The enzyme cyclohexyl-isocyanide hydratase (EC 4.2.1.103) catalyzes the chemical reaction

N-cyclohexylformamide cyclohexyl isocyanide + H2O

This enzyme belongs to the family of lyases, specifically the hydro-lyases, which cleave carbon-oxygen bonds. The systematic name of this enzyme class is N-cyclohexylformamide hydro-lyase (cyclohexyl-isocyanide-forming). Other names in common use include isonitrile hydratase, and N-cyclohexylformamide hydro-lyase. This enzyme participates in caprolactam degradation.

An isocyanide is an organic compound with the functional group –N+≡C. It is the isomer of the related nitrile (–C≡N), hence the prefix is isocyano. The organic fragment is connected to the isocyanide group through the nitrogen atom, not via the carbon. They are used as building blocks for the synthesis of other compounds.
