El Ali (Somali : Degmada Ceel Cali) is a district in the central Hiran region of Somalia. El Ali has a population of around 120,000 inhabitants. The broader El Ali District has a total population of 543,345 residents. El Ali means (Ali's well). El-Ali's residents largely belong to the Galje'el (or Gaaljecel) sub-clan of Dirisame.

History

The El Ali meteorite was identified by Kureym Mining and Rocks Company's staff in 2020 and trucked towards Mogadishu. [1] Prior to that, the rock had been celebrated for between five and seven generations, featuring in songs, folklore, dances, and poems. [1] In 2022, the mineral elaliite was named after El Ali after being identified in the meteorite by scientists at the University of Alberta. [2]

Location

It is situated 75 km south west of Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiiraan region.

Demographics

El Ali is predominantly inhabited by people from the Somali ethnic group, with the Dirisame sub-clan of the main Gaaljecel clan especially well represented.

Members of the clan reside in 6 out of the total 18 regions of Somalia but are primarily found in the central region of Somalia - Galgaduud region which they hold a monopoly over and is considered their heartlands. They are considered the most powerful sub-clan in central and southern Somalia controlling important sections of the country and greatly influencing the nation's capital Mogadishu, holding the 1st mayorship position in the post-independence era. The Ayr are regarded as being very large in numbers because they are spread throughout numerous regions in Somalia and are significant to the country's political, economic, social, and military sectors.

Babille is a woreda in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Fafan Zone, Babille is bordered on the west by the Oromia Region, on the north by Gursum, and on the east and south by Fiq Zone.

Dolobay is one of the woredas in the Somali Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Afder Zone, Dolobay is bordered on the south by the Provisional Administrative Line with Somalia, on the west by the Ganale Dorya River which separates it from the Liben Zone, on the northwest by Cherti, on the north by Afder, and on the east by Bare. The major town in Dolobay is Weldiya.

Elaliite is a mineral with formula Fe9PO12 (or Fe2+8Fe3+(PO4)O8) that was first synthesized in a laboratory in the 1980s and later identified in natural material in 2022 at which time the official mineral designation was given. The mineral is orthorhombic, with space group Cmmm (space group 65).

The El Ali meteorite (Arabic) or Ceel Cali (Somali), literally meaning, "Ali's Well," is a 15,150-kilogram (16.70-short-ton) meteorite that was known to the local population in Somalia for generations, but officially recognized as a meteorite only in 2020.
