The first election to the new Derry and Strabane District Council took place on 22 May 2014, [1] as part of the Northern Ireland local elections that year. [2] [3]
Reform of local government in Northern Ireland saw the replacement of the twenty-six districts created in 1973 with a smaller number of "super districts". The review process began in 2002, with proposals for either seven or eleven districts made before it was suspended in 2010. On 12 March 2012, the Northern Ireland Executive published its programme for government, which included a commitment to reduce the number of councils in Northern Ireland to 11. The first elections to these new councils were on 22 May 2014.
Derry City and Strabane District Council is the local authority for Derry and Strabane district in Northern Ireland. It was created as part of the 2014 Northern Ireland local government reform, replacing Derry City Council and Strabane District Council. The first elections to the authority were on 22 May 2014 and it acted as a shadow authority to its two predecessors until the new district formally came into being on 1 April 2015. The name was changed from Derry and Strabane City Council on 24 February 2016.

Current composition: see Derry and Strabane District Council.
West Tyrone is a county constituency in Northern Ireland, represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post voting system.
Mid Ulster is a parliamentary constituency in the British House of Commons.
Derry City Council was the local government authority for the city of Derry in Northern Ireland. It merged with Strabane District Council in April 2015 under local government reorganisation to become Derry and Strabane District Council.
Coleraine Borough Council was a local council mainly in County Londonderry and partly in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. It merged with Ballymoney Borough Council, Limavady Borough Council and Moyle District Council in May 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Causeway Coast and Glens District Council
Strabane District Council was a local council in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland established by the Local Government Act 1972. It merged with Derry City Council on 1 April 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Derry and Strabane District Council.
The names of the city and county of Derry or Londonderry in Northern Ireland are the subject of a naming dispute between Irish nationalists and unionists. Generally, although not always, nationalists favour using the name Derry, and unionists Londonderry. Legally, the city and county are called "Londonderry", while the local government district containing the city is called "Derry and Strabane". The naming debate became particularly politicised at the outset of the Troubles, with the mention of either name acting as a shibboleth used to associate the speaker with one of Northern Ireland's two main communities. The district of Derry and Strabane was created in 2015, subsuming a district created in 1973 with the name "Londonderry", which changed to "Derry" in 1984.
Elections to Belfast City Council were held on 22 May 2014 – on the same day as other local government elections in Northern Ireland – as part of the process of local government reform provided for in the Local Government Act 2014.
The 2014 Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in Northern Ireland. This was on the same day as other local elections.
The 2014 Causeway Coast and Glens District Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Causeway Coast and Glens District Council in Northern Ireland. This was on the same day as other local elections.
The 2014 Fermanagh and Omagh District Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in Northern Ireland. This was on the same day as other local elections.
The 2014 Lisburn and Castlereagh District Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of the new Lisburn and Castlereagh District Council in Northern Ireland. This was on the same day as other local elections.
The 2014 Mid and East Antrim District Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Mid and East Antrim District Council in Northern Ireland. This was on the same day as other local elections.
The 2014 Newry, Mourne and Down District Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in Northern Ireland. This was on the same day as other local elections.
Gary Donnelly is an Irish republican politician, former Real Irish Republican Army prisoner, and as of May 24, 2014, an elected member of Derry and Strabane District Council.
Alderman Maurice Devenney is a British politician formerly of the Democratic Unionist Party who previously represented Foyle in the Northern Ireland Assembly. He took office on 20 October 2014 after succeeding retiring party member William Hay. He resigned in April 2015 to concentrate on his council work.
The 2017 election to the Northern Ireland Assembly was held on 2 March 2017. The election was held to elect members (MLAs) following the resignation of deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness in protest over the Renewable Heat Incentive scandal. McGuinness' position was not filled, and thus by law his resignation triggered an election. It was the sixth election since the Assembly was re-established in 1998, and the first to implement a reduction in size to 90 MLAs.
Gary Middleton is a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician in Northern Ireland. He has been a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for Foyle since April 2015, when he was co-opted to replace Maurice Devenney.
Local elections are scheduled to be held in Northern Ireland on Thursday 2 May 2019 – the same day as local elections taking place in England – contesting 462 seats in all. Local elections were last held in 2014.
