Coin of the Year Award

Last updated

The Coin of the Year Award (COTY) is an awards program founded and annually conducted by the American publisher Krause Publications of Iola, Wisconsin, and directed at the coin producing industry. [1] [2] Awards are given for numismatic design, artistic vision and craftsmanship. A panel of international judges chooses the coins from those issued two years prior to the year of the award. [3]

Contents

About

The COTY was awarded for the first time in 1984, in which coins issued in 1982 were assessed. [4] A panel of judges chooses ten coins to be nominees for each of ten categories. [5] These nominees will then be reviewed by an international panel of judges who are numismatic experts, journalist, authors, coin designers, and mint, bank and museum officials. [6] Category winners are selected in the first round of voting and Coin of the Year in the second round, chosen from the category winners. [7]

Categories

Awards are currently given in ten categories. When the awards were first started, there were six categories. Five categories have since been added and one was dropped.

1 yen coin Smallest denomination of the Japanese yen currency

The 1-yen coin is the smallest denomination of the Japanese yen currency. Historically they were initially made of both silver and gold in the early 1870s. Issues facing the Japanese government at the time included wanting to adopt the gold standard, and competing against the Mexican dollar for use in foreign trade. The decision was made to use silver one yen coins exclusively outside of Japan for trade, while gold coins were minted and used in mainland Japan. Gold and silver coins were eventually allowed to co-circulate in mainland Japan from 1878 to 1897 when they were demonetized. Millions of former one yen silver coins were countermarked by the Japanese government for use outside of the mainland. Silver one yen coins continued to be minted until 1914 for backing up currency.
