The Brick Store, at 21 Lisbon Road in Bath, New Hampshire, claims to be the oldest continuously operating general store in the United States. [2]
The initial construction date of this brick two-story structure is uncertain, and was claimed to be 1804 by a 1937 reference work. Its predominantly Federal styling supports a date in this timeframe. It is known through other documentation to have been standing in 1814, and was damaged by fire in 1824. Repairs at that time probably included the addition of Greek Revival elements to the building's exterior. Although numerous Federal-style brick buildings were built in Bath, this is the only commercial one to survive. [3]
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. [1]
Located on the Ammonoosuc River, the store is one of the most well-known landmarks of northern New Hampshire. [4] Not only does it sell groceries, gas, and beer, at one time it was a place where customers could drop off UPS packages and dry-cleaning, and pick up mail. [4] It is famous for its buttermilk donuts, smoked meats, fudge, and fudge-covered meats. [4] The store is especially well known for its smoked cheese and smoked pepperoni. [5] The store is a regular stop on the presidential campaign trail; [4] candidate Barack Obama visited the store on May 28, 2007, with his daughters. [6]
Due to a combination of a poor economy generally, and the loss of local customers to major chain stores, the store suffered financially in the early 2000s. [4] The closing of the Bath Covered Bridge for 20 months in 2012-2014 further hurt business. [4] The store was sold at auction in July 2016 for $235,000. [6] The new owners renovated the store with an eye to historic appropriateness, [5] and it was re-opened in July 2017. [7]
Bath is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,077 at the 2020 census, unchanged from the 2010 census. Now a tourist destination and commuter town for Littleton, the town is noted for its historic architecture, including the Brick Store and three covered bridges. Bath includes the village of Swiftwater and part of the district known as Mountain Lakes.

At 98 years it was the oldest deli in the city.
The Main Street Historic District in Tampico, Illinois, United States is a historic district notable as home to the birthplace of Ronald Reagan. The district includes the late 19th century collection of buildings that comprise Tampico's central business district, among them are two apartments that the Reagan family occupied in the early 1900s. The buildings in the district went through several periods of rebuilding during the 1870s due to major fires and a tornado. The district boundaries encompass the 100 block of Main Street and exclude properties that do not date from the historic period.
Boxwood Hall State Historic Site, located at 1073 East Jersey Street in Elizabeth, New Jersey, is a historic house museum operated by the state of New Jersey. Boxwood Hall was built about 1750, and is a National Historic Landmark for its association with Elias Boudinot (1740-1821), who lived here from 1772 to 1795. Boudinot, a lawyer, politician, and diplomat, was president of the Continental Congress 1782-83.
The New Hampshire Bank Building is a historic commercial building at 22-26 Market Square, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Built in 1803 and much altered since, it is one of the nation's oldest purpose-built bank buildings, and was until 1977 the oldest building used continuously to house banking operations. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
The Bath Covered Bridge is a historic covered bridge over the Ammonoosuc River off US 302 and NH 10 in Bath, New Hampshire. Built in 1832, it is one of the state's oldest surviving covered bridges. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and underwent a major rehabilitation in the 2010s.
The Commandant's Quarters at the Dearborn Arsenal is a United States military structure located at 21950 Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, Michigan. Built in 1834, it is the oldest building in Dearborn still located on its original site. It is considered to be one of the seven most significant buildings in Michigan. It was designated as a Michigan State Historic Site in 1956 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
The Simmons - Wright Company is a historic general store established in 1884 in Kewanee, Mississippi, a small town just outside Meridian in Lauderdale County. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The Goodall-Woods Law Office is an historic former office building on United States Route 302 in Bath, New Hampshire. The modest two-story brick building, now a private residence, was built in 1816 by Ira Goodall, and is an unusual local example of Federal architecture. It is particularly distinctive for its two-story rounded bay, which projects from the front. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
The Jeremiah Hutchins Tavern is a historic former tavern on United States Route 302 in northwestern Bath, New Hampshire. Built by 1799 by one of the town's early settlers, the building is one of the town's finest surviving examples of transitional Georgian-Federal architecture. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
The Sawyer–Medlicott House is a historic house at the junction of Bradford and River roads in Piermont, New Hampshire. Built about 1820, it is a good example of Federal period architecture, and the only brick house of that style in the small town. It was built for Joseph Sawyer, a real estate speculator and politician. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
The Birchwood Inn is a historic tavern and inn on New Hampshire Route 45 in the center of Temple, New Hampshire. With a construction history dating to the early 19th century, it is an architecturally important example of how traveler accommodations changed in rural New Hampshire in the 19th century. The inn has been identified as "The Birchwood" since 1892, and was the town's only public accommodation for most of the 19th century. The building, still in use as a restaurant and inn, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. In 1981 the inn and surrounding area were used in the filming of the movie Summer, based on an Edith Wharton novel.
Freese's Tavern is a historic tavern and general store at 1011 Whittier Highway, the northwest corner of the junction of New Hampshire Routes 109 and 25 in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. With a building history dating to about 1780, and a continuous history of operation as a tavern, general store, post office, library, and town hall, it is one of the oldest establishments of its type in the United States. It is presently known as The Old Country Store, and includes museum displays on its history. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
The Lower Corner Historic District encompasses a small village center in the town of Sandwich, New Hampshire. Lower Corner is a rural village that is strung along New Hampshire Route 109 on either side of its junction with School House Road, about one mile from the main village of Center Sandwich. The village was developed relatively early in Sandwich's history, although its oldest buildings now date to the early 19th century. There are 25 contributing structures, mostly residences. There are two buildings built as stores, including one of brick; all the other buildings are wood frame. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
The Swift & Co. meatpacking plant in Sioux City, in the state of Iowa in the Midwestern United States, was built in 1918–19 as a speculative venture under the name Midland Packing Plant. After going into receivership, it was acquired by Swift & Co. in 1924, and continued to operate until 1974. It was then purchased by a Sioux City businessman and converted to an enclosed mall, the KD Stockyards Station. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
