The 2016 Summer Olympics women's basketball tournament in Rio de Janeiro, began on 6 August and ended on 20 August 2016. [1]
The United States won their eighth total and sixth consecutive gold medal by defeating Spain 101–72 in the final. [2] [3] [4] Serbia captured their first bronze medal after beating France 70–63. [5]
The medals were presented by Patrick Baumann of Switzerland, Sir Philip Craven of Great Britain, Angela Ruggiero of the United States of America, and members of the International Olympic Committee, while the gifts were presented by Horacio Muratore, Lena Wallin Kantzy, José Luis Sáez, and the President and Central Board Members of FIBA.

The draw was held at the FIBA Headquarters, also known as the "House of Basketball" in Mies, Switzerland on 11 March 2016. As the five winners of the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women (OQT) were yet to be known, they were assigned placeholders as "OQT 1", "OQT 2", "OQT 3", "OQT 4" and "OQT 5". These were the pot assignments:

The United States won the gold medal in both events, with the women's team's victory marking their first-ever gold medal. Due to the boycott, the Soviet Union and Hungary withdrew from the tournament. The former, having already qualified for both events was replaced by West Germany in the men's competition, while both nations' women's teams were replaced by Australia and South Korea.

The tournament was awarded to Czech Republic after winning the bid to Serbia. The tournament also serves as a qualification for the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain, with the top five nations qualifying. As hosts Spain finished in the top five, the sixth placed team also qualified.

It was held from 13 to 19 June 2016. France hosted the tournament in the city of Nantes.

It was originally scheduled to take place between 2 and 19 September 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics to 2021, it was postponed to September 2022.

The 2019 European Women Basketball Championship, commonly called EuroBasket Women 2019, was the 37th edition of the continental tournament in women's basketball, sanctioned by the FIBA Europe. The tournament was co-held in Latvia and Serbia from 27 June to 7 July 2019.
