Species of Calephelis feed on Asteraceae , Ranunculaceae , Euphorbiaceae and Bromeliaceae . Recorded larval host plants are in the genera Packera , Parthenium , Mikania , Cirsium , Baccharis , Clematis , Encelia , Eupatorium , Ageratina , Bebbia , Acalypha , Bromelia , Chromolaena , Calea , Fleischmannia and Verbesina . The generic name is derived from the Greek words κιθάρα (kithara), meaning "lyre", and ξύλον (xylon), meaning "wood," referring to the use of the wood in the sounding boards of string instruments.
