Brooker is a town in Bradford County, Florida, United States. It is part of the North Florida region. The population was 322 at the 2020 census.
In 1838, the community was initially called "Ward City", which was named after an early settler, E. P. Ward. [1] In 1892, Thomas R. Collins petitioned for a US Post Office, and became postmaster in 1894. Between April 17, 1893, and August 23, 1894, the post office was briefly renamed "Vandy", before ultimately being renamed yet again as "Brooker" on August 24, 1894. [2] [3] [4]
Collins renamed the post office after the old Brooker Bridge located across the Santa Fe River, and that bridge was named after Ed Brooker, an early farmer from the community. The postmaster decided to change the name of the area because a majority of the citizens preferred the name "Brooker" over the original community's name, "Ward City". [1] [2] [3] Although being around since 1838, the "Town of Brooker" wasn't officially incorporated as a municipality until 1952. [5]
