The BYD e5 is a compact all-electric car manufactured by BYD, based on the gasoline-powered BYD Surui sedan, an internal combustion engine (ICE) car that had been introduced in 2012. [3]
The e5 featured a 65Ah lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO4), capable of delivering an all-electric range of 220 km (137 mi), and a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph). A 300-km-range version called BYD e5 300, which shares many characteristics with the BYD Qin EV300, was launched in 2016. [8]
Government incentives for electric vehicles has led to the BYD e5 being exported to several Latin American countries for use as taxis, including Santiago, in Chile. [9] In Guayaquil, the capital city of Ecuador, it is currently the most popular model of electric vehicle used for taxis, but a lack of charging infrastructure has been a barrier to wider adoption. It is part of the Ocean product line and marketed through "Ocean Network"-branded dealerships and stores. The car was made available in Brazil and some other South American markets in 2024 as the BYD Dolphin Mini.
The BYD Seal 07 DM-i, previously the BYD Seal DM-i until 2024, is a plug-in hybrid full-size sedan manufactured by BYD Auto since 2023. It was introduced in a prototype form at Auto Shanghai as the BYD Destroyer 07, and was renamed to integrate it with the Seal series of sedans. Sold through Ocean Network dealerships, the Seal DM-i is positioned in the BYD's range as a cheaper alternative to the similar BYD Han, which belongs to Dynasty Network dealerships. It went on sale in September 2023 in China.
