Energiekontor is a German company specialized in the development and management of wind farms and solar parks. The main activities are concentrated in Germany, Portugal and in the United Kingdom. The company sells developed facilities or takes the ownership. Energiekontor manages external wind farms for clients as well.

Achievements and market presence

Until May 2018, Energiekontor had built 118 wind farms with a total rated power of nearly 940  MW. [2] The electricity generated by this facilities amounts to ca. 2 billion  kWh per year which comes up to the demand of more than 600,000 households. [1] The capital invested totals more than €1.6 billion. [2]

Energiekontor itself owns and operates 34 wind farms and one solar park with a total rated power of nearly 259 MW in Germany, Portugal and in the UK (end of 2017). In addition to its headquarters in Bremen, the company has five offices in West, North and East Germany. Branch offices were established in Leeds (England), Glasgow (Scotland), Lisbon (Portugal), Nijmegen (Netherlands), Austin/Texas (US) and Toulouse (France). [2]

Innovation

Energiekontor also develops new technologies and methods to improve efficiency and reliability of wind power facilities. Particular importance has been the Rotor Blade Extension (RBE), presented in 2009 together with the University of Bremerhaven. [3] By increasing the rotor diameter with an additional modular segment that is applied over the blade tip, yield grows significantly. The extension modules for two AN Bonus turbines (1.0 and 1.3 MW) are specified with an Annual Energy Production (AEP) increase of 5 to 7%. Energiekontor indicates a payback period of three years and recommends the solution as an alternative to repowering especially in countries with limited grid access. [4] [5] In December 2016, the company announced a new prototype for GE 1.5sl turbines (1.5 MW) with an expected AEP increase of around 9.5%. [6]

History

Energiekontor was founded in 1990 by Bodo Wilkens and Günter Lammers on the basis of the German Electricity Feed-in Act, a precursor of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). The first two wind farms, located in Lower Saxony, were built in 1994. [7] In 2000, Energiekontor had a track record of around 200 MW and went public. [8] In 2005, the first wind farm in UK was taken into operation. [9]

Beginning in the late 1990s, Energiekontor also developed two offshore wind farms in the German North Sea. Borkum Riffgrund West was approved in 2004, Nordergründe in 2007. The rights for these projects were sold between 2011 and 2014 to DONG Energy and wpd  [ de ]. [10] [11] Thereby, the company carried out its pull back from all offshore activities.

In 2010, Energiekontor started to develop solar parks with photovoltaic panels. In 2016, the company entered the Dutch market. In 2017, further market entries followed in France and in the US. [1]

Wind power generation capacity in India has significantly increased in recent years. As of 31 March 2023, the total installed wind power capacity was 42.633 gigawatts (GW), the fourth largest installed wind power capacity in the world. Wind power capacity is mainly spread across the southern, western, and northwestern states.

Wind power in Ohio has a long history, and as of 2016, Ohio had 545 megawatts (MW) of utility-scale wind power installations installed, responsible for 1.1% of in-state electricity generated. Over 1000 MW more were under construction or pending approval. Some installations have become tourist attractions. There has been a sudden increase in generating capacity, as total wind power capacity in the state was just 9.7 MW in 2010. By 2019, there were 738 MW of capacity, which generated 1.71% of Ohio's electricity.

Burton Wold Wind Farm is a wind farm located near Burton Latimer in the English county of Northamptonshire, UK. The farm was developed by Your Energy Ltd, is owned by Mistral Windfarms and operated by Engineering Renewables Ltd. E.ON UK is buying the electricity output of the project under a long-term power purchase agreement. The farm is spread over three hectares. It has an installed capacity of 20 MW and generate on average around 40,000,000 units of electricity annually.

A wind turbine is a device that converts the kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy. As of 2020, hundreds of thousands of large turbines, in installations known as wind farms, were generating over 650 gigawatts of power, with 60 GW added each year. Wind turbines are an increasingly important source of intermittent renewable energy, and are used in many countries to lower energy costs and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. BARD Offshore 1 is a 400 megawatt (MW) North Sea offshore wind farm with 80 BARD 5.0 turbines. Since the owner could not buy such 5MW offshore wind turbines in sufficient numbers in 2006, Dr. Bekker set up its own production of turbines. This should serve as the legacy for his children. The systems were developed by aerodyn Energiesysteme GmbH. A plant for rotor blades and nacelle assembly was built in Emden and a plant for the offshore foundations in Cuxhaven. Two turbine prototypes were set up at the Rysumer Nacken in 2007, and another prototype in Hooksiel in 2008. Construction was finished in July 2013 and the wind farm was officially inaugurated in August 2013. The wind farm is located 100 kilometres (60 mi) northwest of the isle Borkum in 40-metre (130 ft) deep water.

Alpha Ventus Offshore Wind Park is Germany's first offshore wind farm. It is situated in the North Sea 45 kilometres (28 mi) north of the island of Borkum.

GE Offshore Wind is a joint venture with Alstom and a subsidiary of GE Renewable Energy, created in 2015 when most of Alstom's electrical power and generation assets were acquired by General Electric. GE's stake in the joint venture is 50% plus 1 share.

Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm is an offshore wind farm 32 km north of Cromer off the coast of Norfolk, in the North Sea, England. It is owned by Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited (DOW), a subsidiary of Equinor, Masdar and Statkraft. The site is a relatively flat area of seabed between the Cromer Knoll and Inner Cromer Knoll sandbanks and is one of the furthest offshore sites around the UK.

Adwen GmbH is an offshore wind service company headquartered in Bremerhaven, Germany. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Spanish-German company Siemens Gamesa. Previously the company designed, assembled, and installed 5-Megawatt wind turbines for offshore wind farms. It also designed and manufactured rotor blades through its subsidiary Adwen Blades GmbH, headquartered in Stade, Germany.
