Elkton is an unincorporated community in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. [1] It lies along Ohio State Route 154 at the confluence of Elk Run and the Little Beaver Creek and has the ZIP code 44415. It is home to the Federal Correctional Institution, Elkton, a male low-security federal prison. [2] Additionally, Elkton is home to one of the shortest covered bridges in the United States, the Church Hill Road Covered Bridge.
Elkton was platted in 1835. [3] The community derives its name from nearby Elk Run creek. [4] A post office called Elkton has been in operation since 1838. [5] The community thrived due to its location on the Sandy and Beaver Canal, but was in decline by the late 1840s when the canal became unprofitable and was suspended. [6]

The river flows through Cecil County, Maryland, with its watershed extending into New Castle County, Delaware and Chester County, Pennsylvania. Elkton, the county seat of Cecil County, is located at its head. Its total watershed area is 143 square miles (370 km2), with 21 square miles (54 km2) of open water, so its watershed is 15% open water. It is south and east of the North East River, and north of the Sassafras River.

Gaston's Mill-Lock No. 36, Sandy and Beaver Canal District, is a historic district listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The district is located within Beaver Creek State Park, approximately 1 mile south of Clarkson, Ohio. Gaston's Mill was constructed in 1837 and was powered by Little Beaver Creek. Lock 36 was one of 90 locks on the Sandy and Beaver Canal. Construction of this canal began in 1834 but was not completed until 1848.
The Church Hill Road Covered Bridge is a covered bridge in Columbiana County, Ohio. It was originally located over Middle Fork Little Beaver Creek in Elk Township. The bridge was constructed in 1870 and was relocated in 1982 behind a now closed restaurant on Ohio State Route 154 in Elkton, Ohio.
