Caym: Book of Angels Volume 17 is an album by Cyro Baptista's band Banquet of the Spirits performing compositions from John Zorn's second Masada book, "The Book of Angels". [1] [2]
Warren Allen from All About Jazz stated "This union of Zorn's compositions and Baptista's joyously tight band and world aesthetic makes for one of the most wonderfully exciting and eclectic releases in the series... Amidst the panoply of world grooves, the listener finds mystical chants, astral bells and swirling keys... The album is, in some part, jazz. But it's also everything else—from traditional Moroccan music to Balinese gamelan playing—along with the heavy Brazilian, Middle Eastern and even electronica influences". [3] Tom Volk noted that "Caym is 50 minutes of swirling exotica, navigated by four excellent players who all have their moments in the baked desert sun of which the music is so evocative". [4]

John Zorn is an American composer, arranger, record producer, saxophonist, and multi-instrumentalist. He has composed, performed, and produced music across genres that include, but are not limited to, jazz, rock, hardcore, classical, surf, metal, soundtrack, ambient, and improvised music. Zorn incorporates diverse styles and compositional methods in his works, which he identifies as avant-garde or experimental. In 2013, Down Beat described Zorn as "one of our most important composers".

Cyro Baptista is a Brazilian percussionist in jazz and world music. He creates many of the percussion instruments he plays.
Bar Kokhba Sextet brings together six core members of the Masada family under the leadership of John Zorn. The music act is an improvisational group from New York's best downtown artists, including Cyro Baptista on percussion, Marc Ribot on guitar, Greg Cohen on bass, Joey Baron on drums and Mark Feldman / Erik Friedlander on strings. Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz is an American bassist and oud player who has recorded and performed extensively with Cyro Baptista's Banquet of the Spirits, Daniel Zamir's Satlah, Rashanim, and Pharaoh's Daughter, and John Zorn. Blumenkranz studied at the Manhattan School of Music, the Rimon School of Music in Israel, and holds a B.A. in Performance from Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2012 he released the first album under his leadership Abraxas: Book of Angels Volume 19 featuring compositions by John Zorn.
Banquet of the Spirits is an album by percussionist Cyro Baptista which featured the debut of the band that would become known as Banquet of the Spirits - Baptista, bassist Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, keyboard player Brian Marsella, and drummer Tim Keiper - which was released on the Tzadik label in 2008.
