Be Someone is a reoccurring piece of graffiti above Interstate 45 in Houston, Texas. It has become a well known landmark in Houston due to its prominent location to commuters. [1]

History

The piece's date of origin is unverifiable. It is situated on a Union Pacific bridge which crosses above Interstate 45 as it enters the city of Houston. [2] It has been vandalized and repainted several times. [3] [4] In 2018, it was changed to "Be Mattress Mac." [5] In 2019, it was altered to say "Be Sus." [6] During the COVID-19 pandemic, the words "Wash your hands" were painted over the slogan. [7] [8] [9] In June 2020, the name "George Floyd" was painted over it. [10] In February 2022, it was painted over with “No War Know Peace” in response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. [11]

On May 29, 2021, the BeSomeone Instagram account posted that they would no longer restore the graffiti after it had been defaced. [12] [13]

Cultural impact

The slogan had become common on local merchandise. Rapper Paul Wall has a tattoo in reference to the work. There have been multiple attempts to make the graffiti a protected landmark. [14]

Six Flags AstroWorld, also known simply as AstroWorld, was a seasonally operated amusement park in Houston, Texas. Owned and operated by Six Flags, the park was situated between Kirby Drive and Fannin Street, directly south of I-610. The park opened on June 1, 1968, and was developed originally and constructed as part of the Astrodomain, the brainchild of local philanthropist and former Houston mayor Roy Hofheinz, who intended it to complement the Astrodome. The Hofheinz family sold AstroWorld to Six Flags in 1978.

Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. Active since the 1990s, his satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls and bridges throughout the world. Banksy's work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the musical group Massive Attack.

Surrender Dorothy Film special effect

"Surrender Dorothy" is a famous special effect used in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, where the Wicked Witch of the West flies on her broomstick to write the two-word phrase across the sky. The phrase later attained local fame as a graffito in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.

Tavar Zawacki American abstract artist

Tavar Zawacki formerly known as 'ABOVE' is an American abstract artist living and working between Lisbon, Portugal, and Bali, Indonesia. For twenty years (1996–2016) Tavar Zawacki created and signed all of his artworks with his street artist pseudonym, 'ABOVE'. Tavar was born and raised in California until the age of 19, at which time, Zawacki bought a one-way flight from California to Paris, France, bringing with him a backpack full of art supplies, all the money in his bank account (US$1,500), and a 'rise above your fears' approach to starting his art career. Starting in Paris in 2000, Tavar transitioned from painting traditional letter style graffiti of A-B-O-V-E, to his 'Above arrow' icon that represented his optimistic mentality to 'rise above fears, challenges, and anything holding you back from your goals.' During a 20-year period, the artworks of ABOVE could be seen in over 100 cities spanning 50 countries around the world.

Borf

Borf was a graffiti campaign seen in and around Washington, D.C. during 2004 and 2005, carried out by John Tsombikos while studying at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. This four letter word was ubiquitous around the Northwest quadrant of Washington, and ranged from simple tagging to complete sentences to two-color stencils to the massive defacement on an overhead exit sign from the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge to Constitution Avenue. Tsombikos was arrested on July 13, 2005 after tips led police to his latest tag.

Graffiti in Russia

In Russia, graffiti is an ambiguous phenomenon, i.e. considered to be desecration by some, and art by others. It is done for a variety of reasons, including expressing oneself through an art form, or protesting against a corporation or ideology.

An outdoor 1992 bronze sculpture of Christopher Columbus by Joe Incrapera was installed in Houston's Bell Park, in the U.S. state of Texas. It was later removed in 2020 after a history of vandalism.

Aveva Stadium

Aveva Stadium is a rugby union stadium in Houston, Texas, United States as part of Houston Sports Park and is the home of the Houston SaberCats of Major League Rugby. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 24, 2018. Naming rights for the stadium were purchased by British information technology company Aveva, and was opened on April 13, 2019. Aveva Stadium is the first stadium in the league built specifically for use by Major League Rugby, and the second rugby-specific stadium primarily for professional competition in the United States.

Virtuoso is a 36-foot-tall, 21-ton outdoor concrete sculptural group by David Adickes. It was installed in 1983 on the outskirts of the Theater District in downtown Houston next to the Lyric Centre building. It was commissioned as a work that "paid homage to music, dance and performing arts".

Black Lives Matter art in Portland, Oregon Public art in Portland, Oregon related to the Black Lives Matter movement

Many artworks related to the Black Lives Matter movement were created in Portland, Oregon, United States, during local protests over the murder of George Floyd and other Black Americans. Oregon Arts Watch contextualized the artistic works, stating that a "whitewashed pre-COVID lens" on American life, which obscured systemic racism, had been "cracked", and describing artists' response to racial violence being brought into the public eye was a "marathon, not a sprint".

I Love You Will U Marry Me was a message added as graffiti to a high concrete bridge at the Park Hill housing estate in Sheffield in April 2001, after the estate was listed at Grade II in 1998 and before renovations began in 2006. The slogan was removed due to maintenance work in 2021.
