Braswell is a city in Polk and Paulding counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 355.
Braswell is located at 33°59′2″N84°57′34″W / 33.98389°N 84.95944°W (33.983787, -84.959479). [4]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.1 square miles (8.0 km2), of which 3.1 square miles (8.0 km2) is land and 0.33% is water.
Braswell had its start in 1882 when Southern Railway predecessor East Tennessee Virginia & Georgia Railroad was extended to that point. The ETV&G became part of Southern Railway when Southern Railway was incorporated in 1894. [5] Braswell was named for Henry S. Braswell (1832-1902), a prominent citizen of Paulding County who owned a large amount of land in the area. Henry Braswell, in partnership with William McCracken, was in the land and timber business supplying crossties and bridge timbers to Southern Railway and Seaboard Air Line Railroad.
Braswell was the location of the only tunnel on Southern Railway's (now Norfolk Southern Railway) Chattanooga to Atlanta main line. The original tunnel was bypassed in 1979 by cutting through Braswell mountain slightly to the east. Another nearby tunnel, the Brushy Mountain tunnel at Divide on the former route of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, is currently used by bicyclists and joggers as a part of the Georgia/Alabama Silver Comet Trail. The portion of the trail in Alabama is the Chief Ladiga Trail, and the portion in Georgia is the Silver Comet Trail. The Silver Comet Trail was named for one of the Seaboard Air Line passenger trains, the Silver Comet, that traveled the route. [6]

Rockmart is a town in Polk County, Georgia, United States. Its population was 4,732 at the 2020 census. It developed as a railroad depot town when the Southern Railway built a station in the area. The community was incorporated in 1872, and was named from abundant deposits of slate in the area. The Rockmart Downtown Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Silver Comet Trail is a rail trail in west-northwestern Georgia, United States.
The Seaboard Air Line Railroad, which styled itself as "The Route of Courteous Service", was an American railroad which existed from April 14, 1900, until July 1, 1967, when it merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, its longtime rival, to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Predecessor railroads dated from the 1830s and reorganized extensively to rebuild after the American Civil War. The company was headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, until 1958, when its main offices were relocated to Richmond, Virginia. The Seaboard Air Line Railway Building in Norfolk's historic Freemason District still stands and has been converted into apartments.
The Chief Ladiga Trail is a rail trail in Alabama that stretches for 33 miles (53 km) from Anniston to the Alabama-Georgia state line. It is the state's first rail trail project.
The Georgia Railroad and Banking Company also seen as "GARR", was a historic railroad and banking company that operated in the U.S. state of Georgia. In 1967 it reported 833 million revenue-ton-miles of freight and 3 million passenger-miles; at the end of the year it operated 331 miles (533 km) of road and 510 miles (820 km) of track.
The Atlanta and Birmingham Air Line Railway (A&BAL) was formed when the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL) purchased the capital stock of the bankrupt East and West Railroad of Alabama (E&W) on April 23, 1902. The E&W Railroad had already established a line from Cartersville, Georgia, to Pell City, Alabama, through the cities of Rockmart, Georgia, Cedartown, Georgia, and Piedmont, Alabama.

The Silver Comet was a streamlined passenger train inaugurated on May 18, 1947, by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Before its inaugural run, the new train was christened by actress Jean Parker at Pennsylvania Station in New York City. The train succeeded the SAL's Cotton States Special, which took the same route and which like the Silver Comet left the northeast at midday and arrived at Birmingham in the late morning.
The Georgia, Florida and Alabama Railroad, known as the Sumatra Leaf Route, and colloquially as the Gopher, Frog & Alligator was a 180 miles (290 km)-long railroad from Richland, Georgia to Carrabelle, Florida. It was founded in 1895 as a logging railroad, the Georgia Pine Railway.
The Seaboard Air Line Railroad’s Main Line was the backbone of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad's network in the southeastern United States. The main line ran from Richmond, Virginia to Tampa, Florida, a distance of over 800 miles. Along its route it passed through Petersburg, Raleigh, Columbia, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Ocala, Florida. While some segments of the line have been abandoned as of 2022, most of the line is still in service and is owned by the Seaboard Air Line's successor, CSX Transportation as their S Line.
The Wilmington, Charlotte and Rutherford Railroad, originally the Wilmington and Charlotte Railroad, was a railway company in the United States. It was incorporated in 1855 and reorganized as the Carolina Central Railway in 1873. It built 152 miles (245 km) of track, in two unconnected sections, in the southern part of North Carolina. The company was again reorganized as the Carolina Central Railroad in 1880. In 1900, the Carolina Central Railroad was merged into the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Its lines are now owned by CSX Transportation.
