Port of Karachi, Pakistan stepped up aerial surveillance of its coast as the presence of large Indian Navy ships gave the impression that another attack was being planned. Pakistani warships attempted to outsmart the Indian Navy by mingling with merchant shipping. To counter these moves, Operation Python was launched on the night of 8/9 December 1971. A strike group consisting of one missile boat and two frigates attacked the group of ships off the coast of Karachi. While India suffered no losses, Pakistani fleet tanker PNS Dacca was damaged beyond repair, and the Kemari Oil Storage facility was lost. Two other foreign ships stationed in Karachi were also sunk during the attack.

The PNS Mehran attack was an attack/shooting by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Al Qaeda which took place on 22 May 2011, at PNS Mehran, the headquarters of the Pakistan Navy's Naval Air Arm and the most populous Pakistani military installation, located near the PAF's Faisal Air Force Base of Karachi, Sindh.

The Pakistan Army has six military bases, that are noted as Cantts, while the Karachi Port serves as the main naval base for the Pakistan Navy and Qasim Fort as the headquarter for the Pakistan Marines.
