2023–24 FIBA West Asia Super League |
The FIBAWest Asia Super League (WASL) is an international basketball league organised by FIBA Asia, consisting of clubs from West Asia and Gulf regions, in addition to the representatives of South and Central Asia. The league was announced in 2022 and started with the inaugural season from December, until June 2023.
The league exists out of 18 teams, divided in its sub-zones. The champions and runners-up of each season is scheduled to qualify for the Basketball Champions League Asia.
On March 31, 2022 FIBA announced the creation of the West Asia Super League. The United Arab Emirates-based company eVulpa was appointed as partner for its commercial rights. [1]
The inaugural season has begun on 19 December 2022, and will end in May 2023, with a total of eighteen teams playing in the 2022–23 season. [2] Kuwait SC were the inaugural champions of the Gulf League, [3] while Al Riyadi Beirut won the inaugural West Asia League title. [4] The first-ever Final Eight was hosted in Dubai, and on 17 June 2023, Manama from Bahrain won the inaugural championship. [5]
The WASL has three champions each season: the winner of the Gulf League, of the West Asia League and the overall winner who comes out of the final stage victorious.

The champions of the Sub-Zone Leagues (Gulf League and West Asia League) are determined by play-off series. In the finals, the two teams play in a best-of-three series.

Starting from the 2023–24 season, FIBA announced an annual most valuable player. The inaugural award was given to Thon Maker of Al Riyadi. [14]
Al Riyadi Club Beirut, commonly known simply as Al Riyadi, is a multi-sports club team based in Manara, a district in Beirut, Lebanon. Founded in 1934, the multi-sports club, which is mainly known for their basketball program, also plays ping-pong, martial arts, and other sports.
Salah Mejri is a Tunisian former professional basketball player who represented the senior Tunisian national basketball team internationally. Standing at 7 ft 2 in (2.18 m), he played at the center position. After a successful career in Europe, Mejri was the first Tunisian NBA player when he joined the Dallas Mavericks in 2015 as a 29-year-old rookie. He stayed in the NBA for four seasons before returning with the Real Madrid in the 2019 offseason.
Jalaa Sporting Club, also known as Jeunesse Sportivo Alep (Shabibeh), is a Syrian basketball club based in the city of Aleppo. They compete in the Syrian Basketball League, and have qualified for the Asian Champions Cup on four occasions, with its best finish in 2006 and 2007, where they finished second on both occasions.
Kuwait Sporting Club, shortly known as Kuwait SC or Kuwait Club, is a Kuwaiti professional basketball club. The club competes in the Kuwaiti Division I Basketball League, which it has won fourteen times. Kuwait SC has won the Arab Club Basketball Championship once, in 2022 and is the first team from Kuwait to win an Arab title. The club has traditionally provided Kuwait's national basketball team with key players.

Ismail Ahmed Abdelmoneim, also known as Somaa, is an Egyptian-Lebanese professional basketball player for Al Riyadi Club Beirut of the Lebanese Basketball League. He was a main member of the Egypt national basketball team that participated in the FIBA Africa Championship 2001 in Casablanca in Morocco and in the FIBA Africa Championship 2003 that took place in Alexandria, Egypt. He is nicknamed "The Egyptian Pharaoh".
The 2017 FIBA Asia Champions Cup was the 26th staging of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup, the international basketball club tournament of FIBA Asia. The tournament took place in Chenzhou, China from 22 September to 30 September 2017. This was the second straight year that China hosted the tournament.
Shabab Al Ahli Club is an Emirati professional basketball team located in Dubai. The team has competed in the UAE National Basketball League, as well as the West Asia Super League (WASL).
The 2018–19, UAE Pro League was the 45th edition with Al Ain being the defending champions after winning their 13th title. Both Baniyas and Kalba returned to the pro league after getting relegated back at 2017. After losing Al Shabab and Dubai last season the league has been reduced to 12 teams. Both the teams needed to get back to 14 teams so they held a relegation play off between bottom two teams of last year and the 3rd and 4th placed teams of the 2nd division. Sharjah set a record of the longest unbeaten run in a UAE Pro League season for 23 games before losing to Al Wasl 3–2. In 2019, Sharjah won their first title since 1996 after beating Al Wahda 3–2, this was the first time a team outside of Dubai and Abu Dhabi won the league since the 1996. On 26 May, Emirates and Dibba Al Fujairah were relegated after a fixed match between Shabab Al Ahli and Fujairah favored Fujairah and got them out of relegation. The Emirates demanded that the UAEFA investigate on the match between Shabab Al Ahli and Fujairah, questioning the legitimacy of the two penalties that was rewarded to Fujairah and the two goals that was disallowed for Shabab Al Ahli. However the UAE court later rejected their complaint and the team got relegated
